Editor’s note: ManLand is a semi-regular post written by Mr Styling You. He’s been a bit slack of late, (apparently) busy in his real-world job. Not surprisingly he’s picked up his game in the lead up to Father’s Day. And, having been handed his wishlist for next Sunday, he’d better be on time for next month’s post or I’ll have to advertise for a new contributor. Just kidding, babe. Truly. The whole world will revolve around you on September 4.
Manland’s favourite day of the year is almost upon us. It’s Father’s Day this weekend. Sunday September 4: mark it on the calendar). That one time of the year when when it’s ok for us boys to commandeer the TV remote to watch the footy without looking guilty, when we can go for a surf without having to submit a business case as to why this would be a beneficial exercise for the rest of the family and when you can show the dad in your life just how much they are loved … well, in theory anyway.
Marketing departments all over the “shoppersphere” have been working overtime in recent weeks to flood the junkmail supply chain with suggestions about what you could buy dad on his day.
I know it’s totally consumerist but I’ve got to admit I love coming home and studying a thick wad of retail porn dedicated exclusively to man stuff. There is just so much stuff to lust after.
I love sitting down with a nice thick catalogue from Bunnings, JB Hi-Fi or Rebel Sport and working out just how many home improvement activities I could take on in the next 12 months; or where I could fit a new home gym, surf board or replacement set of cricket gear.
I know it’s only a dream (apparently The Stylist needs new shoes) but there is no harm in looking … or wondering out loud with The Stylist over dinner.
But in reality, if you are looking for gift ideas for Father’s Day, play to our strengths. Us guys are pretty simple creatures. We have clear areas of interest that do not change and we are always happy to receive a new toy/tool/trinket to complement those interests.

I’ve also been trialling* a few man products this month that your man might like. These ones have been vying for space with The Stylist’s beauty product bathroom invasion.
1. NIVEA FOR MEN Sensitive range with Active Comfort System ($7.99-$11.26)
I’m a sensitive bloke, just ask The Stylist. Actually, don’t ask her. She may bring up that time from six years, four months, three days and two hours ago, where I didn’t show here sufficient sympathy during her bout of chick flu. Well, it was the Super Bowl final. Anyway, when it comes to face products, these ones get the big thumbs up on the sensitivity front. They don’t leave me with a nasty rash that may have my work colleagues asking tricky questions. Apparently, that’s because they’re free from parabens and alcohol and enriched with a combination of chamomile and Vitamin E that work together to soothe and moisturise the skin. Works for me and will be adding to the grocery list when they run out. www.niveaformen.com.au
2. American Crew 3– IN–1 formula, 450ml ($29.95)
Another product to put a smile on the faces of those guys who are time-poor and like their grooming on the low-maintenance side. American Crew has got on board with a new formula that is a shampoo, conditioner and body wash all-in-one. Ticks all the boxes. Especially for the gym bag. Ph 1800 104 204 or visit www.americancrew.com
3. American Crew Superglue ($29.95)
This is one hairstyling gel not to be messed with. The name is very appropriate for this moisturising gel formula that thickens hair while maintaining extreme holding power and definition. I don’t recommend for guys with long or fine hair but if you’re blessed in the hair department and keen to style and go each morning, then this is for you. Ph 1800 104 204 or visit www.americancrew.com
4. NIVEA FOR MEN Invisible for Black & White Power Deodorant, RRP $6.29.
NIVEA FOR MEN have developed the perfect underarm deodorant. It doesn’t leave white marks on coloured shirts, prevents yellow sweat stains on white shirts, provides 48 hour anti-perspirant protection and is alcohol free for less irritation. This one is definitely extending the lifespan of my business shirts. Big tick on that front. www.niveaformen.com.au
What have you got planned for the dads in your life next Sunday? Does he stockpile the junk mail too?
* These products were sent to The Stylist in accordance with her product disclosure policy. She kindly passed them on to me.

Retail porn – LOL! Love the business case for any proposal that involves spending time away from family 🙂
It’s my hubby’s first Fathers Day as a dad, so I better get onto organising something special.
I’m sure you’ll come up with something beautiful, Lina. x
Have not had much success in the Father’s Day pressie department, I mean what do you get a Dad who has everything, asks for nothing and well who’s clothing tastes are ummm well beyond my budget, me I am staining once of his backyard fences to match his perfect garden of course!
Sounds like one stylish dad! And I love your idea of doing his fence for him. We’ve got some that need staining too … if you’d like to drop round afterwards 😉
