I have lived by the beach for half my life.
When I arrived at the Coast in my early adult years, the surf and beach culture of the ’90s was very much alive and well.
Those who embraced the culture were known as skegs. I had completely forgotten this terminology until discussing the makeup look for the Watson X Watson show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia* with Maybelline NY makeup director Nigel Stanislaus.
Nigel likes to share new words with me so I’m sure he’ll appreciate me returning the favour and will add this one to his lexicon.
For the makeup look, Nigel combined “shredded” nails, a strong brow and a matte pink lip for a NYC edge merged with an “essence of ’90s surf cool”.
For me it was a big, big nostalgia trip back to a time when I really wanted to be a skeg.
The problem was, I am not a bronzed babe. I’m a peaches and cream babe.
And I did not even own bronzing powder, let alone know how to use it or where to apply it.

Catwalk to sidewalk tip
This simple way of working out where to apply bronzer is brilliant in its execution. It is also a very handy use of the usually dreadful lighting found in our home bathrooms (or maybe that’s just my bathroom?).
Here’s what Nigel suggests we do:
Tilt your head back 45 degrees. Where the unnatural light hits your face is where you should dust bronzing powder (choose a shade to suit your skin tone). Typically this will be the tops of the cheekbones, tip of the nose, centre of forehead and chin.

This collection is a mix of subtle structure and loose layering in garments that are made for dressing up or dressing down.
I wouldn’t call it surf – or skeg – wear as I know and remember it but this style would suit a relaxed urban beachside location like Bondi in Sydney.

Might be the wrong colour for you Lisa – this happened to me too and I hardly ever wore it. Then I found a bronzer that was a bit warmer, and I wear it everyday now, and it transforms my face!

It’s Hourglass Illume in bronze light. Not cheap at $60, however it has a bronzer and highlighter so I think it’s good value. It was the colour that won me over. Very lovely to use too. I get it from Mecca Cosmetica, they’re also online.
