Australia’s fashion and beauty world is in a right tizz this week. And rightly so. It’s Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.
And to add to the excitement, celebrity bloggers, writers, stylists and hairdressers are also in the country to add a little glitz to the event.
One such high-profile visitor is LA-based Jamal Hammadi. Jamal is one of seven cutting- edge global hair experts chosen by Sunsilk to co-create new products for specific hair types. Sunsilk’s Addictive Brilliant Shine (from $4.79, 200ml), co-created with Jamal, is a high performance product that gently nourishes each hair fibre to activate its natural shine properties for brilliantly glowing hair.
Jamal worked backstage for Sunsilk on this week’s Alice McCall show (see video below for behind-the-scenes inspiration).
Jamal is renowned for his charismatic work with international couture houses such as Chanel, Dior, Gaultier and Galliano. Featured across fashion editorial, his work has graced haute couture runway shows and dazzled the paparazzi on the red carpet. Jamal’s high profile clientele includes a host of A-listers including Heather Graham, Linda Evangelista, Eva Mendes, Drew Barrymore, Sharon Stone and Maggie Gyllenhaal. His own line, Hamadi Beauty, embodies his organic and environmental beliefs with luxurious, 100% organic products.
I had the chance to ask Jamal for a few tips on how to create celebrity-ready hair at home …
Why should women invest time and money on their hair?
Women across the globe all have this in common, all women want, shine, touchable hair with texture and movement. When clients ask me for advice I first assess their current habits: which products they use, their lifestyle and diet which can save you from spending too much money without the results.
How do you avoid a hair rut?
Express yourself, experiment and be healthy.
How often should you update your style to stay fresh?
Change your style every so often – it’s not just one look these days, it’s about being experimental with cuts, styles and layering – a new freedom for women that will ensure an instant freshness. I remember when flying back from London, my client really wanted a cut to look great coming off the plane, so we went into the bathroom and I cut her hair into a new do… that was so much fun.
You have an organic range of products … is organic the hair and skincare of the future?
Organic products certainly have their benefits and it is so important to understand how we take care of ourselves and what we eat affect your hair and skincare. Using the right products for your hair type can make all the difference – as well as eating good proteins and vegetables. Iron is essential for glossy hair.
How does that sit with your involvement with Sunsilk?
It’s fantastic to be involved with Sunsilk – I wanted to stay true to my natural hair care beliefs so we included a natural rich sunflower oil and pearl extract in my Sunsilk co-creation – Addictive Brilliant Shine – as it gently cleanses and smoothens each hair fibre to reveal luminous natural looking shine.
What’s the hottest red carpet look of the moment?
There are so many but I guess anyone that has hair that represents who they are honestly. I love Carey Mulligan’s short crop and Drew Barrymore’s effortless waves- gorgeous luscious locks.
Why do star clients seek you out?
I love what I do, I love my job and my amazing team – positive energy is addictive.
What’s the one thing we can do to make our hair look fabulous every day?
Rinse your hair with cold water after washing with shampoo and conditioner to lock in moisture and ensure that the cuticles are sealed. Trim your hair regularly to remove dry ends and you will achieve red carpet shine every day!
Jamal’s Sunsilk co-creation Addictive Brilliant Shine is available from all leading supermarkets and pharmacies.
