Stuck in a winter style rut? These winter outfit formulas will help

Nikki ParkinsonFashion 2 Comments

We’re in the depths of winter – yes, even in Queensland – and the motivation to get out of my activewear or out of bed and create an outfit is waining. If you’re feeling the same way, these five winter outfit formulas will help.

They’re not anything new or groundbreaking, just tried and true winter outfit formulas that work for me whether it’s for a work meeting, heading out with girlfriends or just relaxing on the weekend. Use each formula, take the examples shown and look in your own wardrobe to find pieces to create a similar look.

If you are up for topping up your winter wardrobe, where possible I’ve included links to shop what I’ve shared. If an item isn’t linked, it’s no longer available.

Winter Outfit Formula #1: loungewear

I work from home – a very icy home in winter – loungewear or loungewear-adjacent wardrobe pieces are my staples. I feel comfy and cosy and know that I need to leave the house and look in some way presentable, I can just add on an outer layer, a trench, coat or a shacket – something that’s roomy enough to sit over the loungewear but structured enough to provide a contrasting style juxtaposition to what’s underneath.

Winter Outfit Formula #2: jeans + tee + coat/jacket

My love of denim runs very deep (you can check out the various styles of jeans I’m wearing this winter HERE). In a world where dressing has become completely casualised, having a pair or pairs of jeans that suit you is a fast track way to extend your winter wardrobe. The easiest way to dress up a basic tee and denim outfit is to add on a coat/blazer/jacket and let that outerwear piece do the talking in your outfit. The outerwear adds interest by playing with proportions in your outfit but it’s also a way to play and contrast colour and texture.

Winter Outfit Formula #3: tonal dressing

If I want to give the illusion of having got my sh*&t together, I’ll embrace this outfit formula. Even if it’s just for lounging around at home. It’s such an easy one for you to try as well – simply head into your wardrobe and look at separates you might have in the same colour family. It doesn’t have to be neutrals. Your favourite colours will be sitting there front and centre. Play with different combinations of those separates to create looks you may not have previously tried. Consider contrasting different textures for extra interest. With your shoe and accessories choices, either keep going with the tonal dressing or contrast like I do below with the all navy outfit.

cardi | pants, bag and belt | boots

Winter Outfit Formula #4: the knit maxi dress

Sure, I could wear jeans or dress pants for a winter night out but the appeal and comfort of “one and done” knit dress usually wins out. It’s the perfect style of dress to work back with boots, tights and thermals if needed. And then adding a jacket or coat will ensure you feel warm and cosy heading to and from your dinner or friends’ catch up. I’m not tall at 166cm but if you’re shorter and concerned a maxi dress would be overwhelming on you, look for a style with a split or buttons that can be undone to show more of your leg. This helps to balance out proportions. Boot style tip: wear with knee high boots or ankle boots that rise higher than the hem line length. This keeps the flow of the look elongated.

Winter Outfit Formula #5: knit + maxi skirt

The bias cut maxi skirt instantly elevated your outfit because it’s inherently a dressy piece. How you make it go the distance for the every day is working it back with a luxe knit. Not only does this allow you to play with proportions between the two pieces, the contrast of the textures in both pieces adds interest. If you’ve always tucked a knit or a top into this style of skirt, do try wearing it out for a more modern take on this look. Yes, you could sub in a midi skirt here but pay attention to wear it falls on your leg. If it’s hitting mid calf and you’re wanting to wear boots, maybe sub ankle boots for knee-high boots so the line of the outfit isn’t broken.
