How to use illuminators

A bit like I like to add a little shimmer and shine to my wardrobe, you’ll also find my makeup kit stocked with all manner of products designed to help me get my glow on.

I refuse to subscribe to the theory that as we age we should dim down anything that shimmers.

Poo poo to that.

Instead I have an arsenal of glow-inducing makeup products on hand to give my face a little lift … when my face needs a little lift … which is most days.

In the video below on how to use illuminators I’m sharing six that I currently have on high rotation.

They’re not the only ones I have in my arsenal and I do not wear them all at once but they represent a good cross-section of the types of illuminators available.

How to use illuminators on your face

1. Erin Bigg Cosmetics Mineral Sheer Tint $49: a minerals-based tinted moisturiser that gives you a glow thanks to the tiny, mirror-like qualities of the minerals.

2. Ere Perez Versatile Vanilla Highlighter in Falling Star $31.95: Love that this is in a compact – it’s the perfect highlighter for any areas of the face where light hits. Natural vanilla has been used to create the scent. (not tested on animals and free from parabens, synthetic fragrances and other chemicals)

3. NARS Illuminator in Orgasm $39: Love the texture and colour of this illuminator. It has a cult following for a reason – it gives and instant glow just like the real thing 😉

4. Jane Iredale Golden Shimmer Face and Body Lotion $38.25: This is similar to the NARS Illuminator but has more moisturising properties for the skin so I tend to spread it around a little more. (cruelty-free)

5. YSL Touche Eclat – Radiant Touch $57: Many use this as a concealer … I use it more as a highlighter over and below my regular concealer. It also has a cult following

6. NIVEA Pearly Shine lip balm $3.14 (on sale):  This may be a lip balm but it also doubles as a conveniently packaged, budget-friendly highlighter.

What say you to an illuminator? Are you on board? Do you have a fave? Or – like me – is that like asking you to name your favourite child?

  1. I just started using the Body Shop’s illuminator. It is so lovely mixed with a bit of foundation. I look like I’ve just worked out or something! A+

  2. I have to confess to illuminating just about everyday. Whether it be the Nars illuminater mixed in with BB cream/foundation or patted on key areas as you show in your film. I quite like Benefit liquid formulas or Bobbi Brown as a powder option. Love that you added the Nivea stick in your mix, it’s perfect to pop in a purse!

  3. Love the NARS illuminator. What I lack in shimmer in my wardrobe I make up for in my makeup bag : ). Thanks for the other recommendations especially the Nivea lip balm.

  4. I have a Revlon one – it is ok. I find it quite useful when my skin looks dry/flat to mix it with a bit of foundation too. I also have a Models Prefer Eye Brightener which I love, I think for the money it is brilliant. It is one product that gets used every single day.

  5. I had a session with a Nars make up artist recently and she recommended using the Nars Orgasm Illuminator blended with an eye concealer to brighten the eyes. Similarly depending on your foundation and the look you want, you can blend a little with your foundation to create an all over glow. I wear a matt foundation and find adding it gives the matt a nice warmth – particularly now it’s warming up.

    1. It depends on the level of makeup you want to wear – yes you can wear on their own as a freshen up; under foundation as a brightening/highlighting base; mixed with foundation or tinted moisturiser as an all-over glow; or on top of foundation. I do all of these depending on my mood or where I’m headed on any given day.

  6. I am a big fan of Smashbox’s artificial light and also Michael Kors By Michael Kors leg shine and bonus that it smells the same as the fragrance which is my all time favourite scent,it’s nice on the décolletage.
