Sunday Sesh: the Date Night In and Mad Men for Banana Republic

Nikki Parkinson Life 11 Comments

We have a bit of a Saturday tradition here at Styling You headquarters, aka our home (the Styling You stuff really does happen in the middle of our living area).

There is usually one teenager or other who needs a work drop off and pick up or a social drop off and pick up plus we have a six-year-old to keep us company 😉 So we like to turn what once would have been a date night OUT to a date night IN.

Mr Styling You and I love getting in the kitchen and mucking around … with FOOD people … get your mind back where it should be on this PG Sunday blog post.

So, our Date Night In always features fancy food. Well, not uber fancy but not the usual throw-together stuff I churn out during the week. You know real tuna instead of the stuff from tins, that find of fancy. And as Mr SY commutes during the week and doesn’t get a “chance” to cook Monday to Friday, he is quite fond of a bit of Saturday night experimentation.

I do have to rein him in sometimes though (remember last week’s video message from Manu … ahhh, Nik-ki Par-kin-son, ahhem … where were we?) which is why the discussion about what’s going on the menu heavily involves our recipe book collection.

Last night, in honour of Jamie Oliver being just down the road doing a show in Brisbane, we delved into Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals, which anyone who owns this book knows they are NOT 30 minute meals.

This is what we decided to brew up:

... we didn't do the brownie and it still wasn't 30 minutes

Plated up. By now, Mr Styling You is all, can we just eat this and stop taking photos?

So yum. I'm no food blogger, sorry that's the best description I can come up with.

After dinner (and big kiddie pick-ups and six-year-olds in bed) we usually sit down and watch a movie or TV series in peace. Last night we watched In Time (it’s a goody – based around a world where time is money). This movie also proved once again that Justin Timberlake made a good move breaking up with Britney all those years ago. Just quietly I much prefer is acting to singing too. It also stared Vincent Kartheiser as the evil baddy, holder of all the time. Which was funny because he plays an unlikeable character in Mad Men (Pete) too.

We are Mad Men freaks … I’m really hanging out for this series to return to our screens. A week or so in the US, I believe.

In the meantime, I’m drooling over the Mad Men collection for Banana Republic. Love that it’s a modern take on such a stylish vintage era.

Have you caught what I’ve been blogging over on Justb. this week?

I wrote about my faves on the red carpet at the Oscars. I talked boobs but not bras and boobs – boobs that don’t work and do what they’re “naturally” supposed to do.

I unleashed my inner geek chic with a look at some very cool iPhone cases.

We started Thing of the Day. Take a look at this coconut spritzer for your face and a very fancy makeup compact.

I asked the big question on everybody’s lips: are you a gloss or a lippy girl?

And I told my shoe (or lack of them) story as part of the amazing In Her Shoes campaign for refugee women in Australia.

How’s your weekend been? What have YOU been up to? Do you have date nights – in or out? And do you love Mad Men?

  1. Your food looks delicious 🙂 I have heard so much about Mad Man but somehow I have only caught one episode and that was thanks to Austar free movies deal but I so love the clothes. Love the wife beater blue chesty bond worn by Mr SY, my hubbie needed a new one for mowing and I bought some poor imitation in K-mart and well I seriously get an ear beating about the fact its not the real thing!

Thanks Caz! We started Mad Men through hiring the DVD series – now download from iTunes when it comes on pay tv – and the chesty bond my husband is wearing is VERY old. Don’t think I’ll ever be able to get rid of it!

  2. Hey there, looks like a good night in! A few people have mentioned they gave a Jamie Oliver 30 (+?) minute meal a go last night. Your meal looks great!
I have done some writing and study this weekend – and have done a lot of cooking and eating!
One of my BFF bloggers Sydney Shop Girl has some Banana Republic Mad Men dresses which look wonderful on her.

  3. That’s enought to make me rush out and buy a Jamie Oliver cookbook and a new wife beater singlet for hubby 🙂
