Get your back-to-work style on

I semi returned to work yesterday.  I say semi because I have three children home with me sharing my “office space” until January 27.  But yesterday, I did have to get dressed and go out and meet people.  In public.

It may only have been two weeks but geez I’m really good at embracing my inner dag, which I have done with aplomb these holidays.  With only three of those days bringing actual sunshine and beach weather, the rest offering rain, rain and more rain, I’ve been hanging out in comfy lounge pants and going sans makeup.  Let’s not even talk about my lack of hair styling (no point really considering the 150% humidity).

So back to yesterday … I had to actually try and remember what I wear to work when I’m meeting clients, or in this case, event sponsors.   Getting into work mode for me is very much about stepping into that work “uniform”.  With the clothes on, the mind is part way there.  And that really does help – especially on the first day back after a holiday.

One of my Twitter friends, the fabulous blogger, Bern Morley,  tweeted yesterday “I just got a waist high black pencil skirt for work. Am most excited.”  And I so got that.  One small purchase (and in this case an absolute bargain from Target) and it could be just the lift you need to get back in the saddle of the working year. So to speak.

So hypothetically, if I were going to do some back-to-work shopping (in reality it’s all about five pairs of school shoes and calculators that cost as much as a netbook), here are some suggestions to help you get your work style on:

This post is dedicated to Lori at Random Ramblings of a SAHM.  Lori’s last post written before her world came crashing down last week was called The Anti-Fashionista.  It made me laugh out loud.  Now I am crying. Lori, my thoughts, love and virtual hugs are with you and your kids.  x

If you can help Lori and her family out by making a donation via the PayPal button below, it would be much appreciated.  The tally so far has reached more than $3000.

  1. I’m a SAHM and occasional from-home worker, so “back to work” for me means getting some good separates that work for the school run/coffee mornings/gymbaroo classes and mean I don’t feel like a total dag when surrounded by the uber yummy mummies of my meighbourhood.

  2. Great post! Like you I am working from home, surrounded by children. My inner dag is fully embraced and fortunately I have nowhere to go for a few weeks more. By then I will have forgotten what a work outfit looks like, so thanks for reminding me.
