Let’s talk jeans.

Whether they’re skinny, ripped, or even boyfriend style, they are the BEST thing about winter … and can be for summer too.

Nearly every woman owns their fair share, and I think we can all agree that the fit of a jean can be the make or break.

So ladies, what type of ‘jeans girl’ are you? Boot cut? Straight leg? … High rise?

The skinny jean

As you may have already suspected, I am a ‘skinny jean’ type of girl (and yes, just about every one of you can wear them too!)

I love my jeans in both blue and black, and cropped at the ankle. I’m also a high rise type of girl.

But what I love the most about the skinny jean is that they can be worn for either a night out, or just for casual, everyday wear.

So why not pair your favourites back with converse and a sloppy joe, or if you’re after something a little less casual, try heeled boots and a knit.

Who doesn’t love the best of both worlds?

Blue skinny jeans

1. Abrand high skinny jean (la blues) $99.95 | 2. Ziggy sticks and bones jean (vintage trash) $90 | 3. Lee hi riders (blue sparrow) $99.95

Do you rock the blue jean, or prefer black? Or are you like me, and indulge in both?

Black skinny jeans

1. Lee hi riders (ex black) $99.95 | 2. Abrand high skinny jean (black) $99.95 | 3. Ziggy sticks and bones jean (black) $90

Boyfriend jeans

Now let’s move onto boyfriend jeans … love or loathe them? Unlike skinny jeans, this particular style isn’t for everyone.

However, if you are brave enough to try out this look, stick to cropped length tops. This will allow you to balance out the baggy proportion, and who knows … you might just rock it!

Boyfriend jean: casual look

Boyfriend jean casual look

1. Abrand mom jean (la blues) $99.95 | 2. Sportsgirl textured maritime sweat $69.95 ($34.97 on sale at time of publishing) | 3. Country Road olena pouch $49.95 ($14.98 on sale at time of publishing)

Not a fan of the sporty look? Why not swap the converse for boots or heels, and ditch the pullover for a more glamorous knit.

Boyfriend jean: smart-casual look

1. One Teaspoon cobain super baggies $140 ($56 on sale at One Teaspoon at time of publishing) | 2. Country Road stepped hem roll-neck knit $149 | 3. Lipstik tara boot (taupe) $89.95

Now that we have the style part covered, here are three golden rules to remember when purchasing your beloved denim.

How to buy the perfect pair of jeans:

1. Feel the fabric first

2. Find the right rise for your body shape (i.e. low, mid, high)

3. Check the length and fit, and make sure they’re quite snug (usually a size or two down will do the trick, to allow room to stretch)

Now it’s over to you Stylers … what kind of jean girl are you? And do you like or loathe the boyfriend look?

  1. Thanks once again Sammy. You have great taste! My just turned 17 yo has always thought that jeans were not for her. We recently discovered Lee Riders last year, and she has them in the skinny mid rise in a very dark Navy colour that she now lives in with flat boots and simple little jumpers and tops. I think she needs to invest in a couple more pairs now in black and a denim colour, not cheap jeans, but great fit and quality. Thanks Sammy.

    1. Wow, your daughter and I sound very similar Jen! I live in all my Lee Rider jeans. Exceptional quality! I have also found Abrand jeans (which I mentioned in the post) are also quite similar in the quality, fit and price! The Universal Store should stock them. – Sammy x

      1. Late I know, but thanks for the great advice Sammy , we are off to the Universal Store at Pac Fair on Saturday! Jen

  2. Love your style Sammy and have been sharing your posts with my 12 yo daughter. She has only just agreed to wear blue denim, after 2 years of black denim and black jeggings only. Sigh. But for me, I love that Country Road knit – beautiful. And the taupe ankle boots. Another great post. Thanks 🙂

  4. thanks for the helpful tips sam! … I like your input!
    love the outfit!
I have all sorts of jeans! I do like skinnies, if they are the right length, but sometimes I have trouble if they are too long around the boot area do I tuck in roll up turn under? … annoying, nuisance factor! … my legs are quite long too! btw I saw a photo of Olivia Palermo … lovely, too perfect! but even she had turned them under so she could have trouble too!?!//
have a good weekend! hope your studies are going well! … love m:)X

    1. Most welcome Merliyn! I’m a long legged girl too, the best kind right?! I have had that problem also, I think it’s just a matter of finding the right pair – Sammy x
