How to style jackets for spring

If I had to nominate one clothing piece that offered the most outfit versatility across most of the year, the jacket would win hands down.

Or should that be, arms in?

A jacket has the wardrobe power to change a casual outfit to semi-corporate; a jeans and tee to a night out with the girls; a summer frock to special occasion.

It took me a while to work out the power of the jacket but my personal discovery was borne out of wardrobe necessity.

My work life is mostly of the casual-at-home-variety but frequently I travel for client meetings and events in Sydney or Melbourne.

Short of creating a whole new wardrobe just for those trips, I discovered that by just adding a jacket to my otherwise work-at-home outfits, I would not only look professional but I would feel comfortable in a meeting or networking situation.

The jacket pulled the outfit together as one, lifting it up a notch in the process and (not surprisingly) this lifted my confidence up a notch too.

Now I have a whole section devoted to jackets – mostly lightweight ones. They add interest and complete weekend and work outfits.

It’s lightweight jackets that I’ve mostly invested in. The weight of material is one I can wear most of the year – except for the height of summer when even a small sleeve becomes unbearable in Queensland.

What I’ve also learned since The Great Jacket Discovery is that the best time of year to make those year-round purchases is in spring.

This is when most stores and labels offer the greatest selection for us – and in colours and fabrics that will give your wardrobe a boost now and for many seasons to come.

Style ideas

Once spring turns into summer, jackets will all but disappear from the racks.

In this post, I feature three of my favourite jackets for spring from the current collection at Blue Illusion (the white ponti jacket I featured here and here is also a fave and my leather jacket from winter was also embraced on our trip south last week).

Blue Illusion knows jackets. This French-inspired store knows that the jacket is very much a part of a French woman’s wardrobe – for practicality in cool temperatures and for style.

I love the shape of the denim jacket featured below and the stretch European denim is luxe and soft to wear. I’ve used it to “dress up” a casual striped tee and stretch pant. The overall look is still casual but “put together”.

This statement jacket below has a very French feel about it. The cut, the texture … it all combines for an uber-chic addition to any outfit. It especially works well when contrasted with a pair of jeans. Whenever you create this dressed-up/dressed-down contrast in an outfit, you add interest. This is something French women do very well.

I wrote about the classic style of monochrome here and this outfit below is a fresh take on that idea with the addition of mint. The white denim jacket (in the same shape as the blue denim) provides the finishing touch and structure. This combination is great for weekend brunch with the girls.

Style tips

  1. Start with the basics. I know, I know. I’m always banging on about that aren’t I? With jackets, cover off on the neutrals before being seduced by the colours, patterns and sparkles.
  2. Denim jackets will always be in style. Team with black or simply throw over a spring frock for a casual weekend brunch look.
  3. A white jacket is this season’s hottest jacket buys. Jackets have fabulous wardrobe power as discussed above but when combined with white this spring, your outfit is fresher than fresh.
  4. A coloured or patterned jacket acts like an accessory. I love using jackets this way. My basic outfit of jeans and top or tee is suddenly changed with the addition of a statement jacket – just like if I’d added a necklace or scarf.
  5. Fit is so important. To avoid feeling and looking “boxy” in a jacket, look for fabrics with stretch so the fit comes with great comfort levels. Ensure the size you buy fits you well across the shoulders and at the top of the arms.

Blue Illusion is offering every Styling You reader $25 off their next Blue Illusion purchase.

What say you to the jacket? Have you harnessed the power? Have you embraced the white jacket this season?

  1. It took me until last year to really get the jacket thing, but now I love them. Last year I bought a cropped denim jacket and this year a (not real but looks nice) leather trim biker jacket and I love to wear them both! Warm enough for a Qld winter and I agree, even for a casual dresser like me, a jacket just makes you feel a bit smarter than a cardy or similar. Love the look of white but the grubby factor puts me off..

  2. Love the outfits, Nikki. Huge fan of Blue Illusion here. Will have to pop into their Williamstown store this week and have a look at the new seasons range. x

      1. hmmm not sure on jumpsuits. Being tall, the waist is usually around my boobs and the pants end at my shins or ankles lol

  3. Lovely! I did try their denim one one, after the sales assistant encouraged me into the Rafia one, but the latter suited me better. Haven’t worn it yet , but Im sure I will have it for years 🙂 x

  4. Hip hip hooray! Time to drag my white jacket out of the cupboard. I haven’t worn it for about ten years! And even though they’ve been kewl as bro lately, the kids and peanut butter hands have stopped me.
Love all these jackets. Looking gorgeous! x

  5. Nikki I LOVE the mint pants with monochrome and the geometric jacquard seamed jacket. Thank you SO much for arranging a $25 voucher for this little Blue Illusion junkie x. May I ask you, are they using Juliette Binoche as the model? It certainly looks like her.

  6. I took a cream Metalicus jacket on my last work trip to Asia in July. I loved how smart and versatile it was over the Leona Edmiston frocks and tailored skirts I wear for work presentations on these trips. So much crisper and really more suitable than a black jacket in warmer climates.
It also worked well with more casual outfits when I need something around my shoulders when the air conditioning was set to arctic .
And I can throw it in the washing machine, which is brilliant for anything light.

  7. Yes I have Nikki after seeing you in your white jacket with your jumpsuit on your Model and Me post, I kept my eyes open to see if I could find a nice white jacket and bingo I found one at the beginning of August when Liz Jordan where having a sale it is a beautiful jacket and I agree it amps up every outfit ,from jeans to dresses and thanks to you I have quite a few now from your post a long while ago.I also agree about the denim jacket I have worn mine with dresses a LOT!
Great post Nikki I love those black and white shoes they are gorgeous Xx

  8. I really like that jacquard, so wearable. I bought a denim jacket last month, and have worn it quite a few times already. Love it. Still hunting for a kaftan, all too bright/voluminous/short GAH! But I did get TWO new tankini style swimsuits and a hat! Just have to keep shopping, sigh 😉

  9. love the jacket nikki! … any colour and weight of jacket … I have a shop here! ;0 … learnt many years ago that we were best friends pop a scarf and one is definitely transported! … love the jacquard one I have a similar one! a white jacket is missing … although I have a bomber style one worn once! might get a soft flowing one?? … have a good week nikki! love m:)X

  10. I have a few jackets but I need to invest in a denim one. I really like the style of the denim blue illusion one.

  11. Seed Heritage have just re released their lightweight chambray denim jacket due to popular demand. I finally got my hands on one and it’s going to be so versatile, it’s absolutely gorgeous! Great investment 🙂

  12. Oh the timing of this is perfect! I have been on the lookout for some jackets after recently embracing the blazer! I love love love the geometric one. Off to check it out.
