Designer chat: Little Joe Woman’s Gail Elliott

The day I feel I’ve made it in the style stakes is the day I feel that I’ve nailed that “effortlessly chic” look that models and celebrities seem to be able to snap their fingers and achieve faster than a paparazzi’s camera shutter.

The clothes they wear scream understated luxury.  The look comfortable but put together.  I can’t help but feel just a little envious of their style.

Former model and designer Gail Elliott is one of those women.  And, not surprisingly, when she did create her own label, Little Joe Woman, it was that effortless style that she had in mind for the core essence of Little Joe Woman.

Read on for the list of celebrities who love the label, some insights into what’s next for Elliott, and a look at some of the spring/summer 2011-12 designs that will be in store from July.

In a nutshell, tell Styling You readers the Little Joe Woman story
Little Joe Woman launched in 2002 in New York by my husband and business partner Joe Coffey. We started with six silk slips and six silk camisoles, in six colours. We have since moved the company to Sydney and have five stand-alone boutiques in Australia. We have a growing national and international wholesale business. In keeping with our signature silk slips and camisoles, the collections now also comprise of leather pieces, cashmere knitwear, jackets and accessories.

How would you describe your label to someone who’s never worn it before?
For someone who has never worn our label before I’d describe it as being designed for women who loves clothes, who like to think they’re effortlessly chic, subtly sexy, stylish and love luxurious, excellent quality … women like me.

What sets Little Joe apart from others?
It’s not trend driven.

Who inspires you when creating a new collection?
When designing a collection I think about what I feel will be missing from my wardrobe the following season. I think about the way my friends and I like to dress and what will appeal to our customers.

Describe the woman who loves Little Joe Woman?
The woman who loves Little Joe Woman is well read, she enjoys travel, is a busy person and loves life. Some women who love and wear Little Joe Woman are Cindy Crawford, Yasmin Le Bon, Elle Macpherson, Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman.

What can we look forward to seeing for Spring/Summer 2011-12?
For Spring/Summer 2011-12 you can look forward to seeing some beautiful prints – we custom make all our prints in-house and have designed a beautiful over-sized delicate butterfly and applied this print to maxi dresses, cocktail dresses, blouses and skirts. We’ve also done a summery leopard print as well as a country cowboy floral print. Expect to see feminine, lux-boho pieces with a slight ’70s edge.

What next for Gail Elliott?
We open our sixth store on June 21 at The Beach House at Bondi Beach and are about to launch our Love in Exile SS2011 collection at David Jones stores from July after signing a four-year contract with them. We will also continue to expand our national and international wholesale business.

PS.  How great does Yasmin Le Bon look?  Was always jealous that she nabbed Simon … because he so only had eyes for me in his video clips, right?

  1. I’ve never heard of this range, but its quite stylish! Something I could imagine wearing, probably the maxi! (the black one…not the seethrough one! LOL)

I admit I had to google who Yasmin was to then find out who Simon was! But I do know the band he was in at least!!

      1. Love your Designer Chat piece Nikki, thank you! xx I was in a Duran Duran video with Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes & John Taylor just before Yassy met Simon- ‘A View To A Kill’ – it’s the sound-track to the Bond movie with Grace Jones – we had a lot of fun shooting it on the Eiffel Tower in Paris! I believe it’s on u-tube! Thanks again! xx

  2. I too dream of effortlessly chic. On a shoestring budget would be an added bonus! Have been a long time admirer of Little Joe’s styling and was also impressed by the great service when I purchased a bracelet from the online store a little while back.

I agree, Jodie … and it is possible. It’s a matter of finding the right cuts and fabrics that work for you and your budget. Love hearing about great online store service. Good to know!

  3. Yasmin is divine. Although I was a John Taylor fan so was totally okay with her. Love that maxi dresses are hanging around for next summer. They are my favourite ‘hide the extra helping of pavlova’ garment in the holidays!

Oh, Penny … yes, love my maxis … will be buying more next season. Love the vision of floating around in one, cocktail in hand (never quite pull off the effortless part of this vision!)
