Keeping it Real: the birthday lunch outfit

Keeping it real: the birthday lunch outfit

My beautiful, cheeky, smart and youngest baby turned seven on Saturday.

This meant a number of big things:

  • He woke up to a mountain of travel-inspired pressies including some US dollars to spend while we’re away.
  • He spent most of the weekend building the rest of his presents. Yes, our Lego collection grew overnight. Note to self, an IKEA trip required on return from the US otherwise he will need to construct a bed using the mountain of Danish miniature bricks he now owns.
  • He oversaw the construction of his cake. Mandatory inclusions: Betty Crocker icing and lollies. You can check out the result here.
  • He summonsed the entire extended family to the Sunshine Coast (from Brisbane) for Japanese at our favourite sushi bar – Sakana, Mooloolaba.
  • And he no longer needed (legally) to sit in a car seat to get there.

I must say I was pretty stoked with his choice of birthday lunch venue and the Sunshine Coast finally turned on weather befitting its name.

I realised I’ve not been wearing my coloured jeans – the cut-off Audrey NYDJ style – nearly enough this winter. Opting instead for the longer jeggings length.

Not on this day. Out came my red pair (I have cobalt blue and teal as well). And I’m glad they did.

I wrote a post about how to wear coloured jeans back at the start of autumn and I must say, I mostly let the jeans make the colour statement in most of my coloured jeans outfits combinations. I feel most comfortable wearing neutral colours and letting the jeans do the talking.

I probably broke all sorts of “rules” on Saturday by colour matching my lips with my jeans but, hey it was my “birth” day, I was happy to make my own rules (and drink a champers or two ;)). After all, seven years ago the last thing on my mind would have been the colour of my lippy.

How was your weekend? Did you have an event or occasion to get dressed up for? Or was it a mooching in loungewear kind of weekend? Oh, and what do you wear with your coloured jeans?

PS. Don’t forget to take my survey for a chance to win a $150 Westfield gift card … if you haven’t done so already.

  1. Love the outfit, love the loafers, love the lipstick/pant matching and I LOVE the cake! Sounds like it was a wonderful weekend xx

  2. Hey Nic, Still the same blatant disregard for the rules! Honestly red lippy & jeans, that’s something I would do!

  3. Oh, love this outfit! I am currently obsessed with loafers so of course I love yours. I had a largely lazy weekend but we did go out for dinner and gelato with friends on Sunday and I wore candy pink jeans, leopard print blouse, black smoking slippers and a cropped black jacket. It was the second time in four days that I matched leopard with candy pink! I felt a bit conspicuous but whatevs 🙂

      1. $16. eBay. I now have every colour possible when it comes to jeggings. One must economise when contemplating four shades of pink jeans. That’s all I’m sayin’.

  4. Looking fab, as always! I love the jeans and lippy combo…

I am very much wanting some red jeans for Spring, I must check out yours at NYDJ… I do like a bit of a cropped jean!

  5. Love the outfit, love the lippy matching jeans colour, but if I be really honest I am not a fan of the loafers… I laugh because I see I am vastly outnumbered…

  6. I hope the Birthday Boy had the most fantastic day. I actually think you may have just invented a new fashion rule – matching your jeans to your lip colour! It looks fab! xx

  7. LOL – kinda. My ensembles and yours were WORLDS apart – I was all ‘cowgirled’ up for the Paradise Lagoons campdraft. Scarf possibly not dissimilar. One day I’lll get the courage for a full-length pic.
    🙂

PS You looked awesome (as always). And Happy Birthday to your little man.

  8. Love love your outfit, and love those loafers gorgeous,i just bought a cobalt pair of jeggings in a lovely soft fabric ,But do NOT know what I am going to wear with them yet!!I was thinking white or a tan/caramel colour or if I am really game a orange and red jumper I have ,but haven’t tried them on together yet,I love summer weight scarves too ,they are more comfy than wooly ones I think.Flynn sounds like he had a lovely birthday and You did too,I have never heard of a 7 year old liking sushi and Japanese food but that’s great ,I love sushi so fresh and yummy.I kept my Lego from my childrens childhoods ,it doesn’t date and ispent a small fortune on it back in the day ,for my grandchildren (not just yet i hope) in storage boxes with lids and a washing basket.Love your keeping it real posts …..keep them coming Nikki.

    1. Oh, love cobalt … you could do tan and white, yes. And maybe even a splash of emerald green! I think I’ve indoctrinated Flynn re Japanese and sushi since he was eating solids! Works for us all. I love Japanese food.

  9. Nikki you look fabulous – love the colour combinations. The loafers are to die for and just set off the whole look. Shame the price is out of my budget but any type of leopard print flat would hold the look together surely? Sounds like a great birthday.
