Fabulous Friday July 2: What’s made your week?

Welcome to Fabulous Friday.  Every week, I share a little about my week, the good stuff (I’m not into the negative), a little retail therapy and a few fun moments.  Then it’s your turn.  What made your week?  Did you find a fashion bargain?  See a great movie?  Read an inspirational book?  Let me know by leaving a comment below.

Happy New Financial Year to you.  I’ve officially been in business for two years.  Back in 2008 I took a leap of faith (a giant one as it turned out as a little thing called the GFC arrived a few months later) and left behind a 20-year-career as a journalist to follow my passion – and create a business that is a better fit with my family.  I can honestly say that I love every day, whether I’m blogging, on Facebook or Twitter, helping a client discover their inner style and feel more confident or speaking with a group of employees about the importance of a making the best possible first impression.  Bring on the next two years.  I can’t wait.

Like anyone in business, this week’s all been about numbers, you know the stuff that comes part of the wonderful self-employment parcel.  I’m more a words person than a numbers person but I’ve grown to love an excel spreadsheet.  Truly.  It may have something to do with my new “geek chic” glasses.  As soon as I put them on I have to fight the urge to attach a pocket protector to my shirt.  And then I realise, that, no, I don’t have  pocket to protect.  Back to the specs, they’re Jasper Conran from Specsavers and I love the white stripe around the black frame and that they’re slightly oversized.  Yep, bring on my MYOB training.  I’m armed (mmm … eyed) and ready.

Have you heard about Dry July? Yep, that’s right.  Like Feb Fast back in February, it’s a challenge to down the champers glass (or whatever your usual alcohol preference) for a month.  Dry July is a cancer fundraiser as well as a call to health action.  A quick look at my calendar ruled me out of a complete Dry July but I’m thinking of taking my own slant on it.  And it will be a huge challenge.  To NOT buy one piece of fashion – clothing or accessories – for one month. (My husband is choking on his beer/coffee as he reads this)  I’m going to give it a go … but oh the temptation.  Take this Witchery soft trench for instance.  The perfect trans-seasonal piece.  Oh, dear.  It’s going to be a long month.

Marnie Goss’ Frockshop online boutique will also test my resolve.  I’ve long admired this Queensland-based pioneer of high-end fashion retailing.  Marnie started Frockshop from the garage of her parents’ Brisbane home – and now has a busy warehouse/office in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. Make sure you check out her blog – it’s a great conversational look at style and seasonal trends.  Love the guest posts from fashion industry insiders.

Congrats to Kylie Minogue, who today releases her Aphrodite album.  Me and Kyles go way back.  She starred with me in the 1990 hit flick, The Delinquents.  Oh, I always get that story mixed up.  SHE was the star, I was the blink-and-you’ll-miss-me extra at the train station … and sadly, it WASN’T a hit.  We did share a dance floor during filming of the movie, and while I refrained from busting out some “locomotion”, I’m sure she remembers me.

  1. This has been a tough one, girls. It seems we all have a little bit of Kylie in us. The winners are Leisa Jones and Simone de Bouchele. Thanks everyone for dropping by to Styling You. See you all again soon. x

  2. I have too many favourite Kylie moments! I have all of her albums, including aphrodite, have been to her concerts, have her underwear, her perfume, Darling, Sweet Darling & Showtime. I just admire the way she has always stayed so Australian and so loyal to her home country and how she dealt with her Cancer Battle! She is such an ispiration to young girls out there who may lose their way! GO KYLIE!!!!

  3. I’ve been playing Kylie albums since I was a tot. As a child of the 80’s I was there when she was crooning along with heart-throb Jason Donovan on Neighbours. I thought they were IT and a BIT! Her hair was always so bouncy and curly, and her character had the perfect nature to match. Girl next door who was secretly a minxy little sex bomb – the latter really came to the fore when she released “Better The Devil You Know”.

She really had a song for every time in my life, and changed her look and persona to match.
“Tears on My Pillow” I played to death when I had my 8 year old heart broken in 1990. “Word Is Out” helped me to get my single-9-year-old self out of the house and having fun again. “Give Me Just a Little More Time” was released in 1992 and I thought it had be written for my current struggle with growing ever closer to high school. “Celebration” may have been released in 1992, but I was still singing it into my hair-brush when I graduated primary school. “Some Kind of Bliss” had me bopping in 1997 – the year of my first kiss! “Breathe” helped me to cope with my studies approaching VCE. “Kids” (with Robbie Williams) is still an anthem I like to pull out. It was released the year I finished year 12 and graduated, and it truly bought out the mischievous, fun-loving child in my entire class. “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” was the soundtrack to my long-distance romance while I was at a distant university.. then “Come Into My World” came out in 2002 when I finally made the decision to break it off, and told the boy in question our lives were just too different.
“In My Arms” was released in 2008, the year I got together with my current partner. He’s not a hug fan, but gives me my Kylie moments and indulges me when I regale him again and again with the tale of how Kylie and I must be kindred spirits – connected in some mystical way so that we’re going through the same things at the same times. <3

  4. My unforgettable Kylie moment happened about 16 years ago when one of my best friends (still 20 years strong!)and I went to a NYE rave party in Leichhardt, Sydney. Unbeknown to anybody at the party Kylie was to make a guest appearance. Nicole and I went to the ladies and at the basin with her entourage was KYLIE!!, Nicole jumped up and down squealing with delight and starstruck and said I’m going to wee my pants – we were less than a metre away from Kylie. Kylie turned around and said hi girls and we screamed and giggled!

  5. My fav Kylie moment was going camping with my best friend in year seven and listening to her first album on a pink cassette walkman.. each of us had an earphone each!

  6. After a 2 yr wait/delay for Kylie’s postponed concert, I managed to get hold of a 2 yr old ticket for the long awaited concert. I was so excited I was like a kid in a candy store – even though still poorly, suffering form breast cancer, Kylie rocked that stage. Her ending message to the crowd of thanks for everyones patience whilst suffering cancer was heart felt and made me cry and feel proud in adoration for such a strong woman.

  7. I was the queen of Kylie in my primary school years. Locomotion was the first album I ever bought – in vinyl, and I have fond memories of me and my bestie performing ‘dances’ in front of the family in the living room, complete with crimped pony tails (one one side), scrunch pants, leg warmers and fluro socks. When we grew up, we wanted to BE Kylie!

  8. When Kylie had her photo taken with short hair after her breast cancer treatment, I thought that showed great dignity, endurance and confidence. We are used to seeing tons of glamorous images of Kylie fully made up or airbrushed on magazine covers, but this simple photo showed her vulnerable side, and we saw that she truly is a beautiful person, inside and out.

  9. I loved when Kylie became the 5th Wiggle in her bright pink skivvy.
It was nice to see the casual, fun and quirky side of her, and it was great that my kids get to watch an Australian pop superstar performing with performers that they love at such a young age!!

  10. I love how Kylie dealt so gracefully with breast cancer, she was a very positive force. By the way, my fave perfume is Kylie’s ‘darling’ its just divine!! Thank you 🙂

  11. I loved Kylie’s recent promoting of Ponds Cold cream, a celeb promoting a product we can all afford and she not even being paid to promote it!

  12. Tomorrow I have blogging friends coming to my One Horse Town for a weekend of Fashion, Fun, Photography & cocktails —– BRING IT ON! Can you imagine the fun we are going to have in high fashion in a One Horse Town – female friendship in the modern era, none of us have even met! It is definitely going to make my week, maybe even my year 🙂
