The $64,000 question: what’s a blog?

Nikki Parkinson Life 24 Comments

My aunty was visiting from Melbourne last weekend. We were sitting at the dining table drinking champers to celebrate her and my uncle’s purchase the day before of their Sunshine Coast retirement home. Then she dropped the question.

“So, what IS a blog?”

Ah, THAT question.

The question asked by anyone not in the blogging community as they struggle to get their head around what I actually spend my time doing.

So, I explained it like this. A blog is essentially a website you can update yourself. I’m a publisher; an editor. Just like I was when I edited a magazine. Except this one you can’t hold in your hands. Unless, of course, you’re reading this on your iPad.

And then I went on to say that I was being flown to Sydney the next day for a blow dry and that I’d be back in Sydney a few days later for a Stolli vodka party, some PR meetings and a meet-up with other bloggers over a karaoke.

Is it any wonder her eyes glazed over just a little bit more as she grappled with the whole blogging concept?

If anyone had told me a year ago that my weeks would look like this and I’d be sitting writing this blog post in the kitchen of my bloggie bestie Mrs Woog (who I’d only just met on Twitter 12 months ago) my eyes would have glazed over too.

If you’re a blogger, what do you tell them when they ask what a blog is? If you’re not a blogger, do you think we are a little bit weird?

Geek lust-have: Chanel silver and pink aged leather iPad holder $970

Chanel Silver and pink aged leather Ipad holder_Porte-Ipad argent+¬ et rose en cuir vieilli

You know how I’m a bit of a geek? And you know how I love a statement accessory? I’m convinced this Chanel iPad case is the legitimate offspring of my two loves. The quilting of the iconic 2.55 bag combined with the elegance of silver and pale pink lining has sent this baby straight to my lust-have list. They’re not in store till September … a girl’s got to dream, hasn’t she?

  1. I tell people (and my husband!) that it is an online conversation that supports the work I do with the Working Mums and Mumpreneur MASTERCLASS events.

  2. I just say it’s like writing a diary or journal, only you publish it online. I can talk about whatever i’m thinking or feeling, or pose questions when i’m in need of advice or help, you can host competitions or giveaways and also enter them on others pages, and it’s a place you can learn about others lives, or to educate yourself on a different perspective. People still don’t get it, but then I didn’t really get it until I became a part of it, so I just encourage people to set out and get involved themselves.
It is a hard thing to explain especially when you talk with awe, love and wonder about people who are “only online” but sometimes you make better friendships this way.

  3. haha love it! I was actually trying to explain to mum over the weekend, why I was taking so many pics of the new decorating we have done in our apartment (I tell you, one trip to Bali and we have more than our fair share of wall art!) I said, since I have a lifestyle blog mum, I want to share with people little bits of ‘lifestyle’ stuff…you know – little tidbits of decorating, favourite recipes, where to go for the yummiest pastries? And she said, why don’t you just call them and tell them?….bless!

  4. I often get asked, how is that blogging thing going? Like it is my latest fad and at anytime i will just say, oh that old thing, I gave that up weeks ago. Which, who knows one day I just might but I can’t imagine that happening any time soon.

  5. It’s 2 completely different worlds for me, my blogger friends understand me more than some of my real life friends. It’s hard for me with work- long hours, kiddies and mum with Alzeihmers to get out and catch up with real friends, so the blogging community are my life line friends. I’m only a newbie but have had so much support via twiiter and blogging that I am over awed by how real and gorgeous everyone is.
A few weeks after I started Blogging I wrote this

  6. If I had a dollar for every time I tried to explain I would probably be able to afford that lovely Chanel Ipad holder and the Ipad to go in it! I never know what to say as most of my friends and family aren’t really computer types or into makeup. My mother still asks me when I’m sent something for review if I actually paid for it and I’m trying to disguise my constant purchases LOL!

  7. All my friends and family call me a geek. I don’t leave the house with out my ipad and I constantly talk about my blog, but never find the time outside of my crazy realworld job to update it. But i explain to them it is an online Magazine of sorts of my thoughts, loves and adventures.

  8. My family is pretty tech savvy, so when I tell them about my blog they have mostly all just taken a look and been all: “Oh, just another place for Daisy to overshare and where we can see photos of the kids.” My Mum is great though, she even has her own blog!

  9. I am lucky because most of my friends know what a blog is but some did not understand the whole guest posting thing. My family on the other hand would not know so I would tell them it was a website.
