Tulipani’s ready for the show. Have you got your MBFF ticket yet?

Queensland fashionistas, listen up.  Have you got your MBFF ticket yet?  This year’s fashion festival is going to be even more amazing than ever.  Watching a show in a marquee on the forecourt of Southbank on a Saturday evening is a far cry from the first year when shows were staged during daylight hours in the Hilton Ball Room.

The new location will certainly add a little New York Fashion Week glamour to the event, which should feel like coming home for Sunshine Coast-based designers, Nick Scalisi and Ilona Karme-Scalisi.  Nick and Ilona are the husband and wife team behind the label Tulipani.  But even before Nick and Ilona got together, Nick’s previous label, Nistka, had shown at New York Fashion Week.

Before settling in Australia eight years ago, the couple ran a hugely successful stable of  labels (Karme Niche) in the US – Instant Karma, Cheap Thrill and Little Thrill. “Cheap Thrill was loved by the music industry as up until that point there was only black available. We introduced colour – the designs, prints and fabrics gave the illusion it was like wearing a tattoo. The prints were more organic,”  said Ilona. {Cheap Thrill was worn by Madonna in her first live interview after giving birth to daughter Lourdes and Christine Aguilera wore Cheap Thrill in her first documentary.}

Nick and Ilona always use the MBFF platform to launch their forthcoming Second Summer and Tulipani Nero (couture) collections, adding excitement and anticipation for the season ahead.

Below I’ve included a preview of their spring 2010 collection, which will start arriving in boutiques around Australia during August.  This collection – which I’m hugely excited about – still features Nick’s original artwork and distinctive prints and Ilona’s eye for patterning, but signals a colourful, fresh break away from winter’s tonal offerings.

“The dress features prominently as a reaffirmation of new found femininity and allure. Nudes and blush tones, eco greens and soft greysare printed in tonal hues taking them to new heights,” said Ilona.

“Made for glamorous warm-weather living, both in the city and on vacation, the collection offers possibilities for the woman who looks to stand out from the rest.”
