Summer style memory: roller skating

Nikki Parkinson Life 18 Comments

This week on Styling You, I’m featuring some of the winning responses to my Summer Loving competition. Enjoy today’s memory of summer style.

When WHAM was big and I wore pink CHOOSE LIFE tees,
and my hair was permed in my brand new orange bubblegum jeans.
I roller skated all day without a care in the world
My favourite summer style memory was the ’80s,
So carefree for a teenage girl.

  1. My sisters and I rollerskated our way through the entire eighties. Up and down the footpath out the front of our house. I had the white high-tops and my sis a handmedown pair of ‘sneaker’ skates that we thought were the height of dagginess. Guess which pair are by far the coolest these days!! x

  2. All I ever wanted was a pair of those skates above to wear at the Windsor Skatel! Instead my mum bought me a pair of bright orange pair of those tie on ones – you know the ones that you wear your Apple Pies with? gawd……so embarrassed.

  3. DEFINITE summer memory – going skating wearing my favourite mint pedal pushers and matching pastel striped top, the year I was 14 (they didn’t fit the next year). Hey I was cool! (It was 1981 after all…)

  4. Oh my goodness I LOVE roller skates, I have been tempted for years to buy a pair but I tend to have more of a fear of falling these days then I as a youngster 🙂

Hope your having a fantastic holiday!

  5. I still have my roller skates, they are exactly like the ones in the pic above. I doubt I will ever wear them again, but I just cannot bear to part with them! Just thinking about all that 80s rollerskating makes me smile 🙂

      1. Yep, here I am – a day late because I didn’t check in yesterday. Oh my god, my heart is racing just remembering those days – skating WAS the backdrop to my teenage years – first real kiss, the clothes, the fun, the music, choking on my first cigarette beside the rink before we were locked in, friends, cute boys. It was wonderful – still remember the freedom and joy of everyone having fun. And yes, it was me that had my 40th at a skate rink and it was still FUN. Of course, now I do worry about breaking something but I would love to go more often – if only people would come with me.

  6. I still have my roller skates! white boots with hot pink wheels and detailing. I love them too much to ever get rid of them although I have not gone for a roll for a few years…. I remember dancing to Agadoo (doo doo push pinapple) at the Skateway each week and trying and failing to skate backwards… xxpt

  7. The local shopping centre in our small Hunter Valley town was closed on a Sunday so the PCYC used to host “Roller Disco’s” in the underground car park. Rock and roll!!! We thought we were so very cool.
