A smokey eye created using purples; peachy cheeks; or a hot pink lip. Welcome to spring 2011’s bold new palette.
And guess what? I’m not scared. I’m excited.
Getting this look just right – and not like something your Great Aunt Nancy would wear – is all about balance. Just like putting a fashion look together, you don’t want to overdo it in the statement-making department.
Choose your one makeup statement – lips, eyes or cheeks – and tone the rest down.
The effect you’re after is that “pop” of colour.
And there’s plenty of pop in Kit Cosmetics’ limited edition Viva La Color collection, which I was recently invited to experience first hand at the Myer Brisbane City counter*. And by experienced, I mean sitting in a chair while a makeup artist not only did a mini facial on my post-Blogopolis skin, but also created a makeup look around the new collection.
Here’s a little something I prepared afterwards …
But I know you want more. Take a look at the before and after shots again. Click on the image to enlarge (if you must!). See the HUGE difference when my face and eye makeup is complete but I’m still to have the lippy (a hot pink with orange undertones – sorry it looks more orange in the photo and video) applied.
Uh-huh.
Are you getting my spring statement-making makeup drift?

Gorgeous with and without makeup! xox

Thank-you. I do prefer an even skintone though!
I really love the look of KIT’s new palette because the colours really draw me in.

Imagine how much fun you would have with them!
Totally love those colours. Gorgeous! I find a little colour always helps my mood and look. I think I would use all of them…except the yellow maybe! love your pictures…looking hot in all of them. N x

Definitely a mood lifter, Naomi. And I’m going to play around with the yellow. It won’t actually look too yellow once on the eyelid. Will report back.
Oh Nikki, you look gorgeous in all three of those pictures!
I need to learn how to minimise dark circles and lines around my eyes. I have so bloody much and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. But I am sure it’s because I’m not doing it right.

Miss Pink you are too kind. Now about those eyes. Get yourself along to Kit Cosmetics, Benefit or Napoleon Perdis. All have a really good variety of concealers – which you need to help you find the best for you. They’ll also teach you the best technique. x
I recently got myself a huge palette of colours and I’m enjoying using different shades depending on what I’m wearing. These colour look beautiful! And so do you!

Thanks Kel x And I had to laugh at your blog post title as I can’t imagine you ever looking crappy!
I had a Viva La Color makeover too. It’s great that it’s all about being bold with colour this season. I am embracing it!!
And I love your lippie!

Thanks Ling – it was fun, wasn’t it? If I didn’t experience stuff like this, I’d stay in my neutral rut!
Cool video!
I always stick to neutrals too… I’m a bit boring in the makeup department
Author
haha, thanks Paula. I had fun with iMovie for that one. And I dare you to add bright lippy to your neutrals!
That lippy really brings out your eyes! I always tend to go for earthy tones but would love to be a bit more daring with some ‘real’ colour on my lips this spring ..

I do too normally but have started to “branch out” this year. Glad I have.
I have very subtle soft pink and sable eyes by Napoleon Perdis Air Sign eyeshadow quad, pretty flushed cheeks by Becca Petal lip and cheek creme, set by MAC Pinch o’ Peach blush, and the Becca Petal gently pressed onto my lips. My cheeks are popping today! 🙂
Nikki, looking gorgeous as always!

Kim-Marie, you are a goldmine! You could write this blog!!
Oooh, love that color palette by Kit! I always use earth tones. I’m a bit afraid of brights.

Me too Kristin. But this season I’m adding a bright with my neutrals. The easiest way is with a lippy – a red, coral, orange or pink. It makes me feel a bit brighter too!
Quick question, I am a blonde wearing an orange dress out on the weekend, can I still do this? If so, which colours? I’m in the mood to experiment!
Author
Hi Ali, this season is all about colour blocking, so if you’re game you could do a bright pink lippy in contrast to the orange. If you want to err on the side of caution, then I’d go a coral. It won’t be too matchy matchy with the dress but will tone beautifully.
Thanks so much! I’m in the mood for a little fun so pink it is
I am so upset that you guys are on opposite seasons than me…I’ll always be backwards.

Haha, that’s so funny, Rhonda, because I always think we’re behind! We get to see you all embracing the trends six months before us! I think a bright lippy is a good trend to follow whatever the season.
