Having access backstage before a fashion show is like an access all-areas insight into the months of work that goes into the 15 minutes that you might see if you’re sitting in the audience … or watching at home via social media.
And it is a SHOW in all senses of the word.
The level of theatrics may vary but the overall production essentials don’t.
It starts with the designer, that designer’s aesthetic as well as his or her’s theme for the collection they are presenting. It continues with the makeup, hair and nail director, the show’s stylist and sound and lighting technicians.
All pieces of this theatre of fashion have to come together to produce a memorable finished result.
That happened last night at the Michael Lo Sordo show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia 2013*.
I watched it all unfold backstage in the hours leading up to it.
Maybelline NY’s makeup director Nigel Stanislaus had me very afraid curious about the teal triangles that were being brushed on to the side at the corner of each of the models’ eyes using Maybelline NY Color Tattoo in Tenacious Teal and Too Cool.
“Don’t worry, you’ll understand why they are there when you see the show, ” he assured me.
Then I looked down and noticed the model’s nails.
The Essie combination of Chinchilly (what I’m currently wearing) as a base with a blue – Bikini So Teeny – applied across the top half makes for a stunning contrast and another hint of what was to come.
Front of house as the models walked the runway, it all made sense. So much sense.
The collection was all about effortless styling (which is never effortless but just looks like it), great detail (hence the detail right down to the eye makeup and nails) and a subtle drama that comes with minimalist pieces designed with some structure but a lot of wearability.
The blue featured in the nails and makeup was also a feature colour in this spring-summer collection. A fresh highlight to an otherwise neutral offering.

Well it certainly is an easy look to recreate,I don’t think I could do without Mascara ,The model looks great though and I think it would be very interesting indeed being where you are right now Nikki,seeing how the looks come together to make a whole production.
