Hello! And welcome back to regular programming around these parts for 2019. If you’re new to Styling You, then please make yourself at home. Most Mondays throughout each fashion season, I’ll feature a Model and Me blog post here.
Fun fact: I started these posts by accident back in 2010 after being asked to model for a boutique’s fashion parade. Not being of model proportions, I thought maybe it would help to see me in the same outfit as what you see the model wearing when she wears your favourite labels.
Turns out you do like being able to see that … because 90% of us are not same, height or size that models are and it’s so damn tricky to imagine a garment on us when all we see are models who do not look anything like us.
In the eight-plus years since I’ve been publishing Model and Me posts, I’ve watched from the sidelines as more independent labels choose to photograph and feature women not of traditional model proportions or age for their online stores and campaigns.
This makes my heart sing … and something I’m taking one step further with the launch of Styling You The Label next month (more below).
To kick off the Model and Me 2019 series, I’m stoked to feature a piece from the new Bohemian Traders Daydreamer collection. I’ve supported this label since it launched and love the fun and wearability it brings to my wardrobe.
The model
Bohemian Traders Genoa dress in buff polka
and me
Bohemian Traders Genoa dress in buff polka (I’m in size M) | Bohemian Traders shorts (I’m in size 30) | Adorne bag | FRANKiE4 Footwear SHELLY slides in gold
I have this design in the black (you can see how I’ve worn it with jeans HERE – swipe to see it without the jeans). I’m 166cm tall, sized down to M and it’s pretty short on me, like beach short. But that’s my legs and my comfort zone. Yours might be very different. If you’re taller than me, then this dress/tunic becomes a great longer top.
It’s this versatility in the piece that I love.
Because we’re in the middle of a stinky, hot, humid summer, I’ve decided to make this a shorts’ outfit. The shorts are not any longer than the dress but I feel this interpretation of the piece gives me an insurance policy against wind gusts showcasing more of my body than anyone needs to see.
The layered pieces on the hem of the skirt are perfect for engineering into a half tuck and this soft rayon fabric drapes beautifully from the tuck.
White always gets my tick throughout the entire year but add this buff/gold polka dot into the mix and you bring a whole lot of fresh fun to your wardrobe.
Check out more from the new Bohemian Traders Daydreamer collection HERE.
These pieces were gifted to me for editorial consideration. This post contains affiliate links. Full disclosure policy here.
Styling You The Label launch
If you’ve been with Styling You for even a short time, you’ll know I’m all about covering off your wardrobe basics before being seduced by the show pony pieces and that’s what @stylingyouthelabel (yes, there is a new Instagram account happening) is all about. You’ll find quality, easy-care pieces that will make your everyday style so easy. Most of the pieces are made in Australia (winning!) and, yes, leopard print (sneak peek above) is very much a wardrobe basic in my book. There may even be a sequinned piece. Also a neutral. HAH.
We’re also featuring all of our pieces on everyday women (some of your favourite influencers) in sizes 8-18. Yes, we’re the first Australian label to shoot our images using a model for each of the sizes its selling. The models are also all different heights and shapes.
All pieces will be available in the Styling You Shop.
Mark your diaries – tickets for the launch event on February 12 go on sale tomorrow morning. Check our Facebook page or make sure you’re signed up to our email to be first in the know. I don’t want you to miss out.
(And fear not, we’ll still be featuring show pony, on-trend pieces as inspiration from other independent labels in our popular Model and Me and #everydaystyle posts on Styling You – as above.)
