Hair, beauty and spa directory

I’m heading to the Gold Coast today for the Problogger Conference. Not only am I excited that finally we have a blogging conference being hosted in my home state but also that the conference is being held in a hotel with a fabulous spa.

Regular readers here will not be surprised to learn that I’ve already booked into said fabulous spa. In fact I booked that appointment months ago at the same time as we sorted accommodation.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I am a Spa Rat. Oh yes, I am.

Now a spa visit is a mandatory treat for me – usually tied into a holiday or weekend away – but in between I go to a number of regular salons for everything from spray tans to pedicures and keeping my hair a “natural” shade of blonde.

I’m going to share my beauty and spa list below but the point of this post is to get all of your lists.

I want to know all your salon secrets. I want to know the places you recommend when someone asks for a hair or beauty – or holiday spa – referral.

Like the Shopping Directory we created with your help, we’re doing the same with all things beauty. It will be a resource for everyone here on the blog but will also be adapted for inclusion in my book.

The aim is to help people find the best salons and spas wherever they live around Australia – or the world. This will help other readers when they’re on holiday or if they’re moving to a new area.

Are you ready?

  1. R20 Technique, what is that? A tattoo gun may be able to inject up to 3000 micro bubbles of ink per minute into your skin. When you no longer want your tattoo, it becomes a journey for both the clinician and the client to ascertain the easiest and fastest method of removing what the tattooist injected.

Amount of Inks, depth of inks, tattoo complexity, ink quality, skin health and general health are amongst the many issues we take in consideration for tattoo removals.

The R20 Technique involves passing the laser across the tattoo up to 4 times (ie 4 treatments) during one session. There are conditions that may govern whether a client is suitable of course.

The cost is more for sure! But guess what? The ink release is 50% or even greater than with a single pass treatment. Its extraordinary, and its important that clients know that they can have this treatment.

Medilase R20 Laser Tattoo Removals Brisbane is one of the very very few clinics providing this treatment.

We have full information on our site, please go have an informative read.

    Ink can be moved!

We can be found on or Call our information and Helpline on 0426 444 556

  2. Tattoo Removals Brisbane? Medilase R20 Laser Tattoo Removal Brisbane, Health QLD Registrations, FDA & TGA Registered Lasers, Laser Safety Certificates, INSTANT QUOTATIONS via Texts, 24 Hour Postcare Helpline, and Massive Discounts for R20 Laser Tattoo removals. Medilase Mob: 0426 444 556

  3. Love your blog 🙂

It’s a hidden gem but in Stones Corner Brisbane is fantastic is you are after an intimate experience and feel like you are really being listened to. Owner operated so you get the same hairdressers every time and Kelly’s staff are also fantastic. Thank you for being able to share this here.

  4. All for Sydney

Hair: Adam from Zalm Hair in Beecroft is a GENIUS with curly hair.

Eyebrows: Benefit Brow Bar in Myer, Sydney

Facials: I love Endota Day Spa in Turramurra for a Dermalogica facial, or Urban Spa in Wahroonga have great natural products made in Australia.

  5. My recommendations for Victoria (Melbourne)

Hair: Kenny and the Sunshine Girls, Errol Street, North Melbourne. Fantastic cut and colouring. Beautiful salon, friendly staff with a friendly budgie. I’ve been so happy with my hair from them

Eyebrows: Benefit Brow Bar, Myer Melbourne

Mani/Pedis: Tips & Toes, Victoria Street, North Melbourne. Cheap and cheerful

Massage: Endota Spa, Flinders Lane, City. The best massages I have ever had. The products they use leave you smelling amazing for the rest of the day and it very peaceful and relaxing.

Take off skin and body Peel Street, North Melbourne are a good all-round beauty salon offering nails, waxing, treatments etc

  6. For hair, I love Ursin DK salon in Coolum. They use organic products so there’s no nasty ammonia in the colours. I’ve been going to the lovely Robbie there for 3 years. And don’t be worried about it being too expensive because it’s organic. It costs me less there than the previous salon (not organic) I was going to. Bonus – they have a small selection of clothes, shoes, handbags and jewellery! What more could a girl want!

  8. Northern Beaches, Sydney
I’m a hopeless, lazy, hairy neanderthal when it comes to beauty – quick shave of the legs before the beach and hope for the best! And I get my hair done by a friend who works from home. However, I do have to keep my errant mono-brow under control, have been gifted with the odd facial and have the occasional massage so here goes . . .
Eyebrows & facials – Ella Bache Dee Why (heavenly products) –
Massage – Aroma Ki Collaroy (fabulous hot stone massage and they even have a couples room!) –

  9. Hi Nikki,
I can only recommend a hair salon – I haven’t had a chance to do much of the other stuff for ages! Headhunters in Bondi Junction in Sydney are the absolute best place to go for curly haired girls, or for any sort of hair issues, dry, overprocessed hair, correcting a bad haircut, etc. It is an alternative sort of place, totally relaxing, and not your average hair salon. I’ve been going for 13 years and won’t let anyone else cut my hair – Elizabeth is truly amazing. Great idea with the directory, good luck!

  10. I hope it’s alright to recommend ourselves, The Foundation, for makeup in Brisbane! When our clients ask here’s what we recommend for beauty treatments…. BrowZing Salon in Bulimba for the brows, the girls there are the best in Brisbane. King’s Beauty in Paddington for waxing and facials, we’ve been going there for years. And for the most incredible pedi ever the Thai Foot Spa on James Street is a must!

  11. As a Perth girl I took ages to find somewhere I liked that didn’t charge through the roof! For waxing, facials etc I use Your Essential Beauty and Massage on Beaufort St in Inglewood, and recently I had my makeup done at the Bobbi Brown Counter in David Jones in the City by the account holder there and it was amazing! The service, how she did it (I had a ball to attend), I loved every moment. Finally I have also just entered into the realm of Spray Tans and I follow Aussie Bombshells on FB and I have attended their training days (get a free tan!) or just asked for someone close to my house and she does it for $25 from home! Love it! Again only takes 2 hours to wash off. Pierrot’s hair salon on Beaufort st is also great – have been going there with Mum for over 10 years.

Also Nikki, for the style directory – Windows Boutique in Vic Park is great for girls wanting true service as is Look Feel Be in Maylands. Both great for ages 20-older and all stock up to about a 20. Love them both, small boutiques is the way to go. Department on Beaufort St is also fab!

    Hope this helps!

  12. After 4 years living in perth and trying countless hair salons, I have finally found the most amazing place…… Spoilt in Wembley, Elsa and her team and friendly, fun, welcoming and every haircut with Elsa has been perfect. They also do a blog with hair tips and have hair and makeup school occassioally in the evenings where you can learn from professionals whilst sipping bubbly for no charge at all! I had my wedding hair and ,makeup done here also and they were brilliant.

  13. Definitely agree about SpaQ at QT Sydney. A heavenly place where the therapist sits and chats about problems first then works a routine. I had a divine facial with a head and shoulder massage. Just so worked. Afterwards I tried spa’s funky sauna thing. It had the usual seats and blast of warm air but boasted a shower that let down a wonderful mist of cold water. I’m sure I didn’t use it right, but I had fun!

  14. In Wellington, NZ
East Day Spa is fabulous – I have been there for a hen party and also used to go regularly for eyebrow threading. Feels like a luxurious treat. They have branches in Auckland and Bali too.
Hair – Trois on Allen – Tau has done my hair there for years and does a great job at keeping my hair it’s shade of natural blonde 🙂 Someone even remarked that it was nice my dd and I had the same colour hair. I didn’t feel I could mention that I am a natural brunette :))
Local to me, Tina does my brows and lashes at Hair Designer Studio in Island Bay. She is very sweet and reasonably priced.

  15. This is where I go here in Ipswich, Qld:

Hair: Ab Fab Hair Design, Cnr Brisbane & East Sts, Ipswich (07) 3812 0774

Facials, nails and waxing: Body Bare Beauty, Cnr Brisbane & East Sts, Ipswich (same building) (07) 3281 8685. They also do spray tans.
These salons are located together in the same complex so you can book in to get services done at the same time (i.e. waxing while waiting for your colour to develop). The girls at both places are super friendly and do a great job.
I have many friends that travel out to Ipswich to come to visit these two salons!

  16. For Hair. I travel to Brisbane. Sublime at New Farm. They call it a “Sublime experience”. And from the warm friendly greeting to the offer of refreshments ( bubbles, wine, or freshly brewed coffee and juices). Then the pressure point massage after my consult. You are truly drawn to a different plateau. The stylists all experience ongoing training and are often presenting at hair expo or fashion week. I bounce out of there in a timely fashion feeling renewed and refreshed with amazing hair. They use L’oreal professional and Kevin Murphy (well that’s all I know of). I am asked often ” who does your hair?” And people are disappointed when I say it is a Brisbane salon. But for me, it is worth the commute.

  17. Milan, Italy.
There are sooo many hairdressers in Milan and they are much cheaper than at home. I recommend treating yourself if you’re traveling in Italy. A shampoo and blowdry, ‘peiga’ can range from 7Euros ($10) to about 22Euros ($30) and I haven’t had a bad one yet. No wonder the Milanese women always look so good!

  18. Beauty: Waxing, Facial, Mani, Pedi, IPL : Sharon at Riverside Beauty, Thomas St, Noosa
Hair: Maria at Suite Three, Buderim
    Massage: Melyn mobile 0409652556
    Reflexology: Rossie at Suite Three

  19. What a great idea Nikki. Can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with. Heres my short list.
Hair: Prema Salon Surry Hills and Renya Xydis Sydney
    Eyebrows: Amy Jean Eye Couture
    Spray tans: Wye Cosmetics Norwest
Facials: Faceplus at Medispa Bondi Junction
Professional makeup: Nico Harry Event Makeup 0400216148 (That’s me sorry for the plug. Website to come. I’m good 🙂

  20. Aaaaaand here we go: (shall mix it up with location, I call Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Hervey Bay home at various times of the year)

Hair: Elenbi Salons in either Buderim or Sunshine Plaza – Kia at Buderim does the best blonde!

Eyebrows: Jo at Bare, Brown and Beautiful on Brisbane Road, Mooloolaba. She knows my brows so well, and does my eyelash extensions too.

Spray tans: I don’t get spray tanned at all – I like the real deal (sunbathing on Alex Beach!)

Mani/Pedis: Portia’s in Hervey Bay do the greatest Shellac manis and pedis, and the girls are all lovely

Facials: I have really enjoyed facials from Lime in Cotton Tree

Massage: I rarely get massages, but when I do, I like Soothing Effects in Mooloolaba

Professional makeup: I have two go-to makeup artists

    ColorPop on Aerodrome Road, Maroochydore

    Erin Bigg, Brisbane

Cosmetic treatments – don’t really get them

Spa visits: Peppers Port Douglas Exclusive Spa is my number 1!

  21. I’m in Adelaide, and here are a few places I think do a really great job:

For hair, waxing, massage and facials – Sass and Beau, on William St in Norwood.

Also for waxing, massage and facials – Pure, the Essence of Nature, in the Metro, Unley Road, Hyde Park.

Fantastic people run both places and create a gorgeous and unique atmosphere.

  22. Hair: EmmaDean Salon, Balmain, Sydney ( I’ve been going to Emma since I first tracked her down to do my wedding and have converted many of my friends to her. She’s the go-to for all my friends for formal/wedding hair as well as cut & colour. I love the colour she does in my hair.

Eyebrows, Spray Tans & Facials: A Lotus Care, Hornsby, Sydney. I see either Sirong or Dani and adore them so much.

Professional makeup: Back to Emma! I wouldn’t trust anyone else.

  23. Have a lovely time Nikki, and enjoy those Spa treatments.I enjoy Spa treatments too,I would go every week if i could.
Here is my list Hair.Inspire Hair Salon Claremont Meadows NSW they just changed to Redken products with no ammonia so very gentle and safe for allergies.Nails,mani/pedis, Spring Nails Erskine Park NSW.
Facials and brows ,spray tans waxing and body treatments ,they also do makeup as well, they use Dermalogica and Organic Skincare,I like Dermalogica products for my skin and their facials are divine! Cosmetic Beauty and Laser I go to the St Clair Salon and for bigger things like massages etc I go to Ella Rouge in Penrith.Great idea this directory!

  24. For hair Universal Hair salons in Buderim ( For beauty Ashore beauty located in the Universal buderim salon. Amanda is amazing with eyebrows. Agree pru great for makeup and coastal plastic surgery for peels.

  25. I have had great facials and massages and day spa like packages at Beauty InStyle ( at Wynnum, Brisbane. It is in a small shopping centre so it is a bit of a surprise! The Harbour Day Spa ( at Broadbeach, Gold Coast is an amazing day spa experience especially with friends. Finally Delights at Manly, Brisbane ( is great for eyebrows, facials and cosmetic treatments. It seems I am a bit familiar with some of these things too!

    1. Forgot the spray tan – it must have slipped my mind because I haven’t had one in a while – Epatante Tanning Studio, 124 Florence Street, Wynnum. No website for this one. I don’t mean to take over but I do love sharing a good local business.

  26. Hi, I am in Adelaide and am pretty low maintenance but have been going to Surreal at 267 Kensington Road, Kensington Park for my hair for about 10 years. They are fantastic.

  27. Canberra
Hair – Axis Hairdressing, now in 131/24 Lonsdale St, Braddon. They’ve just moved from the old salon and the new one looks amazing! I think I’ve been going for close to 20 years and not a single bad or even indifferent experience.

    1. I’m aware that Zoe did this Dana. This has actually been in the pipeline here since before that post – way back when I was doing my book proposal, actually. Also, my readership demographic is very much different from Zoe’s – so I need a resource here for my readers to access – just like the Shopping Directory we created.

  28. I live in a regional city so the options are pretty limited for recommendation, however I do have to say that when Endota Spa decided to open up here I was beyond estatic… having frequented the Endota Spa in Port Melbourne and Richmond in my city-gal days, it was awesome to have a local beauty option that I knew would be a no-risk, fabulous experience. There are some great little independent salons here, but for the purposes of a directory, I like that Endota Spas deliver a consistent service so you know that wherever you go across the country, you’ll get a quality treatment everytime… So on that note, this post has reminded me that I really need to use a massage voucher I got for my birthday! Must get onto that 🙂
