8 ways to add autumnal elements to your outfit

Nikki Parkinson Everyday Style, Fashion, How to 16 Comments

When I announced the #SYAW16 monthly style challenge, I did not know just how much of a challenge it would be.

It’s been far from autumnal where I live and, even in the southern states, there has been unseasonably warm weather.

BUT. Oh my, the real women of #everydaystyle love a challenge and they’ve offered up more than 1200 ideas for how to add autumnal elements to your outfit … even when the weather hasn’t got the memo that the seasons have changed.

You can search the #SWAW16 hashtag here and get more ideas than I could publish in this post.

I’m re-sharing just a fraction of that inspiration here – along with some tips to embrace in your wardrobe. Make sure you click on the Instagram link on each photo and follow these fab women if you don’t do so already.

8 ways to add autumnal elements to your outfit #SYAW16 #everydaystyle

8 ways to add autumnal elements

1. Shirts as jackets

This is a great way to bring long-sleeved shirts into play when the temperatures are still mild. Throw over a tee or tank, roll up the sleeves and wear fully open or partially buttoned with a half-tuck.

2. Animal print

My love for all thing animal print is well documented. I’ll trot out animal print all year round but it really does bring instant autumn or winter to an outfit. I love its surprise factor – wear in shoes, a scarf, a handbag and release the animal instinct from within.

3. Autumnal colours

You’d not find distinct autumnal colours in my wardrobe – most (excepting navy/indigo/mustard/red) don’t really suit me. I can’t call black an autumnal colour as I wear it all year round. These ladies below, however, lead the way by embracing the colours of autumn 2016.

4. Textures

Textures will come into even bigger wardrobe play in a couple of months when we’re heading into the thick of winter. For now, they still work to give an outfit an autumnal element that adds interest and detail to the overall look. Think knits, leather and textured fabrics and you’re on the right track here.

5. Ankle boots

The ankle boot is the easiest way to turn your summer outfit into autumn. Simply add to an outfit with bare legs and you’re staking a claim on all things trans-seasonal. (Check out this post for more ideas on how to style an ankle boot – and how you could win a pair.)

6. Sleeveless layers

This is such a super sneaky – but oh, so clever – way to bring autumn interest to your outfits. The vest is sleeveless so you can choose a sleeve length to wear underneath that suits the weather of the day.

7. Lightweight scarves

I have to admit that the majority of the scarves I own fall into the lightweight category. This is the style of scarf I can wear (almost) all year round. They add immediate interest to an outfit and cleverly disguise any spills that might occur throughout the day … please tell me that’s just not me.

8. Denim

Early season denim days are to be treasured. I want to see more of your denim style in April – read on for details about how to join in and inspire us all with your Denim Days’ looks.
