The Model and Me: Ever looked at a model wearing an item of clothing that appeals to you and dismissed the purchase out of hand? Yep, me too. Well, I’m here to tell you that you SHOULD get into that change room and give the object of your desire a try. You may not look like the model (I don’t, I’m a size 14), but you never know, it just may look right for you.
As the temperature heats up, I resign myself to months of unattractive perspiration and reach for cool, cotton clothes that I can either throw on over a cozzie or dress up with heels and a few accessories for a cafe meeting.
Sunshine Coast-based label Boom Shankar allows me to do all that AND indulge my inner hippy. Bet you didn’t know I had one, did you?
Hippy chic is definitely one of my multiple wardrobe personalities. I can trace her beginnings back to my step-mum’s arrival to regional Queensland from London in the mid-70s.
Here she was all platforms, cheesecloth kaftans and worry beads … and I was in awe.
Now I call on my hippy chic to inject a bit of casual fun on days spent close to home on the Sunshine Coast.
Here are two of my favourites from the latest Boom Shankar collection, styled on models:
And here they are on me:

Not only is Boom Shankar designer Dui Cameron incredibly talented, she’s an amazing philanthropist, giving back to the Coast community as well as communities overseas. You can read about the work she does here.

Yes! Eumundi markets are the go!
I am rather disappointed that you did not style your hair in those “awesome” pony tails like the models.
Love the yellow one big time.

I think perhaps it’s not the best look for a 40-something 😉
I LOVE Boom Shankar. Why just last week I bought the Cleo skirt in green, the Olivia dress in the same fabric as your Topsy dress, and a pair of Guru pants.
Love your ‘Model & Me’ concept too. You look smashing!

Great purchases – love the Guru pants!
Is there such a thing as a corporate hippie? Love these dresses – the yellow is my favourite.
Author
I think yes. Well a corporate type who likes to let out her inner hippy love child on weekends 😉
I love Boom Shankar. I have a dress and two skirts, and know there will be more added to my wardrobe.

I love Dui’s style plus also the way she gives back to the community here and overseas. She’s created an amazing business.
Could you send me one of these right now? I’m poolside and bored with all my black!!
I think this is the label I was looking at on birds nest recently? Now I’ve seen on you I’ll be going back for a Sally dress….
Author
Yes, Birdsnest stock Boom Shankar! And please spare me the poolside boredom 😉 I was poolside bored myself yesterday and now am not!
Oh, I love these dresses Nikki. This is the ideal thing I’ve been looking for for school drop offs and then dressing up for a morning coffee or shopping trip. You carry those designs off very well.

Thank you Nikki….you do all the hard work for me in these ‘Model and Me’ posts! I am the same size and same colouring! Love those Sambag wedges too BTW.
Author
haha! Happy to do the “hard” work. My wedges are from a couple of seasons ago but they’ll never go out of style.
I agree – the dresses look better on you! Love this label, the fabrics she uses are always so gorgeous… and I’m pretty sure there is a shop just up the road from me…….

Hi Nikki. Like so many others I love your Model and Me post. The Sally dress looks better on you than the model which goes to show you don’t have have to have a models figure to look amazing in an outfit as you have so beautifully demonstrated. Have a nice day. Jo

Thanks Jo. A loose tunic style on a model size can offer a more shapely style on me. That’s why I don’t dismiss those styles without trying on first.
I so want a country road jacket like that for a job interview on wednesday, but couldn’t find one on the coast… love your model and me posts too – gives me confidence to try something new.
Sorry you couldn’t find it Sonya – have just found online but not sure what stores still have. (See link below). Good luck with the interview.
I know I’ve said this before but I LOVE YOUR “MODEL AND ME” CONCEPT!
You look great, and I like the tip about wearing the Metalicus underneath the sheer cotton. Now off to check out the Boomshankar online shop.
P.S. I’ve been looking for that blazer at CR, but couldn’t find it. Is it still available?
Hi Eleanor – thank so much. The jacket is still online so may be in some shops http://shop.countryroad.com.au/#%3Futm_source=countryroad.com.au&utm_medium=shoplink&utm_campaign=ShopLink%2B&page=/Shop/Womenswear/Apparel/Jackets_%26_Coats.htm&product=/Shop/Womenswear/Apparel/Jackets_%26_Coats/WJA390B211/Studio-Suit-Jacket.html
