Are matte nails like black suede boots this winter? You know. Essential.

This season we’re not only looking for a cosy texture in our clothes, we’re also painting it on our nails. Matte, velvet or suede-finish nails in winter hues of black, charcoal, wine red and purple are the look of the moment.

As with all new trends, it feels a little strange trying it on but then when you’re wearing it, it feels just right.

I tried on Suede by OPI in We’ll always have Paris ($19.95), a luxe purple that just screams to be teamed back with a charcoal and winter white outfit – and suede boots!   Well, when I say, I tried on, I took it along to my manicurist and asked her kindly to make my nails look half-way decent.

This look is best suited to shorter nails.  The suede effect gives the illusion that the nail isn’t smooth … but it is.

The trick with these nail colours is that you throw all the usual manicure requirements for base and top coats out the window.  Two coats on a bare nail is all you need.  The downside is the manicure doesn’t last as long.

Guest blogger Xanthe Coward* had similar fun with Zoya’s Mattevelvet collection ($17 each) .  Here’s what she had to say about her winter talons:
