The IT bag of summer 2017 will have many embracing its sense of nostalgia, especially those of us whose teenage wardrobes featured this style.
Basically, if a bag is woven from cane, raffia, straw, bamboo, crocheted or macramed, it is so trend for summer that you will find yourself starting a collection which features shapes and styles for every outfit.
There are so many of these types of bags in store right now. Below we’ve found 20 available online but walk into almost every fashion chain store or lifestyle/boutique store and you’ll find a bag to suit.
For me, they’re a relaxed way to mix up your bag-robe for summer weekends and holidays. They may not work for the office, although the Country Road bag in black (#3) could for a work-to-drinks situation, but they bring an effortless summer vibe to a casual outfit.
If you wanted to narrow down your summer bag-robe to two styles, I’d go for a clutch or cross-body and a tote/market/basket style.
The larger bags offer practicality for the everyday stowage for life’s essentials. The smaller bags scream cute and are the perfect icing to your summer smart casual outfits.
Tassels, pom poms and trims add interest; as does a combo of raffia/cane and leather. As for shapes, I’m a sucker for the “roundie”. It’s an absolute head-turner.
What to wear with your woven bag? Think ’70s-inspired boho maxis and tunics or flowy tops and denim shorts. Wedges, platforms or slides also make great outfit partners.

I know its not 2017, but woven bags are coming back into style! Especially like #4,#5 and #10, I own a couple and they go well with every outfit, and make your look just feel more summery
I had exactly the same bag as number 1, back in around 1980-81. So did my mother and sister. Back then it was $20
I had one too! – so-o on trend!
Great tips Nikki – I’m on the lookout for a new bag as we speak 🙂
Takes me back to my childhood and beach days!! Feather and Noise also have a fantastic range of these types of bags atm too.
ooooooh, number 6 has got me a little excited! I may have to invest 🙂

So many memories!
Hi Nikki, I had the first bag when I was a teenager in the 70s, and I thought I was the ants pants! I saw Jasmine Hunt with hers on IG and was gobsmacked, I wish I had kept mine now my granddaughter would have loved it. I probably bought it from Sportsgirl in Queen Street, how I used to love going in there. I bought a cute little raffia clutch, and a market basket with fringing, tassels and crochet in Bali last year. I love all of these bags, so summery! x
