{Editor’s note: you went absolutely crazy for the Motto ponte pants I dubbed as magic because of their comfort plus firming qualities. Most sizes sold out within a day. The fabulous people at Motto have put in a new order for these pants and there is limited stock left available on pre-order (with delivery at the end of April). Trust me, you’ll want these pants in your wardrobe this winter. I also need to let you know that the feature piece of this post is only available in limited quantities. Be quick, if you’d like to make it your own.}

One of my key pieces for any autumn-winter season is a jacket. The right jacket not only provides the level of warmth you need, it also acts like a giant accessory, finishing off your outfit and taking your entire look up about six notches.

For this reason, my love of any style of jacket runs very deep. From a classic blazer though to a bomber or biker style, I’ve got them all in my wardrobe. I’ve got sparkly jackets. I’ve got puffer jackets. I’ve got Chanel-esque boucle jackets. I’ve got tweed and checks, block colours and florals and every pattern in between.

I honestly didn’t think there was one jacket gap in my wardrobe. Until I slipped this one on.

Oh, Motto, you’ve done it again. You’ve taken an on-trend bike-style jacket silhouette and made it feel as good on as it looks. You know my holy grail is a wardrobe filled with clothes that combine comfort plus style. Why suffer with ill-fitting clothes in the name of fashion when you can have great-looking clothes that feel like you’re stepping out in your pyjamas, I say.

Before I show you how to style this season’s essential jacket for casual, work and play, let me take you through the reasons why I love the jacket.

At first glance, it looks and feels like an expensive suede/leather jacket, but it’s actually made from a heavy-weight, stretch ponte that has been foil coated to mimic the look and external feel of real leather. The stretch fabric base means that this jacket sits on the back and shoulders beautifully, without feeling like you’re in a straight jacket.

I have quite a broad back and shoulders, so usually for a jacket to fit and allow me to move while wearing it, I go up a size. The problem that sizing up can then bring is that, while it might allow for more movement and comfort, it may also make me look boxy.

When there is stretch in a jacket, however, I don’t need to size up. Here I’m wearing my regular size 14. The jacket sits well on my shoulders and is comfortable on.

What I also love is that you get the leather look with this jacket but without the leather price or tricky care factor. You can pop this jacket in a delicates bag and put in the wash with other like-coloured garments. Simply hang out to dry, no ironing required. That’s a win for everyone and makes it very useful for travel.

The detailing will turn heads too. Check out the metallic hardware, zip fastenings on the sleeves and real front pockets.

How to style this season’s essential jacket for casual, work and play

You know my thoughts on any wardrobe purchase, yes? I want you to think about how you can wear any purchase more than one way, ideally two or three ways. I also want you to only buy separates that work back with pieces you already own. This is how you build a capsule wardrobe that works FOR you and doesn’t stress you out when getting dressed each morning.

This jacket ticks all of my capsule wardrobe versatility boxes. To show you just how versatile it is, I’ve styled it below three ways … a casual look, an office look and a night out with the girls’ look.

Casual

The below look is my go-to weekend autumn (and Queensland winter!) look. Wearing the jacket back with a cami means I can get away with the sleeves if it’s not really that cold. Add sneakers and I’m good to go – for brunch or the soccer/rugby sidelines.

If you’re in the market for a cami that allows you to wear a normal bra, then this is the one for you. Its shape is super flattering and the length is just right for wearing untucked or half tucked over jeans. Speaking of jeans, these are SUPER comfortable and flattering. Love a mid-wash, distressed denim.

Work

So, we traditionally think of the blazer as the only jacket style suited to Monday-Friday office wear but this jacket can definitely got to work with you. Wear it back with a blouse, culottes and heels for an edgy take on corporate.

The white blouse section of my wardrobe is full to over-flowing but there is always room for one more, especially when it has sleeve detailing like this one. The culottes are a ponte fabric so incredible comfortable and flattering on. The ring detail adds that something extra.

Night out

My autumn-winter “night out with the girls” uniform goes a little something like this: jeans, nice top and heeled boots. Add a jacket for warmth. It’s simple and comfortable but with a slice of fun on the side. Just pass me an espresso martini.

I adore the teal background colour in this top – it gives the pattern beautiful depth, which is what I like in my florals. The shape is easy and flattering and is perfect back with these supremely comfortable, stretch black jeans that do all kinds of wonderful to your legs.

  1. I would wear this fabulous jacket to work with slim leg jeans and a white linen shirt with my white Frankie’s.
Then everyday to the office .

  2. I would wear this with some Motto jeans that I now have to order after hearing about them and a classic white v neck blouse with some long silver chains and some Frankie 4 boots.

  3. I’m thinking I’d wear this with some flowy skirts & dresses, coloured jeans with a printed top or with a short dress & leggings – or no leggings and some killer tall boots. Possibly with my PJ’s also. I love it

  4. I would be seeing the Motto leatherette ponte Harlem jacket featuring almost every day in my awesome once in a lifetime first ever overseas holiday pictures. It will be seen with relaxed pants and a travelling t-shirt at the airport. During the day with and tunic top, boho dress or skirt and cami. And It will be perfect for making sure I’m not cold with a lovely white top and smart black pants as we head out in the evenings. The Harlem jacket will be a star performer on the trip.

  5. I have had to grow out my hair and now I’m very grey and feeling old…. I would love this Motto jacket to wear with brights and prints to jazz up my look! It is such a classic piece and I have never ever had anything like it. Thanks for the chance to enter the competition Nikki and Faye.

  6. I’d wear this jacket with my beautiful Motto white jeans and heels for a night out, and with casual black pants and sneakers for day. It’s perfect for any outfit!

  7. The question is “What WOULDN’T I wear this jacket with?!” I think this jacket would compliment almost all of my winter outfits. I would love it.

  8. I wear a little t of long dresses for work. I think this gorgeous jacket would carve my silhouette in all the right ways to help give me shape. The casual opportunities to wear this are endless and I’m so excited to get
    My mittens on one. Thankyou

  9. That jacket would be perfect with just about everything in my wardrobe and would be come a staple. I’d wear win with jeans and over a little dress. This would be perfect for work in winter.

  10. Oh wow, this jacket is exactly what I need this winter. I’ve been struggling with black jackets for a couple of seasons, and my black leather jacket is too small (and for some reason I refuse to buy a larger one). I’ll wear this jacket with EVERYTHING! Specifically, I can see me wearing it to watch the Swans at the SCG, over a crisp white shirt, with dark blue jeans.

  11. As a Gold Coaster, this gorgeous jacket has the potential to be my winter staple, thanks to our glorious weather! I’d dress it up with Ponte pants and a print top for work, with a flirty dress for drinks and pair it with Motto jeans and a comfy tee for weekend fun.

  12. I would wear this with a black, loose fitting jumpsuit (super comfy!). I could dress it up for nights out or down with my white Frankie4 Nats and a scarf. Love it!!

  13. What can I wear with the Harlem Jacket you ask, well I looked into my crystal ball and a word appeared”Motto”, of course this makes sense another word appeared “Magic” those magic pants and two words appeared “Velvet and Lace” of course the Velvet Lace Cami with various colours to choose from. Overall you can wear it with a tunic, a dress, jeans the options are endless. Gotta Love Motto.

  14. I’ll be wearing this jacket as many ways as possible, with my winter dress with tights and boots for work to my jeans and shirt for out socialising on the weekend. But to forget , wearing it out for coffee, shopping and just round to friends for dinner. Teamed up with flats, heels or boots, add a splash of colour with your top or jewellery or bag. The opportunities are endless because it’s such a versatile and great looking jacket.

  15. Sue
I would love to win this jacket – layering is key in my winter wardrobe and it looks like this is a go-to number for the cooler months. I have a jacket collection but nothing like this one – and I always find the fit a bit tricky – I’m about the same size as you Nicky so can see myself in the jacket for sure!!!

  16. I would love to wear this jacket with the motto pants I now need to purchase, and a classic white tshirt. I’m loving all the outfits you have shown too, need to get myself to Motto!!!

  17. I’m a nail tech so movement in a jacket in paramount. To be able to still file nails comfortably in a jacket is winning! So for me personally I’d team it with a floral floaty short dress and ankle boots. Styling it boho I think would be the perfect story

  18. Looks like I definitely need MOTTO in my wardrobe especially this essential jacket! I’d team it with anything MOTTO…. I’m converted!

  19. Cami, slim jeans and ankle boot
Will make this jacket look cute
    Definitely my winter style
Warm and comfy makes me smile

  20. Such a versatile piece like this I’d pair with many items, jeans and a top, work pants and work top, casual tee and jeans, maxi dress, the potential combinations are endless.

  21. This jacket and I would be instant BFFs! I could see us together, having coffee on James St, rocking a boho wrap dress and ankle boots. We’d hit The river bar at Friday 5pm, showing how great my new jacket looks with some sharp black Capri pants, white high collared shirt and Anthropologie -style statement necklace. Early Saturday morning, it would be on with the stretch blue jeans and striped T, on the drive to Coolum for brunch with friends. I could see us lamenting the end of the weekend together, wine in hand, solving all the problems of the world, in leggings and my oversized shocking pink, shaggy Zara number and uggs. Oh, the places my new BBF and I would go!

  22. Such a versatile jacket! It could be worn with almost anything. My choice would be with jeans and a T for casual wear and over a maxi with boots for going out.

  23. I’d wear it with STYLE – everything is in the detail
Layering different textures and materials would keep me looking stylish and ‘put together’ in my MOTTO jacket.
    Black is anything but boring!

  24. Love the Motto interpretation of the popular biker jacket. The ponte version makes it soft and easy to wear, yet very stylish. Living in Melbourne I would style the jacket with my usual distressed jeans and a chunky knit but I also really like the culotte look with it for the office or going out. The jacket is such a versatile piece!

  25. This jacket would be an excellent addition to my wardrobe, as it would be the start of the long overdue wardrobe makeover! I received my magic pants yesterday and they are magic. Thank you Nikki for the super recommendation. ps I went down a size and the are perfect xx

  26. I would love to wear this jacket for work with some of my maxi skirts and boots for winter. I would also love it for popping on with some jeans – the jacket would add not only warmth in the winter but look trendy 🙂 I also travel a lot with work and see it being easy to pop in my luggage and pop out ready to wear.

  27. I’d wear this beautiful Motto Jacket with a black t, my denim or black pencil skirt, tights and my ankle boots…. and an aura of confidence as I stride out the door knowing I’m ready for anything and looking sharp! I’ve tecently lost 40 kilos and have such limited items to choose from as I’m varefully curating new pieces so that my wardrobe works for me.

  28. This fabulous jacket would take so many things in my wardrobe to a higher level but I have a khaki jumpsuit and ankle boot combo at the top of the list

  29. I love the look of this Motto jacket I have some great lace up ankle I purchased recently in France, an olive green colour, would look fab with denim skinny jeggins a classic linen shirt white or nice scarf for colour and the gorgeous jacket not forgetting some tassel earrings, Love it Alana

  30. I’d wear a big smile!!! My Mother used to nag at me to sit up straight and smile. She said the way you carry yourself has more of an impact on how you look than any acne remedy or trick for applying makeup. Following that with a smile and direct eye contact is the clincher. You can look like death warmed up, but if you’re holding yourself just so, you can wear the “dead” look so much better.

  31. I could team this superb jacket with so many items I wear as we head into winter, would make any outfit look the bomb. Give me added confidence knowing I’m looking so stylishly dressed and ready for the cooler evenings.

  32. I would team this gorgeous jacket with a 3/4 floral dress, black leggings and ankle boots. Perfect feminine autumn combination.

  33. I would wear this great jacķet with a huge smile on my face feeling confident, comfortable and warm. It is perfect for casual and dressup occasions from ripped jeans to silk trousers. Fingers and toes crossed that it comes and fills a ponte sized hole in my autumn/winter wardrobe

  34. This jacket looks fabulous – I can see it going with jeans, dresses, ponte pants – everything! Maybe it would be easier to say what I wouldn’t wear it with!

  35. Hooley Dooley – this jacket is freakin’ awesome – so getting the gorgeous chiffon tunic & magic pants

  36. I would like to wear with long dress as its time to experiment as everything is in fashion as long as you are comfortable and bold to carry the outfit with all positive energy.

  37. everything – i wear my leather jacket at work and play but it feels a bit tight sometimes, a stretch leather jacket would be the perfect addition to my wardrobe

  38. I’ve just bought this jacket to wear with my new ponte pants,
I will wear it with skirts and nice heels to a dance.
I will take it to Paris when I go to France,
I will wear it to breakfast and, to the dinner dance,
I will wear it when sightseeing and I’ll smile like a star,
I’ll be the envy of women from all lands afar.

  39. I’d wear it with everything. Jersey dress with leggings and knee high boots, jeans and a t-shirt, and my date outfit of silky navy pants and sequin tank to add a friend boy edge and keep me warm from the cool Tassie nights.

  40. I would wear this awesome jacket with my boho dresses , skirts and tops. Such a versatile piece. It would look great with my whole wardrobe.

  41. Perfect addition to my wardrobe. Heading over to Germany later this year and a perfect jacket to go from a day trip with jeans and a classic T through to dinner wearing my Motto magic ponte pants and teal shirt.

  42. Oh my what an awesome jacket! I would wear it with everything!! Seriously though I live in jeans and tops in winter and this would look so much nice than my standard old cardi but still comfy enough to wear all day. And on the odd occasion I escape the kids and get out on the town I would pair it with my pink floral tigerlily dress and cowboy boots!

  43. I ordered this jacket today! It will go with almost everything in the capsule wardrobe I am putting together for a trip to the USA.

  44. I would wear this jacket with my knee length royal blue/paisley dress which has
a high neck, along with my long back boots. It is a wow dress, and being polyester is not suitable for summer dressing. However, with a jacket such as the leatherette jacket, it is perfect for transeasonal dressing. The black jacket and boots tie the look together, and I would probably try to wear royal blue earrings.

  45. Wow! A versitile jacket like this is just what I need for my family holiday later this year. Saving all our money for the trip means no extra budget for clothing so this would be fabulous!

  46. I would wear this with everything from a floral dress to ripped jeans and boots. So versatile! My current leather jacket is old and *ahem* miiiiiight not actually fit anymore after a few kids 😉

  47. WOW, love how this Motto jacket can change the look of an outfit. Day wear to dressing up for a smart night out.
I would live in it, and feel so good.
    Great design, well done Motto.

  48. I love the flattering lines of this jacket, I would team it with a
flared long sleeved denim top with white lace overlay cuffs and lace edged neckline and a long layered denim skirt and black laced peep toe boots!

  49. Whatever Styling You tells me to wear with it….. the jeans and white singlet is my pick in this case.
I am good at a lot of things, I outsource those that I am not to people with talent in that area, In this case Motto to design and produce stylish clothing and Styling You to advise how to wear it and pair it.

  50. A jacket like this could go all ways but with a floral skirt would be where it stays. I love love love the style and drape, my wardrobe certainly needs a reshape!

  51. I have just ordered the Motto ponte magic pant with the Rust Woolly knit top to take overseas later this year. The Motto jacket would be perfect to pair with this outfit. I travel carry on only and take 3 bottoms and five tops with lots of scarves and the jacket would be perfect for evening or daytime.

  52. I’ve been looking for a jacket like this for ages and would pair with a soft flowy silk kaftan as I love the juxtaposition of the hard v pretty. Could also tuck kaftan at the front into black pointe or leather-look pants with black boots or peep toe shoe-boots. Would also pair it with a floral maxi dress and ankle boots. For a casual look I’d pair with black and white striped top, blue jeans or black pointe pants and silver or black sneakers. Also with a rose gold foil spot top and my rose gold slip-on kicks.

  53. I would wear this beautiful jacket with some wide leg trousers I have with big silver coloured flowers on them, my black cami and silver Beth’s (frankie4) Lovely!

  54. “City Chic” … teamed with a classic Prince of Wales check skirt and my all time favourite white silky shirt,
“Friday Drinks” … definitely jeans, killer heels and my hand painted cami, that was love at first sight 🙂
“Shopping & flicks” (with the girls) … I’d go pale pink, in a simple knit dress, boots and a crazy one of a kind statement scarf,
Seriously, this jackets so amazing it would look fantastic even with my Zebra Print ONESIES (but don’t tell anyone, that’s our little secret 🙂 )

  55. I have never found a jacket that looks great but also feels great and from your description this jacket is both. I would wear this gorgeous jacket all winter long, perfect to dress up or wear on weekends with jeans. I also love you can wash it yourself, I am not a fan of drycleaning.

  56. I think this jacket is so versatile I would choose to wear it with most things, but I think I would choose slim or boyfriend jeans or black slim trousers and a oversized white shirt!

  57. I would wear the jacket with pretty much everything, out goes the “what shall I wear to school drop off” this will make 3/4 jeans and a tshirt look ultra stylish.

  58. I love this look. I haven’t had a jacket like this for too long. I’d wear it with everything to get me through Autumn, Winter and Spring. T-shirts, singlet tops and shirts will all look 100% better with this jacket. Your description of a large accessory is so right. The difference a jacket like this makes (also a well fitted blazer) is to ramp any top/dress/look right up to SMART! Love it thanks Nikki.

  59. This jacket will give me the edgy look I need. I know that I would wear it with the magic motto black ponte pants (once they arrive) and a classic white tshirt and black boots. Another go to look for me would be with distressed skinny jeans, any top and my cream Nats. I know there is certainly a place for this jacket in my wardrobe.

  60. You can’t go past wearing this jacket with a pair of skinny jeans, white tee, big floppy hat and some wrist bling. Chuck on a pair of converse and out you go – ready to tackle a coffee and a slice of banana bread and a morning of sideline sports!

  61. I’d wear it with white jeans and a cami during the day and over a long sleeved dress in the evening, with ankle boots.
Perfect for Brisbane weather and I love its flexibility factor! It would also go well with my new Motto black pants!!

  62. I would love to wear this Motto jacket with a cute knee length skirt and cute sequin blouse and wedges for anight out with hubby.

  63. I’d wear this jacket how Nikki has shown but a few different ways too – with a maxi or longer wrap style dress for running around town doing chores, with a striped jersey dress (love a bit of nautical) and white sneakers for easy weekend wear with the kids sports and finally, over a little black dress and heeled boots for adding a little bit of rock star vibe to my night out!

  64. I will be able to wear this jacket most days to work as the current workplace is more smart casual. I can see myself wearing the lovely jacket with jersey dresses, opaque tights and boots; jeans on casual fridays; pencil skirts and blouses too. It’ll definitely be a must have for weekends.

  65. I’d wear this fab jacket with jeans and boots, which is my typical Autumn/Winter look. What I LOVE about the Harlem jacket is its timelessness – I love the fact that the style won’t date and I can wear it for years to come. It goes right along with my fashion philosophy – buy less clothes but buy better clothes that I can wear forever.

  66. I’m a Melbourne girl and I would love to wear Motto’s Harlem jacket with their gorgeous Andy blouse, the perfect colour for my fair complexion and hair, together with my designer ankle zip mid blue slim leg jeans and heels. My niece’s 21st party in early May would suit this outfit perfectly and take all the worry away about what to wear

  67. I travel a lot for work so this would be perfect to take on flights (always chilly) but also to suit once I get to the office – again always chilly in the air-con. Looks great so it would work with whatever my wardrobe needs to be.

  68. This jacket is THE bomb it would seriously go with anything in my wardrobe- a maxi, black skirt/top/tights/ankle boots (my staple), jeans. It would fill a massive gap in my wardrobe- I adore it!

  69. I would definitely grab that lush Motto Green Velvet Sienna Dress to go with this gorgeous jacket for a night out. The mix and contrasts of fabrics really bring both pieces to life.

  70. I would put that beautiful Motto jacket with:
    Black jeans
    Blush colored ankle boots
    A hot pink flowing top
Beautiful silver earrings, rings and bracelet
    Hair out and flowing
Soft natural make up as to not take away from my fabulous Motto jacket
And a big beautiful smile to top it off because I had just won the black Motto jacket….which I would be telling everyone to go out and buy!!!!!

  71. I think I could wear this jacket with just about everything I own! Stepped out of my comfort zone yesterday, tried on a floral shirt with mustard background, loved it, so bought a pair of mustard tassel earrings to wear with it. Would be perfect with this jacket! Happy Friday! x

  72. Thanks to Motto, this winter I won’t look grotto
This jacket would be just the racket
For jeans and a T-shirt, or a gorgeous jersey dress wouldn’t hurt
    Thanks xxx

  73. I have a grey knit dress that would pair amazingly with this beautiful jacket… and sneakers. Because sneakers are life.

  74. I’d wear this jacket with a huge smile … and I have a pair of ankle boots that would perfectly complement the jacket. Who cares what’s between the boots and jacket – the jacket is the hero!

  75. I would wear this beautiful jacket with my new magic pants I have on back order for a rocking look with a red cami underneath and matching red boots as I have only recently turned 50 and as they say you only live once baby!

  76. My first thought of what would I wear the Motto jacket with was jeans. But seeing how you teamed it with the culottes shows you could match it up with anything as it’s that versatile!

  77. My new Motto black Magic pants will need this gorgeous jacket to take me from work mid-week to Leisure Chic! Under it I’ll wear a crisp white linen top with classic pearls or add some bling for weekend light.

  78. This jacket is definitely going to be my go to work jacket for this winter. I would team it with a blouse and slimline pants and I would be set to go for the day.

  79. I have a plum boho maxi dress that I would wear the jacket with. Add my flat mid boots and I think it would make the outfit more edgy and give my shape more definition.

  80. How would I wear this? Hmmm…

    My skinny distressed jeans
    Or pretty floral dress
    Tan ankle boots
    Trendy statement jewellery
    Oh my!

  81. I want to wear more of my summery items this winter (Brissie girl) and would love to pair this jacket with my long black based floral boho maxi skirt and a chambray shirt. Frankie4 boots will finish off my outfit

  82. I would love to wear this beautiful jacket over my Camilla kaftans & harems with boots for a causal or glam look.

  83. I would wear this with a classic crisp white linen shirt and skinny leg jeans and boots for that classic and classy comfortable look.

  84. I struggle with evening wear and to have a jacket that transforms across all parts of the day is awesome!! I am totally crushing on the Motto teal floral Andy blouse and Nikki’s whole look!!!

  85. Ponte Harlem Jacket can take me from casual dress up style to work to dinner with skirts dresses n boots my favourite style for aSydney winter

  86. I would love to wear this essential jacket with my blue floral wrap dress and ankle boots .
Or a tank and distressed jeans with heels or boots.

  87. I live in jeans and boots in winter, this jacket woud be the perfect accessory to be my new favourite item of clothing, next to my new Motto pants.
    Karen

  88. I would love to wear this gorgeous jacket with one of my maxi dresses and some boots. I live in Brisbane so the weather is still mild. The jacket would look superb with a teal coloured maxi I have in my wardrobe!
