Long before I started this blog, Styling You, or wrote my book, Unlock Your Style, I had a yearning born from my own love affair with fashion and clothes.
You see, I never really felt super confident in both my own skin and what I put on top of that skin. It was a bit of a hit and a miss affair with no real sense of style direction.
I’m not someone who was born with an innate ability to put together an outfit that turned heads for all the right reasons. I’m someone who, from a young age, loved to dress up in new clothes but I didn’t really find my groove until post-40. Even now I consider my style a work in progress.
My obsession with clothes meant that I had a wardrobe filled with pieces that I thought worked for me but mostly they didn’t. They certainly didn’t work with each other.
I struggled to find inspiration from anyone on how to tame the obsession and develop my own style.
There always seemed to be such a disconnect between what I’d see in magazines and what I wanted to see and wear in my wardrobe.
Apart from the Captain Obvious – I’m not a super tall and super thin super model – it would frustrate me no end that a magazine’s fancy, editorial fashion shoots were all about the “art” of the finished image, with little thought as to how their readers needed to actually see the garment to have any hope of trying to work out if it would work for them.
I’ve got no doubt the fashion brands featured loved any glossy magazine feature but I truly wonder how it translated to sales of their product. And isn’t that the point. Fashion brands are businesses. They need to sell their product to survive. They need to CONNECT with their potential customer.
Fast forward to today and the way that fashion brands connect with their customers is firmly in the court of the brands themselves. Social media has been a great leveller in that respect. Amen to that.
What I’VE sought out to do as part of that social media mix is create a welcoming, supportive space for women like me. Women who want to feel good in what they wear but are looking for a little guidance along the way.
What Styling You is all about
It’s not about an age or size thing. It’s about an EVERY woman thing.
It’s about my taking some of the current trends and sharing with you how you could add them to your wardrobe.
It’s about respecting that everyone has a different style personality – or personalities.
It’s about being listened to and supported when you have a question about a purchase or an outfit you may be putting together.
It’s not being made to feel silly for wanting to try something new.
It’s about feeling as good as you can feel about yourself. Right now. Not when you lose 5kg.
It’s about embracing a level of confidence you didn’t know you had.
All those things. Those are the reasons why I show up here and those are the reasons why I developed the Ultimate Capsule Wardrobe online style program.
The program is like having me as your personal stylist on tap for six weeks but it’s more than that.
It’s a community of women who are there for each other and inspiring each other every step of the way.
That’s where the magic happens.
Here is what some of those women have had to say about the program:
The UCW, more than anything, has helped me stay current using (close to vintage) “classic” pieces alongside just a few seasonal additions. I have learnt more about my style through this process than any other attempts made. Since joining the group our 29-year-old daughter has commented that she is taking notice and actions on my style, which is just nuts to me! Karen
I find the suggestions for office wear very useful, especially for this season as summer is hot in Perth and I find work wear a challenge. Janet
One thing that the UCW program has helped me with is cleaning out my wardrobe, looking carefully at what I have currently and how I could use that in the current capsule. Last Spring I found I had most items with the exception of one or two items. I love being part of the community and reading all the information everyone shares. Helen
I joined the first capsule because my off-duty summer wardrobe was stagnant and I really needed some fresh ideas. It well and truly revitalised the way I looked at my existing clothes, but more than that, seeing other members’ combinations and ideas inspired me too. I’ve joined my third capsule now, not because I can’t find my way around my wardrobe, but because I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s interpretations to inspire my own ideas. It’s about learning what new and interesting things you can do with what you’ve got. I love the encouragement, friendship and inspiration of the group and don’t want to miss out! Nicoll
As a cancer survivor who had a double mastectomy without reconstruction, I have enjoyed regaining my confidence in clothes and feeling feminine. Fiona
So, if you’ve been on the fence about joining – and you are looking for advice, a supportive community and a tonne of inspiration, it’s time to act.
Registrations close Monday, September 18, 2017. We won’t be running another UCW program until autumn next year.
