The Model and Me: Lola Australia high summer 2018

Hello and welcome to another year of Model and Me posts here on Styling You. If you’re new around these parts, these posts started quite by accident back in 2010.

I’d beem asked to model for a local boutique which was organising a parade to showcase Metalicus fashion pieces. The models were everyday women of all shapes and sizes. Me? A size size 14-16. Full marks to the boutique – it was showcasing that Metalicus was not just a label for size 8s.

One of the outfits I wore that night was pictured on a model on the Metalicus Facebook page, so I thought, HAH … there’s the model wearing the same dress I’m wearing. She looks great in it but it looks great on me too. Same, same but different.

So, I wrote a blog post about it and included a photo of both the model and me in the same garment and a blogging series was born.

The thing is, I don’t do these posts to say I look “better” in the garment. I do it to show an alternative view of the garment on a different size. I’m currently a size 14 and 166cm, so in labels and styles true to size, that’s the size you’ll see me wearing. Most models in fashion campaign images are size 6-8 and at least 180cm tall. They are going to look VERY different in the same garment.

And that’s ok!

Vive la difference.

My point is that most of us are visual people and, if our only visual reference for fashion are professional models, then it’s very, very difficult for us to imagine us in those clothes. So we don’t buy them.

The clever brands now offering us one, two or three visual reference points are leading the way in fashion marketing. And we’re adding to cart!

We’re still very much in the thick of summer, so our 2018 launch Model and Me post features a brand that allows us to dress for summer in style … Lola Australia. Read on for a great offer from this label. You won’t want to miss it.

and me

Lola Australia maxi dress | Moe Design earrings | Adorne clutch | FRANKiE4 Footwear ALYCE wedges

Lola Australia maxi dress (I’m in size 14) | Moe Design earrings | Adorne clutch (only 3 left in the Styling You Shop) | FRANKiE4 Footwear ALYCE wedges (back in stock!)

Ok, so I’m wearing the same maxi dress as the model – just in a different colour – it’s the type of summer dress that will see you through these ridiculously hot months in style.

{You might prefer the pink or the white maxi options in this dress – or the same style but in a midi or top. You can check them all out HERE.}

For starters, it’s quality cotton. YAY for breathable fashion when the heat and humidity is on.

For seconders, we’ve got a style of maxi dress that does not overwhelm and make you feel like you’re wearing a tent.

The v-neck and tassels create a flattering line, as does the waist tie that can be either worn tightly to define a waist or loosely to just offer a hint. I’m on the looser side. I’ve got a short waist, so a hint of shape is more flattering than a defined shape.

The fabric then falls in a slight a-line. This is perfect for me, just enough relaxation in the drape without it feeling like it’s overwhelming.

As with all Lola Australia designs, it’s the detail that you’ll also fall in love with. This print is fun on its own but it’s highlighted with little mirrors scattered throughout the dress. Talk about summer sparkle in a frock.

I’ve worked it back with earrings and a clutch that pick up the accent colour but toned it back down with my go-to summer heel, the FRANKiE4 Footwear ALYCE in tan. I can’t tell you how excited I am that these are now back in stock. The light tan of the leather and this style of shoe pretty much works with all my high-summer outfits and is SO comfortable to wear. Do yourself a favour and don’t miss out this time around.

Get your wardrobe sorted for the New Year

Nikki Parkinson | Styling You

The start of the school year usually marks a line in the sand for me in terms of back-to-work and back to a regular routine.

In my head – and in my wardrobe – I’m still at the beach or playing resorts at home. But there is business to be done. It’s time to get my wardrobe working again for a new year.

I know I’m not alone.

Maybe you work in an office, maybe you work from home, maybe you’re a stay-at-home mum or grannie? If you want to get your wardrobe organised for the year ahead so that you feel comfortable, confident and appropriately dressed for whatever your day dishes up, then my upcoming back-to-work mini capsule online style program is for you.

We’ll be launching early February, and much like our Ultimate Capsule Wardrobe programs, I’ll be offering up a capsule wardrobe for inspiration. You’ll create your own capsule based on my prompts and we’ll share two weeks’ of outfits together in our dedicated Facebook group.

Stay tuned for more details, but if you’d like to try and win one of 5 spots in this style program, head on over to this blog post.

  1. Hi Nikki, Happy Monday! Love navy and I love this dress. Maxi and cool ticks all my boxes. It’s soooo hot still. And a few more weeks of it to come yet. I love Model and Me, I would never dream of even trying some of the outfits until you show them. I am struggling to find myself these days, used to be easy – uniforms for work, being a grandma or partner. Now looking after Mum and Dad, it’s baggy shorts, tshirt and hat in the yard. We have had a massive clean out today yahoo! Mum tends to hoard while Dad is like me, if in doubt throw it out! Mum had an Osti dress still with it’s tag for $20.99. That is a throw back to the 70s, I don’t think Osti have been around for a while. Mum and Dad are asleep now, post lunch, I made them Thai fried rice with herbs and vegetables straight from the garden. My time to hop on the net and have a look. xx
