The Model and Me: Heartfelt Designs

Nikki ParkinsonFashion, The Model and Me 39 Comments

Our trip to the Whitsundays gave me an early taste of the long summer ahead.

The weather was still mild but the days were balmy and warm. We’ve already had some 29 degree days in Brisbane too so I know that the consistently warm weather is just around the corner.

Many people have also been lucky to escape to the beach for the school holidays so in keeping with that theme, I have a few posts this week that will help you get your head around what to pack so that you feel cool, comfortable and sun-safe.

Today’s Model and Me post very much fits in with that idea. I’m featuring a tunic from Sunshine Coast-based label Heartfelt Designs.

Janet – the designer behind the label – says she’d had a 25-year career in retail, working for others, but wanted to create her own dream. I love that.

I also love this from Janet:

I wanted to do more for the “forgotten” woman – she is basically anyone over the age of 40! I love helping women find things that make them feel fabulous.

Snaps to Janet for backing her belief and using a woman over 40 as her model too.

Heartfelt garments are casual, easy-to-wear and flattering. And you don’t need to be beach or poolside to embrace them.

Heartfelt Designs pineapple kurta - shot on location at Qualia Resort, Hamilton Island

Heartfelt Designs Pineapple kurta (I’m wearing XL and am 167cm)* | Freya and Sabine sandals* | Samantha Wills ring | earrings a gift from a girlfriend (bought in Bangalow, NSW) … shot on location at Qualia Resort, Hamilton Island.

If you know me you’ll know that this tunic dress had me at the pineapple print. OF COURSE.

Those who don’t know me … well … I have a thing for pineapples. I’ve tried to analyse why. To me they represent summer fun, childhood visits to The Big Pineapple and feasting on a pineapple sundae.

Anyway, wearing this makes me smile. As does having pineapple decor pieces dotted about my house. That’s enough justification, yes?

I love the green print worked back with a vibrant blue and couldn’t resist going all matchy matchy with these new-season Freya and Sabine Sandals (Freya and Sabine is the sister label of Zoe Kratzmann Footwear – they’re available in boutiques around Australia but also now online).

The a-line shape of the tunic is flattering but in the XL size on me, still loose enough for comfortable wearing when the going gets hot. Underneath I’ve layered a Metalicus slip, as I tend to do with most summer cotton styles (the white isn’t in stock online at the moment but this is the style I have in black and white … might need to snap up these two new blue colours too). They are breathable and also give you shape.

My blogging friend, Vanessa at Style and Shenanigans has also featured this same dress – plus others from Heartfelt Designs – in this post. It will give you a look at another size/shape in the same design.

Stay tuned … this week I’m also sharing styling and shopping tips for kaftans, sun-safe garments for in and out of the water and my travel beauty essentials. It will feel like I’m holidays at the beach … well maybe if I served up a fancy cocktail in a pineapple on the side.

So tell me, are you on holidays? Planning a beach or resort escape this spring/summer?

  1. Nikki…. whether it’s the pool surrounds, or the look of love…you absolutely ROCK that tunic!!! Such a cool comfortable and relaxed look.

  2. Hi Nikki – just wanted to extend a big thank you to you and Vanessea for modelling the Pineapple Kurta so beautifully – also to all your lovely followers for their inspiring comments! I hope I have found a new bunch of dedicated followers of Heartfelt! I must add that if the Kurta is too loud for some – there is the very cute Pin-Tuck shirt in a mini green pineapple print! Go Queensland! xx j

  3. We all have our little motifs don’t we? For me it’s stars- can’t resist anything with stars on it.
Having just returned from a trip to Saffire in Tasmania there are no beach or resort trips planned. However I have a trip to Singapore and Bangkok for work in November, so I usually try to fit in a weekend by the pool.
A kaftan does double duty as a popover at a city hotel pool or worn with pants for casual client entertaining,so totally justified in packing one or two.

    1. I love a heart too … and I’ll admit stars and spots do creep into my wardrobe 😉
Oh your Saffire trip sounds amazing as does your ability to find an upside to a work trip. I so agree about a kaftan doing double duty too!

  4. I love that this designer thinks about women over 40 and uses older models ,big kudos to her we have more money and will buy what we love more than younger women!
I love this on you Nikki, when I saw your everyday style post I thought ooh I love that tunic and I’m in lust with with shoes as well.I don’t have any beach holidays planned but having a lovely pool in the yard I often play “resorts” in summer as you know. Thanks for sharing this brand Nikki I’m going to have a look X

  5. Gorgeous Nikki. So summery! Much nicer without the pants too. Perth has gone back to winter after a blast of heat on Saturday … but looking at you reminds me of those lovely summer days. I’m pelican obsessed – for me they are summer – but designers don’t make too much pelican pattern! x

  6. Yep, those Big Pineapple sundaes in the “old days” were the best! Loving the tunic – and love that Janet had a fabulously fun goal and achieved it!

  7. a versatile piece of summery kit nikki!

  8. Love this pineapple tunic – it is so you – and I may have mentioned that when Janet first showed me the catalogue! Love that you love pineapples and I too have fond memories of The Big Pineapple, having most recently visited in 2009! Thank you so much for the shout out too! x

  9. I landed in Noosa yesterday Nikki, and during a Hastings St stroll I saw this tunic. I actually thought of you immediately. Seems you have imprinted us all with your pineapple love 😉

  10. When I saw Vanessa model this tunic I thought of you because of the pineapple print! I love the look on both of you and as a 30year old I would wear this too. Love the print and A line always suits my figure. Looking forward to reading your blogpost series this week. Nikki also how was your night after that terrible scare with the shower screen? X I also should mention I have fond memories of The Big Pineapple too. Loved their Sundaes and the gift shop was amazing to me as a child. 🙂
