I’m a visual person – I understand things better when I see them – but I’m also a tactile person. I love the FEEL of things.
Show me a faux fur vest, a super soft knit or a sleek leather pant and I’ll be unable to resist the urge to stroke said pieces. If that makes me borderline whacky, then so be it.
This winter, the fabric you’ll find me stroking the most is velvet. Velvet is back baby.
It’s one of those fabrics that come around again every few winters and I, for one, am extremely grateful for its ability to continually rise from the fashion trend ashes.
There is something so luxe about wearing velvet – particularly black velvet. I think that’s the appeal for me. It’s an immediate dress-up moment as soon as you slip into something created from this fabric.
This morning I was on Studio 10 for Adrift wearing these velvet pants (I almost stroked them on national TV … oops … tactile!).
And for this post, I’m featuring a velvet skirt and lace top combination from Hunt + Kelly.
The model
Hunt+Kelly limited edition Siouxsie lace beaded top | Hunt + Kelly limited edition Magic skirt in black velvet
and me
Hunt+Kelly top (I’m in size 2 but the size 1 is a better fit for me now) and skirt (I’m in size 2) | Nine West heels (not current) | Nicole Fendel earrings
The Hunt + Kelly Magic skirt is a favourite of mine. I’ve got it in several colours, including the original black. It’s magical qualities come from its double-sided design and wide waistband.
The effect of this styling sorcery is that your shape is streamlined in a flattering way, yet comfort reigns supreme. When you add luxe velvet into the mix, then the magical result is magnified.
There is no better contrast to velvet than lace. Like a leather and lace combo, velvet and lace is a match made in outfit heaven.
This lace and beaded top is not only finished beautifully, it’s designed to sit well across the shoulders, floating down to below the hips. It is see-through, so I’ve popped a black cami underneath. You might be just as comfortable and confident wearing a black bra.
When worn together, this outfit is ideal for an autumn-winter occasion. Separately, I’d wear the skirt back with a tee, denim jacket and sneakers for a casual alternative. I’d also happily wear the lace top with denim jeans and boots.
So tell me, how are you feeling about velvet making a return to our wardrobes? On board?
