Are you dreaming of staying cool, stylish and on budget?

Remember when I got all excited over discovering the Emerson fashion range at Big W? And the time when I was pretty much frothing at the mouth over the MIX apparel range launched at Coles?

The reason for my giddiness was about fashion equality. I realise that not everyone has $100, $200 $300 or more to drop on one garment so to be able to put together a whole top-to-toe summer casual look for under $50 is gold. Solid style gold.

Here are some of the very cute Emerson pieces I’m loving right now.

Emerson Candi Ballet Flats and Parrot ankle strap flats $14.98. Sizes 6-11

$7?! Can you believe it. I’ll have every colour, thanks.

I’d love hear if you’ve picked up some great clothes from Big W’s Emerson range? Have you been impressed? How have they washed up?

  1. Omigosh! me too! I love Emerson! I have emerson skinny leg jeans that i got for just $9! I cant believe it 🙂 Its such a great brand. I have also got a number of tops there that are reasonably priced that are good to go under tailored jackets, great for the office!

  2. I have many Emerson items in my wardrobe – mainly tops and t-shirts and one great summer dress that always gets commented on. I have found that their sizing is quite generous though – I am generally a 12/14 in most labels but Emerson I wear a 10. Love the prices and am actually wearing an Emerson t-shirt now (white with black bird cages). Need to get over there today and try on some shoes I think!

  4. I am the proud wearer of an Emerson sun dress purchased in Big W for the bargain price of $29. I’ve already worn it 3 times making cost per wear under $10 and it’s only the first day of summer. Must dash back and get some matching shoes!

  5. I popped down to my local Big W today to check out some Christmas presents and remembered your post, so I went to check them out. They looked pretty good and yes, the prices are GREAT! I also finally, got to have a look at Peter Morrisey’s Big W line and fell in love with a few of the navy and white dresses!! But wished the prices were more like the Emerson range. Although, comparing some of the pieces, I would say Mix Apparel at Coles has a slightly better quality. I’ve still yet to check out the range of Emerson shoes – that’ll be one of the things to do this Friday!

  6. I have a pair of the candi flats in the teal and I LOVE THEM! Since it is my new fave colour I wear them quite a bit. I have brought quite a few pairs of shoes from Big W lately for casual wear. I will have to check out the clothing though. I tend to only take a running look and get pulled to the toy department like every other Mum I know!

  7. I bought a black dress. It’s great, I love it and the price tag. I’m loving these cheaper items, I’d much rather buy a couple of pieces than blow all my money on one piece, given I can’t shop every month.

  8. Yes, the prices are good, but aren’t you worried about the trade conditions these are made under, for that price? They’re just screwing the small manufacturer down to nothing. Sorry to rain on your parade.

That’s a good point, Stephanie … buying ethically Australian made (and there’s a difference there too as there are sweat shops in Australia) is the ultimate but not always everyone’s budget. I wish I could afford to stock my entire wardrobe with clothes that fit this criteria. http://www.ethicalclothingaustralia.org.au/home/home

What’s more of an inequity is that some more expensive brands sold in chain stores here in Australia are made in the same factories as these but just charge more to the customer.

  9. Will be heading off to get a few of those sandals. Love an easy, cheap sandal that will give me a season or two out of them. Ive bought a few things from the Emerson range. Striped naby, white and orange tee which has washed up well. But my favourite is the pair of denim shorts. Washing well, wearing well and sit on me really comfortable. Love them. Going back to buy some more.

  10. I’m pretty fussy about wearing comfy shoes and find that the cheap ranges often feel like you’re walking on concrete – but found that a pair of $6 innersoles from the supermarket GREATLY amps up the comfort factor. Might almost double the cost of the sheos but they’re still ridiculously cheap!!

  11. I can’t buy a lot of budget ranges 🙁 The sizes always seem a bit bigger than other stores, I swim in the size 8’s (smallest they usually go to) and can use the shoes as kayaks (smallest they go to is a 6) boooooooooo! They all look so lovely!

  12. I absolutely LURVE Big W!! All my Christmas’s came at once when one opened up near where I live just recently! I buy most of my daughter’s clothes there and started noticing the change in fashion there a few months ago. I have quite a few clothes from there now for myself. I always get comments when I wear a coral top with a ruffle from Emerson and no one can believe I paid $10 for it! It’s washed really well. And I definitely plan to get more summer stuff from there soon!

  14. I have so much of Emerson it’s ridiculous…been waiting a long time for Aussie discount stores & supermarkets to get in on the decent quality clothing act like the UK and US…

…love the cut and quality of Emerson & Mix….my wardrobe never looked so good, for a smidgen of a budget!

still team it with good shoes & nice bag though 🙂

I am going there today for another look, it’s addictive, that’s the only problem, I guess they know that 😉

  15. I bought the Emerson light grey flared pants & I love them. Only $34. I left them longer to wear with heels. A number of people have commented that they think they look great & I could get away with pretending they were more ‘exclusive’ than they are. I think the trick is to do the ‘high/low’ thing. Don’t wear it top to toe & throw one thing obviously more upmarket into the mix. Also choose fabrics with some body to them so they don’t wash into a rag and designs that are easy to iron so they don’t scream cheap. Unfortunately there are expensive brands out there that fail here – Nike & Country Road I am looking at you. I bought a pair of Emerson canvas ballet flats that are very cute, but awfully hot on the feet. OK in the cooler weather & air conditioning but not pleasant while out & about in this muggy heat. They are very flat which may not suit everyone. I think it is great that there are some budget conscious brands that don’t assume we want to look like 18 year olds going clubbing or to the beach.

    1. It’s so about picking the garments that look more expensive, no matter what store you’re in. This applies to accessories too. You can go into somewhere like Diva and buy something that is obviously the price your paid and also buy something that people would have to guess.

  16. have sandals similar to those – am living in them already. Have two dresses (a first for me) and everytime I wear them people comment on them. I bought a black t-shirt which post purchase I realise have the ridiculously unflattering (on me) cap sleeve but has a lovely neckline. Mysteriously three small holes have appeared in that one which is disappointing. But the range is so much better than anything Big W has every offered before in women’s fashion. OH and I picked up a pair of Mambo sandals AND a pair of red emerson high heels (I KNOW!) with a polka-dot innersole – so cute and vaguely comfy (for high heels)! All of this has cost me LESS than $200. For someone with basically no disposable income this is remarkable AND has made me feel so much better about myself.
