17 summer beauty tips for 2015

The heat is definitely on.

Now that I’ve got you not giving a toss about putting on a swimsuit and splashing around at the beach or in a pool this summer, it’s time to talk summer beauty tips.

My 17 spring beauty tips were all about possibly changing things up for the season ahead.

My 17 summer beauty tips are all about survival.

There I go again being all dramatic but from where I currently sit in a pit of perspiration because I challenge myself just how long I can go without putting the air con on.

The record this week has been 10 minutes from logging on my computer to switching on, so I do not know why I’m persisting this this ridiculous self-loathing challenge.

Anyhoo, the beauty tips.

I’ve broken them down into five categories. So that’s five key things to remember.

The key to surviving the season is to keep things in the beauty department simple.

17 summer beauty tips

Sunscreen

1. My number one beauty tip is always wear sunscreen but I want to underline that tip with a big, bold virtual Sharpie during the summer months. The Australia summer sun is not forgiving in any way, shape or form. It’s deadly at its worst; it’s ageing at its least. Keep out of it during the middle of the day; stay shaded and slap on sunscreen. Your skin will thank you years down the track.

2. Find a sunscreen you’re happy to apply every day. I find the lighter formulations are ideal for this. They still have the SPF you need but don’t feel icky and sticky. These are the ones I’m more likely to splurge on but I still find some supermarket products that work just as well.

Recommended: MooGoo Natural Sunscreen SPF40; Ultraceuticals Mineral Defence Face & Body Lotion SPF50+ ; NIVEA Light Feel Everyday Sun Lotion SPF30+; Cetaphil Suntivity Liposonal Lotion Body & Face SPF50+

3. Find a sunscreen that your budget allows you to buy in bulk. I’m talking pump pack near the pool or multiple spray applicators for the beach bag. You don’t want to skimp on application. You need about a shot-glass-full of sunscreen to cover your face and body each time. And you need to re-apply when coming out of the water.

Recommended: NIVEA Sun Ultra Beach Quick Dry Sunscreen Spray SPF50+; Cancer Council Everyday SPF30+ 1l; Sunsense Ultra Lotion 30+

4. You can’t put sunscreen on your eyes so protect them with a pair of sunglasses. I have a sunglasses wardrobe (it’s a protection/fashion thing) but you don’t need to spend a lot of money to protect your eyes. All sunglasses sold in Australia must be tested and labelled according to the Australian/New Zealand standard AS/NZS 1067:2003. Look for a lens category of at least 2.

Faux tan

5. Embrace the faux tan if you prefer a tanned look.  I’m averaging about every 10 days between tans at the moment, booking the tans around events and photoshoots. They make me feel more confident in summer styles and swimwear. More tips for spray tan success here.

6. Treat your salon faux tans with care.  In the two-hour basting period, it’s essential that you wear only light clothing and hide out in air con. Sweating is not your faux-tan friend in this two hours – much like getting caught in the rain, it will only serve to make the tan wash off and not take in those areas where the sweat runs free.

7. Moisturise your faux tan morning and night. This will not only extend its longevity but also mean that fading will happen without patchiness.

8. Skip the salon and opt for a gradual tanning formula. If you’re skilled and up for it (I’m not), by all means go the full-strength home tanning variety. I stick to gradual tanning products because you cannot stuff them up. I always switch to a gradual tanning moisturiser about day 3 of my salon spray tan to prolong it.

9. Need colour in a hurry? Opt for an instant tan formula. These are genius and can give just the right amount of colour you need. They won’t come off until you shower.

Recommendations: Trilogy Instant Bronzing Gel, The Base Instant Tan Mousse; Jbronze Instant Tanning Cream

Protect your hair

10. The summer sun, salt and chlorine water is not your hair’s friend. Next week on the blog I’ll be sharing my next Summer Hair Care Boot Camp post with more tips but in a nutshell, if you get your hair coloured then that’s a pretty big investment. Look after that investment by minimising summer exposure to the elements.

Simplify your makeup

11. Events and work may still call for a full face of makeup. In these cases aim to apply in a cool, non-humid environment. This gives your makeup its best possible start.

12. Wear a primer. Primers act like velcro between your skin and foundation. There are primers specific to skin type if you’re in need of one for an oily skin.

Recommended: Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Facial Primer and Brightener – Oily Skin; Face of Australia High Definition Primer; Maybelline Dream Smooth Face Primer

13. Wear a long-stay foundation. These combined with a primer ensure minimal slide (and touch-ups) during the day.

Recommended: Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Perfectly Satin 24 HR makeup SPF15; L’Oreal Paris Infallible 24 Stay Fresh Foundation

14. On non-event or work days, keep your makeup to a minimum. For many this means not applying a thing and that’s ok. Me? I like a little evening out of the complexion with a CC or BB cream, a highlighter on the cheeks, a slick of mascara and a lip gloss on the lips. Quick and super easy but makes me feel fresh for the start of the day.

Recommended: Garnier BB Cream Anti-Aging Light; Giorgio Armani Luminessence CC Cream

Keep hydrated

15. Too much water will not be enough. Your skin, lips, hair needs this even more in the summer months – not to mention the post-seasonal-Champagne hydration. Keep a water bottle or jug and glass on hand at all times.

16. Spritz your face throughout the day. This not only enhances your skin’s moisture levels but helps you keep fresh and cool.

Recommended: Jane Iredale D20 Hydration Facial Spritz; Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist

17. Have an after-sun product on hand should your best sun-safe intentions let you down.

Recommended: MooGoo Soothing MSM Cream, Thursday Plantation Aloe Vera Gel

So tell me, have you got a hot summer beauty tip to share? What helps keep you feeling and looking cool when the heat is on?

  1. I shudder when I think of all of the times I was burnt in my youth! Great tips! We are headed to winter for a month, which is probably a good thing for my skin but I love Summer!

  2. Totally agree with simplifying your make up regime – thick makeup doesn’t do well in summer, especially when it’s melting down your face! I love Garnier Miracle Cream because it is the perfect sheer amount of coverage for day time. And the Garnier BB is all I need for a nighttime look. No pancake makeup this season! x

  3. Off to check out that Cetaphil sunscreen. Still hunting for one that doesn’t bring my face out in blotches! Thanks for all the great tips, Nikki. xx

  4. I’m a big fan of the tubular mascara NIkki- clinique does two beautiful options. The mascara ONLY comes off with warm water- in funny little tube thingies that incase the eyelash. So it is swim proof, sweat proof and even cry proof…A very good summer option.

  5. It’s going to be a stinker today. No air-con in my room at work, but we do have a pretty good cross current air flow. I hate the humidity, so I am up 4.30 these days to get things done at home while it’s cool. Plus I love hearing all the birds, yep I’m a weirdo! Just sunscreen, CC, lip balm and a bit of bronzer for me for work. And a massive hat for outside and sunnies. I do wear a lot of sunscreen too. I love the good old Le Tan Coconut Lotion for work, it’s cheap enough to slather on, and while it does have the fake coconut scent I’m okay with that. The kids at work always tell me I smell like coconut 🙂

    1. You are not a weirdo – you’re smart. It’s ridiculous how hot it is so early. Loved the rain this morning at our place – then it turned to steam. Cannot go wrong with Le Tan Coconut Lotion – also comes in a pump pack!
