Noosa designer Simone Leete is taking her label to the track on the first Tuesday in November.

And it won’t be shown at just any track.

Her MiMi First label has been invited to enter the prestigious Myer Fashions on the Field at Flemington – Design Award.

The Design Award, which encourages outstanding racewear design, is an integral part of the Emirates Melbourne Cup Day.

This “invitation-only” category of Australia’s largest Fashions on the Field event was introduced in 2005 to recognise the contribution designers had brought to event.

It provides designers with a chance to showcase their racewear collections and draws focus on discovering emerging racewear design talent.

MiMi First designer Simone Leete“I’ve been furiously working on creating my designs for the event … my mind is in a whirl,” said Simone.

“I have drawn my inspiration from feminine styles worn by women in the 1950s, a time when a lady would not leave the house without her hat and gloves … much like a modern girl off to Flemington for Melbourne Cup,” she said.

Judges on the day will base their decision on style and originality, interpretation of the latest fashion trends, appropriateness of the outfit for Cup Day and attention to detail – and there must be a millinery component.

If Simone’s designs are successful in getting through the heats, she has a chance of winning a range of prizes including a trip for two to Paris, a SAAB 9-3 Convertible for 12 months – and the chance to present her designs as part of the 2009 L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Week.

“I’m still pinching myself that I’ve been invited.  The opportunity to expose my label at such a high-profile fashion event is amazing,” said Simone.

“I love dressing women of all ages shapes and sizes, and encourage self expression by providing an ecclectic mix of classic and the unexpected,” she said.
