The Model and Me: Birdsnest boho bird

With conflicting reports (here and here – you be the judge) as to whether Offspring will ever return to our screens, today’s Model and Me is an ode to Nina Proudman … because even if she never returns to our screens, her style will always have a place in my wardrobe.

I’m far from a fully fledged, card-carrying member of the boho luxe style brigade but I do like to embrace elements of it in my mostly smart casual wardrobe.

So when Birdsnest gave me a look at the new season of its boho bird label, I got more than a little excited by one piece in particular.

Now, I know if you love Nina Proudman style then you will love this piece too. You might even already have it … because the first run has already sold out.

The shirt hadn’t sold out when I photographed it and I’ve decided to still run it here today as pre-orders are being taken for when it’s back in stock in November and I don’t want you to miss out if it’s something you can see yourself wearing over and over again.

How beautiful is this shirt/jacket/top? It was love at first sight for me and then when I tried it on and it just worked? Let’s just say, you’re going to be seeing me wear this a lot.

I’ve worn it with the buttons done up but love that you have the option to wear it open too. You don’t need to buy the cami top that matches for underneath but I do think that it works really well as the fabric drapes beautifully underneath.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Nina would wear it with a green cami or tank underneath – and I think you could definitely experiment with different colours.

I’ve added a scarf and shoulder bag (this bag is fabulous for fitting so much in – the internal sections and pockets have made it a great travel accessory for me of late) to ramp up the Nina factor even higher but I think this is a piece that makes enough of a statement on its own.

The jeans are my new faves from NYDJ. It’s a style that’s just landed in Australia but I hope it’s one they keep doing. The skinny cut is amazing … because it is skinny but with a stretch that means you get comfort with style. The rips are there for a bit of an on-trend, distressed look but they’re not so crazy that you worry your thigh is about to pop out at any given moment. The cropped length is ideal for me – makes it full-length (I’m 167cm)!

I bought the Swedish Hasbeens last year from a boutique that sadly closed its doors – I’ve worn them so much and they’ve been comfortable from day one. I know that friends have bought from overseas and I can tell you that the sizing is true to your regular European shoe size.

Is Nina living on in your wardrobe?

PS. I will be tuning in tonight to see Asher Keddie in Party Tricks. You? I’ve been a fan of Asher since Love My Way. I love what she brings to her characters and am hoping to be seduced all over again. I will keep an eye on her character’s style too.

  1. Gorgeous. Not my thing at all, but love it on you! Nina lives in my wardrobe through scarves (never used to wear them at all, now have three or four) and through the fact I’m considering maxi skirts now. Haven’t found the right one yet, but it’s on the list! Waiting for one that screams YES!

  2. Gorgeous styling Nikki {as usual}. Love it all! I think I need a bit of boho in my wardrobe! Absolutley will be watching Party Tricks tonight – love Asher! x

  3. Hi, you look gorgeous in that outfit (as always). I think I want that shirt too! I was wondering how you found the sizing? I see on the birdsnest website most reviews are saying that it comes up large and to go down a size, but we are similar sizes, and I think that looks great on you 🙂

  4. Always a bit of hippy luxe a La Niña in my wardrobe. If I didn’t have to wear corporate clothes for client meetings, it’s what I’d wear even more often.
I do love the layering potential of that lovely shirt.

  5. That shirt looks gorgeous on you Nikki ,I love a bit of boho!
I have heard that offspring isn’t coming back which is a pity 🙁 but I will be watching Asher tonight in here new show I do love her as an actress too.
Thank you I love your model and me Mondays Xx

  6. You look great Nikki. I have been searching for those jeans everywhere. Do you know of any online places that I could find them?
I clicked on the link but it just says there are no stockists in my area (southern highlands nsw). I have had NYDJ before and they are brilliant. Thanks so much

    1. Hi Lisa, David Jones stocks them but I can’t find this style online (the Alina is the closest – … also Zambezee boutique stocks NYDJ … you could contact them to see if they can get this style for you?

nikki, was your most pleasant memory from the trip mrs woogs toilet sojourn?!? … TIME OUT! … with champagne ofcourse … lol … funny how those moments occur!
you never seem to be phased! always smiling … amazing! love it! … <3 m:)X

    1. I’m sure she doesn’t want to do the same roles either – loved Asher in Paper Giants too! Not sure the toilet incident was pleasant but it was hilarious – and compared with the shower screen incident a couple of weeks ago just a walk in the park!
