How to update your wardrobe for winter 2015

I’ve been out twice this week. On school nights.

In the name of fashion research.

I know, I know. It’s a tough job …

The biggest thing I took away from my research in terms of how to update your wardrobe for winter is that the update can be as simple as adding key show-pony pieces in luxe winter fabrics.

Winter is apparently coming. Stop laughing Queenslanders, I know it’s been ridiculously and unseasonably stifling of late but surely summer will get the change-of-seasons memo soon. As for poor old Autumn – she’s seemingly been completely overlooked.

I did get a brief, delicious taste of the change in seasons during last weekend’s Melbourne escape and it gave me the opportunity to relieve my summer wardrobe boredom with some layering.

And after attending the Petrol Boutique autumn-winter showcase on Monday night, my NEED to layer reached fever pitch.

The key to most of the outfits shown – outfits that would work for the every day – was a layering piece in those aforementioned luxe, winter fabrics and textures.

Think capes, gilets, light knits, wool hats and leather (or leather-look) anything.

Be still my winter wardrobe heart.

The following day, I may or may not have taken this inspiration to the extreme. Don’t be fooled by the coolish tones of this photo. It was far from cool. Well, it was cool when I changed while in an air conditioning. Not so cool when I stood outside in 30 degrees. Don’t look too closely … I was perspiring where no women should perspire.

Boho Bird dress | Ministry of Style vest | My Red Lippy wool hat | Frankie4 Footwear boots

Boho Bird dress $119.95 @ Birdsnest* (I’m wearing size 14) | Ministry of Style vest (bought at Petrol Boutique) | My Red Lippy wool hat (bought at Petrol Boutique) | Frankie4 Footwear boots*

I’m working a trifecta of winter luxe show-pieces here. We’ve got wool in the hat, faux fur in the vest (so soft I know I’ll receive strange looks when wearing it as I won’t be able to stop from stroking it!) and oily nubuck in the boots.

Contrast this with a light silk dress and you get the full show-pony effect thanks to the mix of textures.

This is the key to buying pieces for your winter wardrobe update, especially when you live somewhere where the chance of wearing a full coat is something that might happen just two nights each winter.

Look for accessories and shoes with a luxe winter texture. Even trims in any of these textures make for a winter luxe look.

The beauty of cardis, gilets and sleeveless vests is that you can wear even a short sleeve underneath them … upping to a long knit and coat on top when it’s cooler.

Because they are all layering pieces – or statement accessories – they all (examples below) have the capacity to take your winter “wardrobe essentials” outfit to the next level.

They are the pieces that make a winter outfit, bringing the outfit building blocks together to create a seasonal fashion statement.

These are some of my faves from around the stores at the moment:

  1. Had the chance to buy a faux leather skirt yesterday. Passed it up but haven’t stopped thinking about it since. I hope it’s still there when I go back!

  3. My favourite winter items are definitely my Kookai tights, Sensor Blake boots as well as my Witchery cardigans. I can wear them together or mix and match with other items in my wardrobe.

  5. This post just makes me wamt to blow budget and shop haha. I hate being cold so Sydney winter is torture to me, except I LOVE winter fashion.

  6. I love your outfit Nikki. You look so chic! I love to layer and have bought a few vests to see me through winter. I really want to do a complete wardrobe clear out but it’s hard while I’m still slowly losing the baby weight and breast feeding.

  7. This would have to be one of my favourite outfits on you Nikki. I love colour tones, textures and layers it really is gorgeous. I have to say I admire your dedication to fashion to stand outside in the heat we have had in this outfit getting your photo taken. I definitely will be using some of the above info to create interest in my winter outfits.

  8. I have been eyeing the animal print shoes for ages such as the ones you have shown here, with bit of a heel and smart. My problem is I need a comfortable support such as Ziera or Paul Green. Or they will be sitting use shoes only for me. Where can I find these shoes. One would think that such labels Ziera and others would make them. Or am I looking in the wrong places.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
    thank you

  9. I love that your post starts by acknowledging what a treat it is to glam up and go out on a ‘school night’. For most of us, the everyday grind does not allow for such luxuries. Your post gives me a double treat: living vicariously through you (I’ve since checked out Sash Drake’s website and drooled over her fashions) and reassurance my kitchen / laundry / car bound life is the norm.

  10. I saw that cardigan at Big W and I knew you would be all over it Nikki! Love the Frankie boots too. What footwear would you pair with the leather look ponte’s from Target?

  11. Hooray for winter fashion! We’ve had a spell of much cooler weather here in Adelaide this week and it has exposed the major gaps in my wardrobe. Kind of a good thing, kind of a shit thing while desperately trying to get ready for work! Having said that, my Nine West ‘Martina’ leopard print heels will be getting quite the workout this season. And I just can’t seem to get the Witchery ‘Aria’ leopard print ankle boots out of my head either. I sense a (regular) theme happening here…! 😉

  12. Last winter I bought a Mela Purdie animal print knit convertible poncho/button up wrap, that will definitely be a show pony again this winter.

I found that Seed leather skirt on-line last night and had already planned to go for a look see, as I think the back ponte at the back might make it work better on my shape than all-over leather. Will report back!

Would love a new hat, but generally I only seem to work up the courage to wear a beret as opposed to anything stronger in real life, i.e. outside a shop or my bedroom.

    1. Oh that was a very smart buy last year Johanne! I think ponte at the back would be more comfortable on the skirt. I’m sitting in my Sussan leather skirt (new) today and it’s not so good for work!

  13. Love your outfit! I praise you for standing outside in that combo with the weather we’ve had this week, all in the name of fashion! I love the look of that seed skirt, there’s some gorgeous winter pieces in Sass & Bide, leather pants & cashmere jumpers are on my wish list but how often will they get an outing here in Brisbane?!

    1. Five minutes and I was back to regular “loose summer frock in autumn” programming Kel. Oh how I’m lusting over the sass & bide leather jacket … my upcoming Europe trip takes priority though!

  14. you look really “cool” in that outfit nikki!;0 … even though you were melting!
I love that colour on you!
I love a vest! … all of those items are great!
yes I picked up a few items of interest in melbs!;)
aka large wrap! … boots, bag, and pants! … loved it!
    cheers hun! m:)X

  15. You must have read my mind Nikki ,I am going out today to fill some gaps in my wardrobe for autumn/winter it was a cool 11.5 degrees when I got up this morning, sorry for gloating!
I need new black jeans,I’d like a wool mix camel Cape ,I’m good for coats as we found a gorgeous Italian charcoal wool coat that must be vintage in My Mums wardrobe that only fits me,that I have never ever seen before!
I love the hats but I have a really small head so don’t know if I could wear one.
I am really loving dresses with ankle boots, have a great day Nikki and thank you for doing “research” for us and have a lovely weekend Xx

  16. Obs I am way old or a hippy at heart but my daughter has nabbed my felt hats and looks gorgeous and loves to tell everyone they were mine! Hello vintage! I look at her and feel grateful for her effortless style and wonder where did the time?
I adore the black and camel and textured collection above and as Melbs has welcomed autumn, I am going to enjoy wearing black again…though we wear it in summer too!

  18. You are so funny sometimes. The way you deride the weather here in Queensland. I can only imagine how you felt stepping outside in to this week’s heat and humidity in your gorgeous WInter boho outfit : P. Yes, the gillets and wraps look just the ticket for WInter here and Autumn elsewhere. Love your work Nikki.

    1. I think this year it’s just gone on longer Samantha? Not much rain which tends to give us some respite. My health doesn’t do so well in the humidity … re the fashion, I think Petrol Boutique nailed with the types of garments we need for a Queensland winter but yes, things people elsewhere would wear now!

  19. Gosh Nikki, you always look so gorgeous.

I actually don’t mind that Big W jacket for $20, I picked up a similar one from them this time last year and it’s certainly paying for itself.

I’m almost tempted with the ponte leather look leggins but as you know I’m short and bottom thigh heavy and it’s probably not going to end up working for me. Perhaps a plain ponte pant would suit me better?

    1. I’ve got some that are leather at the front and ponte at the back and they work for me as the ponte gives the stretch. Always worth a try and remember it’s what you wear with them. A long white shirt looks great with these style of pant.

  20. There is so much to love about the outfit. My mum used to wear those hats when I was a kid. Clearly, she was ahead of her time. Shame I didn’t save them. I’ll have to re-invest. You look hat-tastic!
