5 for Friday: It’s easy being green

Those of you who have been following me for some time will know that I never used to do colour.

At all.

Black was my best wardrobe friend.

Now, while I haven’t ditched black altogether. God forbid. I HAVE allocated wardrobe real estate to a growing rainbow of all things colourful.

Last summer I was obsessed by orange.

This autumn I’ve been seduced by cobalt blue and emerald green.

Now cobalt blue is not a stretch for me. I’ve been a blue/navy fan for a long time.

But green? Wow.

If anyone had waved a green tunic top or knit in my face two years ago I would have wondered if we were off on a trip to Ireland. For St Paddy’s Day.

Green is simply not a colour I would normally reach for.

But reach, I am doing. And wearing.

A bit like when you decide to buy a particular make and model of car, you suddenly see them EVERYWHERE when they seemingly weren’t there before, I’m seeing green EVERYWHERE.

And I can’t get enough.

PS. My Pop passed away last night … he would have been 95 on Anzac Day. I’m feeling a bit sad even though he’s been sick for a year now. Even more sad for my Nan, who has spent the last 68 years with the love of her life. Watching and hearing her say, “bye bye sweetie” was both beautiful and heart-wrenching. Apologies in advance to my Saturday readers, I need to help out with the funeral arrangements so won’t be blogging about blogging this week (if anyone wants to pitch me a guest post on something blogging or social media-related, I’d be very happy to publish that here instead). You’ll still find an Online Finds post here on Sunday thanks to my writer, Jo-Anne Hui.

  2. Hi Nikki – very sad news, but by all accounts it sounds like your loved one made the most from life.
    My winter colours are orange – I’m loving orange at the moment- and my red NYDJ and the rust CR ones.  I’m loving having these coloured jeans that I can team up with black, tan, cream coloured tops and soon boots.  Got a gorgeous red/orange/tan stripe long sleeve top from CR that goes nicely with these pants too.  And all of this new found loveliness is because of you !!!!!   3. I like purple, navy, some greens but definitely not red. Black and grey are always winners for winter too. The trenery dress is just lovely.

  4. Oh Nikki, so sorry for your loss. Wouldn’t it be lovely if all the good ones could be healthy immortals!

    I am a black and grey and white girl with splashes of red, orange, olive and some fawn. I rarely bother with colour unless the shape of the garment really stands out to me. And I am just so not into mixing 2 different colours together-Colourblocking? I have just got some nice colours in the patterns in new S&R handbags which will be a bit of fun, but black accesories are my everyday!

  6. I’m obsessing over Royal Blue, Emerald and olive green and Beige. I don’t know if that’s season specific or just generally but I am going gaga about them. Love the drape in green Nikki and its perfect for a summer evening it seems…will find the local markets for a wrap like that. If not the exact design, there’s a possibility that I’ll find something similar in cotton 🙂 Surprisingly, even I despised green but somehow I’m not getting enough of it this season. Funny!   10. So sorry for your loss. I understand the sadness of saying goodbye to Grandparents.
    Yes!! I too am looking at all things green. (usually red is my colour I love)
    I haven’t bought anything yet, but I am drawn to green for no real reason.
    Apparently green is good for your heart chakra, so maybe we are both needing to nurture the self in that way?!
    Be kind to yourself and thinking of you and your family, especially your beloved Nan.

  13. I am loving mustard and plum. I do love Emerald, but I’ve always loved green.
    Mustard is a colour I never thought I’d like. It was always the “poo” colour in your colouring pencils packet that you’d try and sneak into your sisters pencil case because you didn’t even want to have it. Now I’m finding that I have to walk away from it in stores because really it’s just one of those pieces you wear with neutrals and let it make it’s own statement.
    I’m also crazy about grey’s, especially dark grey. I don’t know why. I just am. Maybe it’s because I’m in a hating black phase.

    Nikki, I am so sorry for your loss. It doesn’t matter how old someone is, it’s still painful, even when you know it’s coming. Sending lots of love to you and your family right now. xx

For years I was a black only girl too, with some white and the odd pop of red or leopard in there for fun.  I’ve recently started weeding out most (but not all!) of my black in black of navy and grey, still with the red and white for a bit of colour.  But I also love green and am hanging on to a few pieces for variety – in particular, a Jacqui E coat in a spring green that I bought about 4-5 years ago.  It is a beautiful colour, cut and length and I get compliments every time I wear it. 

    My condolences on the passing of your pop.  My Pa died 18 months ago and it was a hard time for me, my family and especially my Nan.  Love and time got us through it.  My thoughts are with you and yours at this sad time.

    1. One of my Seed tank dresses is in the cobalt blue – that is truly out there for me. Living on the edge…. Now I want some red/rust color jeans for winter.

  17. I am so sad for you ,i hope your Nana is ok,i know what that is like when two people so much in love loses the other ,it’s just heartbreaking ,my Nana and Grandfather were married for about  the same length of time and it’s very hard on the one left behind,My thoughts are with you Nikki.
    Yes you will find green in my wardrobe ,not too much but a bit more of an olive green not a bright one ,i am more of a fan of orange and blues and neutrals ,to go with my blacks .
    P.S I got my seed dress this morning ,I am in love at first I thought ,that aint gonna fit (sad face ) then i tried it on ,it is truly a miracle dress(happy Face) ,it fitted it flattered and it was oh so comfy i didn’t want to take it off ,but i am wearing it tommorow night when friends come  for dinner ,don’t know what with yet cause it goes with all my tops in my overflowing wardrobe so that’s another plus,so weather i do not care what you send I have something new and comfy to wear ,while looking chic and glam.

    Emerald suede shoes by Wittner (they look more green and less blue in person); Necklace by Diva; Olive green Chuck Taylors for my 2yo son; and, the last is a Sussan blouse that is on my wishlist (my local store doesn’t stock it so still trying to find it).

  22. Nikki I’m so sorry for your loss, no matter how old they are she’s still your nan and it’s still hard! I hope u find strength and support from ur family n friends as u have it from ur blogging world. I helped organised my grandmas funeral and it felt good to help but it was so draining after it was over. We will understand your absence for a few days!

    On a lighter note, congrats from the move to colour my favourite colour is red, but I love most bright colours, watermelon n cobalt blue have additions this summer.

    Please take your time with writing here plenty of us will help with a post and we understand if you miss some days!

  23. So sorry for your loss. I don’t think it matters whether you see it coming or it’s sudden, there is still a loss.

    I love green but tend to wear more grassy green or otherwise lean more towards khaki type green.

  25. I’m sorry to hear about your pop and your nan to have had 68 years with love of her life that is so beautiful, my thoughts are with you and family.  
    On the colour thing I love green, have a couple of green tops and a green handbag years old and the lining is falling apart but I love it.  I also really like the cobalt blue but don’t own anything except a cobalt tartan jacket that I made in the 90’s from fabric my MIL bought back from Scotland, the tartan is so light and beautiful I have never been able to get rid of it even though I have only worn it once in the last 15+ years and all my 20 something work colleagues thought I was rocking the retro – do you think tartan will make a comeback 😉

My thoughts a love go out to you and your family,  You can never be prepared.  And to your Nanna,  be strong.  I have been watching my nanna-in-law go through this also since her husband passed and the only advice I can give is is just to be there.   On another note,  No favourites here unfortunately

  29. Nikki, I am sorry to hear about your Pop. How romantic, in the true sense of the word, to have 68 years with the love of your life. I would love that to be part of my hubby and my legacy. Thinking of you and your family.
    I have been a fan of green for a looong time. And up until last year that is all that was in my wardrobe in colour. Cobalt blue and orange are my new best friends.

  31. I love green. I wear a lot of it. That sweater by Trenery is gorgeous. I have unsuccessfully tried green nail polish but my nails just looked mouldy. Not pretty.  Rachel xx
