The Model and Me: Boho Bird

My love for – and embracing of –  the boho style is something that has evolved since I started my own business and swapped a corporate-y wardrobe for a more casual one.

Oh, and our fictitious friend Nina Proudman may have had something to do with me falling even more of a little more of this whimsical style.

Australian online retail success story, Birdsnest, realised that it’s not just me who’s keen to unleash their inner boho chic.

Following the success of the launch of its first in-house label, That Bird The Label, last spring, Birdnest has added Boho Bird to its stable. Or should I say nest.

What Birdsnest says: This bohemian-inspired range is a meeting of feminine, whimsical pieces that are as practical as they are beautiful.

What I say: Show me more.

This first collection includes 35 pieces – pieces that will take you from autumn through to the coolest months of winter. That’s the beauty of boho – layering just enhances the total look.

You can check out the collection here. The final pieces in the autumn-winter collection will arrive by May.

I’m featuring one of the dresses in the collection because for a Queensland girl a dress like this will get a lot of wear between now and September.

And me

Boho Bird Morocco shift dress | Ruby Olive bangles | Zoe Kratzmann boots

Boho Bird Morocco shift dress* (I’m wearing size 14) | Ruby Olive bangles | Zoe Kratzmann Rider boots (last season but this season’s colours in the same style are here)

I love so much about this dress. It’s incredibly easy to wear. I love the feel of rayon, the way it falls and how soft it is.

This piece also includes a viscose slip – I’m always adding a slip under anything to prevent any possibilities of indecent exposure of a grown woman, so having one come with the garment is a bonus.

I’ve kept my accessories in this outfit to a minimum. The embroidery in this piece is a statement in itself and the boots provide another focal point. Adding in a couple of bangles that pick up the colours in the boots and dress is enough for me.

When it cools down, I’ll add black tights, a scarf and wear with black ankle or knee-high boots and a Metalicus wool trench coat – a wardrobe stalwart I’ve had for a few years now.

Black and white not your thing? There’s a beautiful sandstone colour way available too.

What say you to a little boho? Yes or no? And are you a Birdsnest shopper?

  1. Ohh! That dress is gorgeous, and I’m not usually a fan of shift dresses, but golly do I want! I ordered from Birdsnest for the first time the other day, I love how wonderfully presented and packaged everything is!

  2. You do look great in that dress Nikki – I love black and white – and the bangles are cool with it! You’re right that this dress/style will carry us Queenslanders through our “winter”!

  3. Gorgeous dress and I love the Sandstone colour too but it would wash me out. I bought my two Metalicus dresses from Birdsnest and I was so impressed with the service. Online shopping is such a great option when you’re a mum!

  4. I like the boho look but it doesn’t suit me. You look great but… I am going to be in the minority here and say I prefer you in lighter colours. I liked the other sandstone colour of the dress. Sorry!! (waiting for everyone to throw things at me!) The last couple of Model & Me outfits have been darker in colour-maybe I am just used to seeing you rock summer in fun, bright colours?

    1. I think it’s good to recognise if a look does or doesn’t suit you Lisa. The other colour is beautiful but it potentially would wash me out tone wise – I love wearing black because of the contrast with my hair – and yes, there are some brights in my winter wardrobe but also a lot of greys, blacks and charcoals. I usually then use accessories to brighten.

  5. I am not a boho chick at all – I tried the style a few years ago & just felt like it didn’t suit me or my personality.

I AM a Birds Nest girl & just received my order of the Adele A-line skirt Elephants on Parade & I simply adore it! It might have something to do with being obsessed with Elephants but the fabric, the shape, everything is right with this skirt.

  6. I’m a huge fan of the boho look…Miss Nikki you look Ab Fab in this dress…it’s especially flattering as it’s feminine and pretty..
Love luv lurve this sorta ethnic inspired dress that be worn dressed up or down, summer and winter. Perfect for Australia!! Thanks Nikki.;-)

  7. Love this dress! I have never purchased anything from Birdsnest…but… being stuck at home off my feet might be the PERFECT time to start!

  8. Love this. I want one although i can’t decide between the two colours!! I have shopped on Birdsnest a lot. Their customer service is fantastic. I am a very happy Birdnest customer.

  9. Thumbs up here too. Love the length, shape and the prettiness added by the embroidery. I also like that the sleeves are loose but not too wide to fit under many jackets which can sometimes be limiting. I bought a plain (loose) black shift from Seed last winter. I’d always bought fitted shift styles before, so this was my first foray into the looser, skimming style. So comfortable and versatile! I’m now a convert to this style. Birdsnest are great; their customer service is second to none!

  10. Yes I love a little bit of boho and do love birdsnest as well i love their styling guides.I really love this dress on you Nikki it could be worn so many ways…beautiful!

  11. Love the dress, you always look better than the model! The boho style suits our Queensland climate, and done well I love the feminine look. I have used Birdsnest quite a few times, they have fantastic customer service, never a problem with returns/exchanges. Definitely a fan of Birdsnest and boho style!
