7 ways to add texture to winter outfits

Nikki ParkinsonEveryday Style, Fashion, How to 11 Comments

I was at the butchers yesterday and a woman accidentally bumped into me.

You know if you do that to someone else, your natural instinct is to give that person a reassuring pat on the shoulder as you say sorry?

Well yesterday, the reassuring pat I was on the receiving end of as I almost fell into the small goods section turned into several pats before the woman realised what she was doing.

I don’t blame her though. I was wearing a luxe faux fur vest that even I cannot refrain myself from stroking.

Texture – good texture – is EVERYTHING in a winter outfit.

Add texture and it offers sensory play for any fashion-loving woman.

Which is why I was so excited to see the 600-plus posts this month from the real women of #everydaystyle sharing the ways they add texture to winter outfits.

Scroll through the #sytexture hashtag for so much inspiration but below I’ve picked out different categories of texture and style as seen on 15 of those women.

You can see the way that even adding a small element of texture to an outfit can lift it up several notches. It’s such a great outfit technique to employ – especially during the winter months when we tend to wear more neutrals.

Read on for the winner of this month’s challenge and details about the #everydaystyle challenge for next month.

Faux fur: this is one of my fave textures for winter and it seems I’m not alone. Faux fur adds an element of luxury to an outfit – even if that outfit is a pair of jeans and a tee.

Leather: leather or faux-leather/pleather is another texture that adds a certain luxe element to an outfit. Its smooth finish makes for an ideal contrast to a knit or faux fur. Black leather will always be in style but the hottest colour this season has been caramel/tobacco. Wear a leather jacket over a maxi dress or back with jeans and a tee. Leather pants or skirts make great alternatives to jeans and leggings.

Suede: The ’70s trend has ensured that suede has made a big comeback and what we’ve seen is the emergence of some faux suede fabrics that in my opinion feel better/softer to wear than the real thing. They’re certainly easier to clean.

Knits: Nothing says winter in an outfit as well as a cosy knit. Cosy doesn’t have to equal big and chunky though. Think merino and cashmere for winter knits with warmth without the bulk.

Lace: Lace is a year-round texture that adds a feminine touch to an outfit. Mix up lace with denim or leather and you have a great contrast of pretty and tough.

Scarves: We talked how to wear a scarf here but scarves and wraps are a super easy way to add texture to any outfit.

Hats: I love seeing other people pull of a hat look for winter. For starters they’re incredibly practical for keeping you warm and sun safe but they also make a fabulous textural style statement from the top down.

  1. Thanks for the inclusion! Love Maudie’s style – great choice. And judging by today’s outfit, I must have had a premonition about layers! Looking forward to the next challenge. x

  2. I love these regular updates.
So much inspiration for what to wear right now from all these stars of Instagram. Especially as I think I have lots of these elements (or similar) in my wardrobe. Apart from the hats- love those winter hats!

  3. What a lovely surprise Nikki, I thoroughly enjoyed this challenge as I have a classic style which can be very boring during our hot summers. Adding texture to my winter looks or layers (next challenge) make them more interesting. Congrats to all who are featured or who played along, you are all an inspiration. And thank you to Vigorella for my lovely prize. Most jealous of you and your upcoming holiday Nikki, enjoy.

  4. Looking lovely ladies – thanks for the inspiration. I love to wear a hat, but struggle with balancing with other accessories. Do certain types of hat look better with certain hairstyles, face shapes? What colour should it be? A “how to wear a hat” post would be a great help Nikki. Xx
