What Alex Perry did next …

The man who’s known for wearing his sunnies on his head has taken them off to don specs from his new collection – a collaboration with optical giant, Specsavers.

It was this action by fashion design icon Alex Perry that drew an immediate laugh at the launch of the collection in a funky studio in Sydney’s Darlinghurst last week.

Turns out that Alex has worn specs since he was five and is quite fond of a bit of “geek chic”.

The Alex Perry for Specsavers collection features 21 female designs – aimed at the everyday through to couture.    The collection is based around three themes – ladylike chic, metallics and red carpet.

As you would expect with anything that Perry puts his name to, there is style and there is detail.  Lots of it.  From bling to cut out and quilted-patterning detail, it’s all there. Gold, silver, black and touch of fuchsia feature with most frames rectangular shaped.  The exception being the aviator style, offering a retro fashion alternative.

But here’s the thing – all this designer styling doesn’t come with the expected price tag – The RRP is two pairs from $199, including standard single vision PENTAX lenses.

Tips for choosing frames

Oval: Evenly proportioned and softly rounded. You can be adventurous as this face shape suits almost all frame styles.
Long: Go for wide frames with a strong top line. Avoid small, square shapes and instead opt for a style with all over colour.
Rectangle: Defined by high cheekbones and a deep forehead. Consider a wide frame with a strong top line. Avoid small square shapes and try a frame style with all-over colour.
Round: Fairly short with a wide forehead, full cheeks and a round chin. Consider angular or geometric styles as they draw attention to the top half of the face. Avoid oval or round shaped frames.
Square: Defined by a broad, deep forehead, a wide jaw and a square chin. Opt for oval frames as they soften the jaw line. Avoid angular frames as these will emphasise the angular facial features.

About the launch

* Eight models sat bespectacled on each themed “set” with lights unveiling each story for guests.

* Perry hosted and special guests included media personality Charlotte Dawson.

* Guests took advantage of the barista station but avoided the mini lemon meringue tarts (it was a fashion launch after all!).

* Guests got to play and try on the collection.

* The gift bag included L’Occitane Ultra Rich Eye Balm and an empty Alex Perry specs case with an invitation to head in store and receive two pairs of each guest’s choice.

The Alex Perry for Specsavers collection will be available in store from February 28, 2011.
