How to create an aggressive lash

There’s been a minimalist trend towards makeup at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2013* where, gosh, horror, models either hit the runway without any mascara on … or just a little near the eye line.

I know, it scares me too.

While I may not whip up a smokey eye every day, I most certainly do add a lick of mascara to my lashes. Rarely leaving home without.

So, I breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of the strong mascara eye look last night at the Emma Mulholland show.

Yes, it was over-the-top-theatrical but with a little bit of adaptation I found out that this is a look we can all try at home. It’s all in the application … and the mascara brush and formulation you use.

How to create an aggressive lash

Maybelline NY makeup director Nigel Stanislaus is a fan of the aggressive lash. How to create an aggressive lash He first introduced me to it at the Ksubi show at MBFWA last year.

Yes, it’s theatrical but if you’re doing a smokey eye at home, then the technique is worth nailing as it will make those eyes pop.

The best way to quickly get this look is to use Maybelline NY Volum’ Express The Colossal Cat Eyes because the magic is in the brush. It’s got a curved brush that grabs every lash and lengthens them out. It does the work for you. Add at least two layers of mascara, letting dry between each.

The fashion

Two girls behind me in the queue for a cab after the Emma Mulholland show had travelled from Queensland to see the show. They missed out on getting in as it was over-allocated.

Such is the growing cult following for this youth streetwear label.

The designer is ex-Romance Was Born and Ksubi and this was her first show at MBFWA.

She looked to ski clothes from the ’80s for inspiration and having been an owner of  ’80s ski clothes I can vouch that she was spot on with the colours and splashes of neon. Can’t say I went skiing in sequins or a shark-fin backpack though 😉

As for the aggressive lash? It was definitely the ideal runway partner, giving the overall look a nod to early ’90s grunge.
