Your 2011 style mantra … repeat after me

Nikki Parkinson Life 32 Comments

I do love ruling a line under things (yes, that’s my anal/OCD personality nicely creeping in there).  So, on this last day of 2010, I thought I’d share with you my style mantra for the year ahead.  Feel free to add in yours in the comments below.  Together we’ll cut a super stylish swathe through 2011.  I just know we can.

Mad Men's Joan Holloway (played by Christina Hendricks) ... just a little 2011 style obsession for me

The Styling You 2011 Style Mantra

I will “shop” more often from my own wardrobe.  Even cheaper than eBay.

I will only buy a new garment if I really LOVE it.  After thinking about it overnight first.

I will only buy something new if I can pay for it with cash, not plastic.

I will flirt around the edges of current trends but nurture my long-standing commitment to classic pieces.

I will give up the possibility that gladiator sandals will look even remotely flattering on me and hope like hell they disappear off the fashion radar soon.  Ditto cut-off shorts and high-waisted pants.

I will exfoliate away any spray tan that has passed its used by date and is looking like a dodgy skin condition … instead of just covering it with long pants.

I will be more forgiving on myself and the shape genetics has handed me, working with it, not against, to dress comfortably, yet with enough structure to look dressed up.  This is possibly why I have embraced Mad Men with such gusto.

I will attempt to learn how to create a “smokey eye” makeup look that doesn’t just look like I’ve done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.

I will find a new lip colour that makes a statement other than beige/nude/soft pink or a slick of gloss applied at the traffic lights.

I will invest my fashion budget on a statement necklace … or three. If I’m not investing in statement necklaces, I will channel said budget into statement earrings … or cocktail rings. Or shoes, or bags.  Get my drift?

I will honour my inner dag and give myself days off from “creating a look”.  In my job this may involve locking all the doors and not even stepping outside for the postie, but hey, it’s the price I’m willing to pay for the sake of dagdom.

Happy New Year Styling You readers.  May 2011 bring with it greater confidence in anything you set your heart and mind to.

  2. Exactly, I would rather save my money than just spend on the things that I don’t normally wear. I would rather keep it simple but classy and fashionable and stylish at the same time. that’s what I will do to make life easy. and also is that I’m going to clean up my wardrobe and getting rid of the things that I don’t wear anymore 🙂

I think that this stuff works for me, thanks

Thanks so much. The first two are most important. No use busting your budget on clothes that you don’t even like wearing. Better to have less – and really feel fantastic every time you step out the door.

  4. Love your blog! And love your mantra. And days off from ‘creating a look’ don’t have to be daggy – I’m a pe teacher and I have a lot of pretty spunky looking gym gear…waaaaay more fun than high heels 🙂

Thanks and thanks for stopping by – have just gone over to your blog too. Love! And I see I’ll be meeting you at AusBlogCon in March!
And by the way, I do love hanging out in my exercise gear – people never know if you’ve been to training or are on your way to training … or just put it on so they think either!

  5. Would the lights where you are applying lip gloss be near that porn shop by any chance!! he he

I too love Christina Hendricks – isn’t she amazing!?!

Thanks so much for linking up to bigwords, can’t wait to meet you in March

  6. I love your style mantra! Very balanced. Mine? Bit of dag, a bit of classic, a bit of used, a bit of new, a bit of trend, a bit vintage — a bit of everything.

  7. Great mantra – I am all for learning the smokey eye! In 2011 I want to ‘create a look’ as you put it. I’ve never really dressed up, not ever owned any high heels and I think it’s time I did a little something for me.
    Happy New Year 🙂

  9. Happy New Year!

I have had a moment of clarity this week with all the sales and decided no, from now on I am not buying things just because they are going cheap.

I love that, Paula. It took me a long time to get to that point but I feel so much better now, knowing everything I buy is because it works for me and my wardrobe – not JUST because it was on sale. Happy New Year!

  10. Happy New Year, Gorgeous! Hope 2011 is even more fabulous for you than this year xx
LOVE Mad Men fashion… have been buying ‘June’ style dresses lately. Since I have a cello shape, I find fitted dresses look better on me.

I learnt how to do the smokey eye look via Benefit website and in the Benefit smokey eye pack!

Im sticking with the classic, stylish look and not getting hooked into the latest fad.
