Gaga for black and white checks? Here’s how to style gingham

Nikki Parkinson Fashion, How to 14 Comments

There I was a couple of weeks ago in the change room of Bohemian Trader’s boutique (located on the New South Wales’ Central Coast), trying on a tonne of different styles but mentally pondering the First World wardrobe question:

How much gingham is too much?

AND as I put another gingham dress and top on the counter:

Do I need a gingham intervention?

Putting my mind at ease, because GINGHAM, I assured myself that I would get SO much wear out of all my gingham pieces and that the trend was not disappearing any time soon.

Less than a week later, this justification was validated. I wandered into Country Road to check out the new arrivals and couldn’t gaze left, right or straight ahead without my eyes doing that bulgy-eye emoji thing because FRESH GINGHAM everywhere.

I’ve tried and tried to analyse my obsession with this print and all I can put it down to is my love of classics with a fun, flirty twist.

Also, black and white ARE my favourite wardrobe colours (SHH, I know black and white are not strictly colours but I love them so I will not have them labelled as anything else), so when you combine them, it’s a win-win.

This combination is a stand-out on its own or worked back with black or white pieces and accessories but it’s also the perfect blank canvas for adding a pop of colour on top. Think all the jewel colours – fuchsia, cobalt blue, emerald green, ruby red. I also don’t mind popping a tan shoe or bag back with a gingham arrangement.

I love that it’s a print that works for a casual or a more dressed-up outfit. The right pieces will take you from weekend brunch through to the office and out to drinks – just change up your footwear and maybe add a white blazer.

There are so many gingham tops, dresses, pants and jackets out there right now, all for the embracing. Below I’ve done a round up of some of my faves, plus I’ve included in this post some of the gingham from my wardrobe for inspiration on how to style gingham.

If you’re still on the chequered fence, now is the time to jump on over.

A gingham piece will help freshen up your summer wardrobe but will also take you through to autumn and winter. Gingham LOVES denim, so when it cools down, simply add jeans or a denim jacket to keep it looking fresh.

  1. Thank you! I may have just bought the Portmans wrap top using your link! It’s gorgeous. I so hope it fits. I have a lovely red and white gingham OTS top I love but I have been very restrained from buying too much gingham which I slightly regret!! I adore gingham. X

  2. You look lovely and fresh in gingham. What size did you get in the Bohemian Traders gingham laidback shirt? I am having trouble deciding on sizes when buying from BT lately as a lot of things are oversized and I prefer a little less volume. But at the same time I don’t want to go too small and ruin the look. You have gone M in the gingham billow sleeve top – is this your usual size in BT or have you sized down? Sorry for all the questions but having you as a size reference really helps when choosing sizes.

  3. Loved this! Whilst I do not have any gingham in my wardrobe (yet) I have always loved the black & white combination. I wore a black & white gingham jumpsuit to my then Boyfriend’s 21st! This post brought back the memories!

  4. I loved the BT gingham dress you were twirling around on IG. I love the freshness of gingham. I bought the $15 red and white gingham OTS from KMart to wear on Xmas day, saw a lady in the black and white version and she looked great! I just bought a white denim jacket for the cooler weather (how is that for wishful thinking) and will be adding that to the dress. Ooooh keep looking at the BT dress…I am so short it would still be a decent length on me 😀

Glad to hear you’re on Team Gingham Kathryn! And yes, if you’re shorter than me then that BT dress will be fabulous. I don’t mind it shorter on me but I know some don’t like their knees showing. Was happy to go down a size for less volume.
