Shopping confessions: Miu Miu sunglasses

Shopping confessions: the Rodeo Drive edition

Nikki ParkinsonFashion 37 Comments

What a difference a week makes, Stylers?

Just over a week ago I was popping into Rodeo Drive for a quick shop. As you do.

Today, I think I can say I’ve finally kicked my jetlag in the butt. Maybe.

Now, about that sneaky Rodeo Drive shopping excursion.

Shopping Confessions: Rodeo Drive

Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills

I just had to do it, didn’t I?

Pretty Woman is one of my all-time favourite movies.

There I was smack bang in the street where I watched Julia Roberts on the big screen trying to enjoy a shopping spree when the snooty sales assistants told her that there was nothing available for her in their store.

She walks out, only to return the next day, laden with bags and boxes and lays the now-classic line on the gaggle of sales assistants: Big mistake. BIG mistake.

Anyway, I may not have had the thigh-high boots and denim skirt on but I was in jeans and a tee so I thought I’d try my hardest to recreate. In I walked to Miu Miu.

Usually I’m WAY too intimidated to walking into fancy schmancy stores. Way too intimidated.

But guess what? There was no looking of me up and down. No frowning at my seven-year-old as he made a beeline for the sofa.

No, it was all “can I help you?”.

And I thought, yes you can.

“I’ve had my eyes on a certain style of your sunglasses and I think if I was ever going to buy a pair, it would be right here, right now,” I told the lovely sales assistant.

So I did.

You don’t go up to a checkout either. You wait on that sofa while they bring you the bill in a folder like you are in a restaurant. They hand you this with your bagged purchase and for a moment you think you are that girl – any girl – from the movies …

And then the spell is broken as it’s time to get back on that damn tour bus.

But you have that bag and those sunnies and every time you wear them you will think of that moment … and it will make you smile a smile almost as wide as Julia Roberts’.

Shopping confessions: Miu Miu sunglasses

Miu Miu Noir sunglasses … kind of like Dorothy’s red sparkly shoes but for your eyes.

Shopping confessions: Miu Miu sunglasses

Yes … I LOVE them.

I know these sunglasses are not the only thing I purchased while in the US but they were the most expensive.

So, in the spirit of these regular shopping confessions posts, I thought I’d confess my extravagance in an understanding space 😉

Now, it’s over to you. The Styling You Shopping Confessional is now open.

What have you bought lately? Did you snare a bargain or treat yourself to something OTT like I did?

PS. I’d love to give a big bloggie shout out to the bloggers who guest posted for me last week. Please go check our their blogs. They are all awesome, amazing women and they helped me to transition back to regular programming more than they will ever no.

  1. Thanks for the ‘bloggie shout out’, Nikki! It was a pleasure to guest post for Styling You 🙂 And your readers are lovely x Their comments made me feel 10 years younger! Your latest post about THOSE sunglasses made me chuckle as I remembered the scenes from Pretty Woman (such a feel good movie) but I’m glad that your experience was so different. Love the sunglasses on you … they were well worth whatever you had to dish out for them. My most recent extravagance was on a dress in the UK, a slimming, peachy, ankle length affair that just shrieked “BUY ME!” And I did, without any begging. Imagine my delight when the sales person told me that it was newly discounted and actually twenty pounds less than on the ticket! Result!

  2. Love your sunnies…I really need to get new contact lenses…I have some lovely sunglasses but never wear them as my last brand of contact lenses stopped working for me. I forget how much sunglasses can transform an outfit (love your new Prada ones too).
I am ‘meant’ to be not shopping…am on a saving plan BUT I had to buy this http://www.sambag.com.au/maddie-black-3-4-slv-ikat-tunic a V-neck ikat print kaftan, with 3/4 length sleeves. I saw it online and kept looking at it day after day stying it in my mind….it is completely versatile and so ME. I have worn it twice since its arival 4 days ago. Once with opaque stockings and boots and once with ballet flats and a red bag.
I had NEVER bought a tunic before following you Nikki, I was always a fitted waist kind of girl but after 2 kids I find a tunic can be a little more forgiving! I have 3 that I adore and wear regurlarly now -Thanks 🙂

  3. I innocently went out shopping for a present for a 5 year-old and came home with new sunnies (not a special as your ones Nikki!) an Anna Black porcelain necklace (love at first sight) and a Feathers ‘tie back’ anorak (quite a splurge!!). And here ends my confession…

  4. Love the sunnies Nikki. I’ve just returned from 5 days in Hong Kong and kept a look out for Mui Mui copy sunglasses (with no success). I stocked up on cosmetics and make up. Bobbi Brown cosmetics are close to half the price there. I bought the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner for around $26.00 (retails in Aus for $45.00), the Bobbi Brown Ultrafine Eyeliner Brush (similar price) and the new BB cream for around $45 ($60.00 in Aus). Feeling rather special!

  5. Love the sunnies! Ok so I splurged on a Leona Edmiston dress from the Frocks range – it was $600 originally but I ‘scored’ it for $250! That’s a splurge still I realise, but it’s a classic timeless piece and will see me through many weddings, dinners and events. so really it’s a bargain when you do the cost per wear ratio 😉

  6. Love the glasses Nikki. My latest splurge – a white silky flowy top from Forever New (which I thought was a store for my 13 daughter only – turns out not!) to wear on our upcoming holiday to the Gold Coast….warm weather here we come….

    1. Forever New has some terrific stuff. I bought an animal print coat this seas for around $120.00. I wore it to death during winter!

  7. Hmmm…I think I really need to do this. I do lots of window shopping but can’t quite justify the purchase! My biggest splurge lately was on a personalised pendant with my kids names stamped on it – dont’ tell people I paid $260 for it. Although this was a bargain considered I originally was going to buy the $1000 one!

  8. I had a similar experience in Rodeo Drive when my husband took me into Tiffanys and purchased me a couple of their fabulous key pendents. Then I could walk around carrying my little Tiffanys bag feeling very pretty woman and very spoilt!

  9. I bought some turquoise skinny jeans from Seed. Capris, which are full length on my short frame, saved the cost of alterations, so a complete bargain. I have shopped for tops to go with them and now have plenty in pastels and brights. Might get accused of being mutton in lamb’s clothing, but I have the legs to wear skinny jeans and as long as I keep tops longer I think that’s just fine. I went to Big W looking for the new Michelle Bridges workout wear. My size was sold out, so bought a nice Emerson navy knit instead. And two bright tanks to go under a lightweight multicoloured jacket. Need shoes…… maybe tomorrow!

  10. Ok, I did buy one splurge item two weeks ago…but I consider it a worth-it splurge item because it’s well, a resale item, so I guess I did sort of save from having to buy it when it was new. 😉 I bought a Narcisco Rodriguez leather jacket. Would have cost me about $4k if I bought it new, but paid about 10% of that for a smashing price of $480. Still…a splurge for me though. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! 🙂

  11. I am glad your finally over your jet lag Nikki,I love your new “Dorothy”Miu Miu sunny’s they are gorgeous ,I love the movie Pretty woman too!I have been pretty good I have had Mum’s 70th birthday so had to spend a big chunk of money on her pressie,my sister and I got her a lovely gold bangle, which she say’s she loves,I have bought for me a Zara blazer from eBay Hong Kong and it was a bargain just under $18 and it is very similar to your seed one,it’s a turquoise sort of colour and goes with pastels and brights,I’m very happy about that,a colourful striped 3/4 tee to go with all my jeans, and it goes with every pair ,a a bright coral and other colours striped knit top to go with jeans and a jacket and new scarf with orange and navy to go with my navy and white top and a coral blazer to go with jeans ,but I have been good ,I am making sure everything I buy goes with something in my wardrobe,I am on the hunt for a pair of nude or neutral wedges that are not too high ,everything is so high at the moment, so still looking for those!!

    1. Oh Lisa … you’ve scored very well – what a bargain on that jacket and your mum’s birthday pressie sounds beautiful. Keep a look out for those wedges – more styles will land in store in September for sure.

  12. I do have shopping confessions to makes…

I brought a black wrap jacket from https://www.witjuti.com/ which is so lovely and soft, a tunic top that I had been lusting after from Verily, plus two swing jackets, a new jag bag, new black leather boots, and a whole lot of new tops and scarf from the Emerson range at Big W.

Nothing quite as extravagant as your sunnies Nikki, which as just divine by the way!

I have to stop looking in the shops now, and start shopping in my wardrobe.

  13. awesome sunnies! I like the pink noir ones too…my recent purchase was a pair of Nine west sequin ballet flats. They were definitely a bargain, $49.95 marked down from $99.95 and THEN 20% off…so in the end they were $39.95 score!

  14. OOOh I looove them too! fantastic buy. Ha my husband had the right idea when he only allowed a drive through Rodeo Drive after dark! – it was after being at Universal Studios and that shopping mall rigght next to it. I would have bought up in the Lladro shop!
My latest purchases have been 2 new Bulls! Plus plants for the garden. 10 new fruit trees and about 20 punnets of seedlings, then about 25 bags of sugar cane mulch to put around them. Plus multiple packets of Nurofen for the aching back!!!! But you probably want to know the fashion items, ah the latest would be a Red Phoenix Emporium Necklace from the new collection. I already have quite a few of their gorgeous necklaes, but couldn’t resist this one with some gold!
