Fab Friday style tip: it’s time for a mid-year style audit

Happy new financial year (BTW if you’re in the finance sector, did you have a big one last night? Is it like New Year’s Eve for you … filled with expectations of good times and a drunken pash?).

As of today, we’re officially in the second half of 2011 and one of my readers – thanks Dianne – left me a timely comment on this post.

So six months on … How are you going with your fashion/trend goals for the year? Thanks to your help early this year mine are on track.

I wrote that post on the last day of 2010, putting my style aims for the year out in cyberspace, at the same time encouraging you to think about your own.  And it turns out my end-of-semester report card is actually looking quite good, thank-you very much.  Not even a “tweets too much” comment to be seen (only because my husband wasn’t writing it!).

I really have only bought clothes and accessories that have earned a right to a slice of my wardrobe real estate.  They are all clothes and accessories that work in with my lifestyle and they make me feel good when I wear them. Oh, and that autumn-winter fashion wishlist I created back in February?  I pretty well filled it.  Bought the very skirt pictured and variations of the other pieces.

Apart from a few key purchases, I’ve actually enjoyed looking in the vault to find pieces I haven’t worn for a year … “shopping” more often from what I already own.  In my dreams my wardrobe looks something like this …

It does not.

So it’s time for me to climb down from the lofty heights of my mid-year style report card.  I haven’t been all good.  All day. Every day.

I confess, I’ve taken every opportunity presented to me to embrace my inner dag.  School holidays started in Queensland this week and the onset of a two-week break from routine is like waving a white surrender flag in front of my dark-circled, heavily concealed eyes.  Pyjamas may have stayed on till lunch time, only to be exchanged post-shower for a pair of jeans and my trusty Converse sneakers.  Makeup may have been minimal non-existent.  Hair may have been pulled back into a loose pony tail.

I'm embracing a more "relaxed" wardrobe these school holidays

When the holidays are over it will all be about the spring fashion season ahead.  Crazy, I know.  But that’s the fashion game for you. And that’s why it’s even more important to keep working on a style that you can call your own … whether that’s killer heels and frocks or sneakers and jeans.  It’s all about you, your personality and your lifestyle.  It’s about you feeling the best you possibly can. Every. Day.

So how’s your mid-year style report card looking?  Have you made any changes to your wardrobe in 2011?  Have you nailed your style?  Or is it a fun work in progress?

  1. You inspired me to buy the same Country Road maxi skirt from your wishlist. Sadly, I’ve only been able to wear it for home ‘leisure-wear’ as the lower part is so narrow it makes me walk like a geisha from Kyoto! Can you walk comfortably in yours??

  2. I really want that peach ballet skirt.

I love how my style has evolved – I am wearing some maxi skirts and vintage this season. I especially love how I can put together inexpensive outfits that look great.

  3. Nikki I have just decluttered my wardrobe today and spent some time figuring out what outfit pieces I can mix and match. I honestly wished I could call you up to get some pointers which was why I said it on FB. I like the idea of a style report card. Mine would be pretty poor recently, but I am working on it. I’m making a concerted effort this month to invest some time in looking after myself better. I’ll keep you posted!

  4. timely post for me Nikki. I was thinking about this last week – now I just have to put it into ACTION! Monday I’m pulling all my clothes out of my wardrobe – and making three piles – throw, charity, keep… Will be interesting to see what I come up with.

  5. I really need to start “investing” in some quality pieces, with the kids I’m always just wearing the same clothes, the ones I know will wash out the stains from food, puke or the other “p” word! I hardly ever get to go out nowadays but it would be so nice to have some nice dresses or tops to wear with my jeans! I think I need to lose the rest of that baby weight but for now at least find nice clothes that suit my style and shape!
Loving school holidays though! Dominic is on holidays for three weeks now and pj’s and coffee have been my great morning friend!
    Enjoy your school holidays!!

  6. I think I’ve been really good this year. I’ve finally confirmed my body shape and have now started to embrace clothes I never thought I could actually wear. And all at bargain prices too! I’ve given away a heap of stuff I know I would never wear again – because they just don’t fit me and are just not my style or personality. And have to say am pretty proud of myself for being diligent at not clicking the check-out button all the time! 🙂

  7. I can’t shop my wardrobe because it permanently looks like the Boxing Day sales are on in the store… The rest of my home / life is so organised it bores me, but my clothes situation is a pit. Must sort that out.

Thanks for the love, Nikki. You’re a gem. Make sure you add a couple of extra comments to the post so you get all the entries you’re entitled to! x

  8. I have just had a baby, and 8 weeks down the line, I feel the need to clear out the wardrobe and get some new items. The aim is to get some new clothes that make me feel good about myself and make the most of my new figure! I need to hide a tum, emhance a waist and make the most of a pair of Double D’s! ;o) Help! x

Congrats Wendy! And yes, you need some piece that work for you and make you feel great when sleep may not be on your size. An excellent maternity bra for those puppies would be a good start!

  9. I am about to move house and I’ve promised myself I will get rid of all the clothes that make me look frumpy. I really want a wardrobe like the one above with only a few select pieces. The only difference is instead of a Chanel picture I’d replace it with a Chanel bag!!!

Moving is THE best time to take stock, Bianca … And frumpy is something you should never feel. Have a closer look at the wall in that wardrobe … she’s actually framed the shopping bags … So there would be a real bag somewhere!
