How to wear the Bohemian Traders striped dress

Nikki ParkinsonFashion, How to 41 Comments

One of the top-selling pieces in the Styling You Shop (the autumn-winter capsule is only available for sale until this Saturday, June 6) has been the Bohemian Traders striped dress.

I’m not surprised at all.

It’s a dress that I fell in love with last winter because if ever there was a frock equivalent of a pair of trackies, it’s this one.

I should say fancy trackies as this dress has the capacity to slot into a casual wardrobe but also step up for a dressed up situation.

It’s a dress that suits both my petite AND curvy sisters.

It’s a dress that can be layered or pared back and worn in its glorious simplicity. Simply adjust the look according to the temperature. Boots, vest, tights and coat for cold days; a scarf and sneakers for mild days.

The style is meant to be over-sized but you can control just how over sized it looks on you by buying one or two sizes down. You’ll still achieve the same look but it might feel less overwhelming.

If you’re a fan of a belt, it very much lends itself to wearing one. A “faux” belt will also work – by faux I mean using a shirt and tying it around your waist or hips.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, this is also a style that will work for you. For breastfeeding, simply wear back to front (as Styled By Bec has done below with the short-sleeved version).

Before we see how some of the real women of #everydaystyle wear this dress, I need to talk about the issue of stripes and some people’s aversion to them, thinking that the stripes make them look bigger.

I say poo, poo to that fashion myth/rule. The stripes – particularly these thin ones – can have the opposite effect. Choose stripes because you love them and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Stripes will always be on trend and they always look smart. Embrace.

  1. Thanks so much for the mention Nikki. I’ve been a bit under the radar this week with my blog reading. I do love this dress and the t-shirts too. I wear them at least once a week at home. (not always part of #everydaystyle)

  2. Hi there Nikki, I have the gorgeous grey striped dress and also a green one from a couple of years ago. I just don’t have the legs to wear it as a real dress but LOVE THEM over skinny jeans and leggings with boots. I call them my comfort clothes and always feel comfy and cool too when wearing them. Thank you for the intro to the brand.

  3. I am still breastfeeding so it is cool to see it on backwards. Still looks great. I love this dress. Might have to splurge. It is an investment piece though right haha 🙂

  4. I’ve been umming and aahing over this dress for weeks. I bought the Ahoy summer dress and absolutely lived in it. If I get it, I will need to buy a nice pair of ankle boots hehehe 😀

  6. Nikki I love the look of this dress, and have had my eye on it since it appeared in your store. You have mentioned it would work during pregnancy – I am 16 weeks pregnant and I am unsure of what size to buy. It looks quite generous so perhaps I could get away with my normal size 8?? Any thoughts would be appreciated, cheers!

    1. Hi Carly, congrats on your baby! Yes, it would work for maternity and I would buy your normal size as opposed to down a size like I’m wearing. When it comes to breastfeeding you can wear it with the zip at the front.

  7. And there’s the Europe capsule wardrobe right there, in one dress, thanks to all those great styling options! I was going to pack a plain, almost-navy blue metallicus dress but now I’m thinking stripes…great post Nikki xx

    1. Thanks Julie – not sure when you’re travelling but the the long-sleeve might be too warm for summer in southern Europe. It would be ok in the UK though at the moment!! I’m travelling in a couple of weeks but will stick with short sleeves and a jacket – wishful thinking maybe!

  8. Thanks for featuring me, Nikki! I can definitely vouch for this dress and would wear it every day if it were socially acceptable! The quality is amazing and I don’t even iron after washing. It washes so well too and doesn’t look a day older than when I purchased it. Such a versatile dress and I like it loose and lovely! Thanks for introducing me to this dress. I certainly have got my money’s worth out of it!

  10. I have the short sleeved version, I love it and wear in our minus 5 Canberra mornings with leggings, boots, scarf and a coat. However the neckline sometimes feels a bit ‘chokey’ – does anyone else have this issue? Was thinking of investigating an alteration. Also have the red striped V-neck for summer which is awesome.

  11. I love it, so versatile and chuck-on-able especially on days when you want to feel like it’s all hanging out and comfy but it doesn’t actually look like that if you dress it up with a scarf and a big bag. xxx very good buy

I bought one from your shop for my friend which is lovely too 🙂

  12. I’d love to see a light-weight blazer/jacket in the spring edit…and lighter, brighter spring colours! Also, will you be bringing the stretch cami back for spring? Does it come in white by any chance?

  13. I love this Bohemian Traders dress I might still purchase one,I love how it is styled on all the different women and if it’s as comfy as trackies in a dress version that sounds like a winner to me,great post Nikki Xx

  14. I am a huge fan of this BH striped dress, so much so I’ve got the different versions in different colours! Been wearing them with leggings since we hit winter.
