The Model and Me: Motto

I got particularly excited discovering the news that soft pants were an official fashion trend for autumn-winter 2014.

What’s not to love about a soft pant, AKA fancy trackies?

They always fit. And importantly they feel just as comfy on the couch as when out and about.

The key to finding said pants that are fit for public consumption is that there has to be some kind of shape to them.

The the best public-worthy soft pants have a good balance of relaxed and streamlined style.

They show our shape but skim over the shapely bits we’d like to skim over.

For summer, I’ve had a few of this style of pant on high rotation: the Country Road chambray utility pant (which so many of you jumped on and as seen here), the Mela Purdie black pant (as seen here) and the Sportcraft dotty pant (as seen here). Each are elasticated at the waist and each are cut so they flow over my hips, just so.

The newest soft pant to tick all my wardrobe boxes is the jersey crop Lauren pant from Melbourne-based label, Motto.

Here they are on the model.

The Model

Motto pants, cami and top

Motto Lauren pant $89.95 | Cami $49.95 (on sale) | Manix T top $79.95

and Me

Motto pants, tank and top, Country Road sandals, Samantha Wills necklace and earrings

Motto pants (I’m wearing size 16), tank (I’m wearing size 16 but could wear a 14) and top (I’m wearing size 14)* | Country Road sandals | Samantha Wills necklace

I love that these are cropped. It’s a flattering style that works well with flats or wedges. The jersey is super comfy to wear but the style is streamlined down the legs so is a winner in my fashion books.

The tank top could be worn on its own but layering a mesh top over the top adds interest – Motto is known for its easy layering options and even offers tops in a number of lengths to best suit you body shape and layering preference.

I’m a bit in love with the mint/black combination. It’s fresh and a great trans-seasonal combination.

Motto is a family-owned and operated fashion success story. You’ll find its stand-alone stores in key parts of Victoria and Canberra plus the label is available in select boutiques throughout Australia and New Zealand. It also offers online shopping, with customer service second to none.

I have just been introduced to your blog. Thank you. I was inspired to buy 2 items from motto. The striped tunic dress that you have modelled and the long Lauren pants. The service as you said is second to none, but what surprised me most was the feel of the fabric I wasn’t expecting it to be so nice. I have a lot of reading to catch up on your older posts.

  • Holly

Wow I love these pants, may have to get a pair!

I love this outfit so much that I bought the top and am wearing my version of the whole outfit today!

      Oh fabulous Jen!

  • Alice

Dressing up trackies is my fashion heaven. You look much better than the model!!

      My fashion heaven too Alice!

  • Maxabella

You’ve made me a fan, Nikki. You always make me believe that outfits are possible with a little consideration. Love the shape of these pants. The ankle taper is so flattering. x

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

We usually don’t take the time to consider, I think that’s the problem. And I’m in those pants again today and loving them even more. So comfy yet acceptable when I go out to school this afternoon.

Thank you Nikki for showing me how beautiful and versatile Motto’s range is. I’ve just been shopping now! I’m going to be in big trouble later… I do love your suggestions and especially the model and me posts – this is the third time I have bought something after seeing you in it. In fact I’m wearing the multi-coloured Verily missi maxi you wore in August 2012! I LOVE it and always get comments when I wear it. It is so easy to throw on. I’ve done quite a bit of damage at Sequins and Sand too thanks to you! Thank you for showing me how I can dress flatteringly and stylishly despite being a size 16!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Oh Tash, that’s wonderful … see value for money. Something you bought in 2012 is still getting comments. It’s better to have less but what you do have works for you. Glad I’ve been of help.

Soft pants and I have built a very strong relationship…It may or may not have something to do with the elasticated waist & the total comfort factor ;) So to cement my love of all things soft & stylish,, I’ve just brought my 6th pair today – I guess you could say I’m hooked!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

You’ll need a dedicated section of your wardrobe Bev!

  • http://www.notsopeachie.com/ Chantelle Refalo

I love the combination of the black over the mint green it makes the top half look a lovely emerald colour. I normally would have worn black under black but now I’m thinking why have I been doing that!!!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

The pop of colour keeps it fresh but I still like all black too Chantelle!

  • Mindy Roestenburg

Love a soft pant and love that there are so many available at the moment. These ones look great. They are the perfect item for my casual wardrobe, comfortable and stylish all at the same time.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Thanks Mindy – they are all that!

  • Sonal

Well Miss Nikki, you certainly look absolutely gorgeous….I swear you look prettier and younger with each post. You look fab in the soft pants. ….I’m not convinced as I’m short ( 5 ft ) and hmmm, a bit chunky in the middle..

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Thanks so much … the cropped style will look long on a shorter person and because of the streamlined nature of the pants you can wear a top that’s longer too.

  • Kelly

Great looking outfit – I like soft pants in theory but for me they take a little bit of effort to find the rights ones for me. Worth the effort though.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

I think they’re worth the effort but maybe they’re not you. You have to feel confident in wearing them outside the house.

  • http://soniastyling.com/ Sonia from Sonia Styling

Once again, you’ve out-styled in the model in my eyes! Soft pants have literally changed my wardrobe! I now own 4 pairs and love them because they are so easy to style.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

So easy to style – and wear – that’s a win in my books Sonia too!

  • teal

I love a soft pant – just not on me. Even the CR chambray pants which look so lovely on you and many others just scream pj pants on me! The search will have to continue….

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Maybe the style is just not for you … stick to tailored and jeans because it’s always about what makes you feel confident.

  • Reannon Hope

So strange seeing you in black Nikki!

I love a soft pant ( those who don’t are strange ) but I prefer a wide leg & with my height & super wide calves I can’t do a crop- any tips on where I can find something to suit me?

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

I’ve just tried to stalk your instagram to check out these calves that you speak of! But no calves to be seen! They could not be wider than mine I wouldn’t think … I can’t fit mine into most knee-high zip-up boots!

Wide leg pants are only really good if you can wear heels in my opinion – if you’re tall then yes the crop won’t fall in the right place but a longer pant would and streamline at the ankle for you if that makes sense?

  • Janelle@awhitefarm

Comfy pants? Black and mint? Cropped? Oh you’ve really nailed it today Nikki!!! Actually I really like the look of the shape of these and they’d probs be the perfect full length for my short a*^~: legs! Off to google. Again. x :)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Yes, they’d be ideal for a shorter leg as full-length pants!

  • Petra @ daisymaycupcakes

What a super-comfy looking outfit Nikki – I love the model and me posts!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Thanks Petra … glad you do!

That outfit looks great on you! I adore soft pants, particularly on my caravan holiday. They are so easy on my tubby middle during hours in the car. I have CR chambray, black and white pattern Roxy, and Metalicus grey/black pattern pants, along with my faithful NYDJ’s with me. Nothing needs ironing, all are so comfortable. They can also be dressed up or down, just perfect at home as well as on the road. I will be stocking up on more!

That’s a very impressive soft pants collection Lisa!

  • Johanne Taylor

Ooohh those pants are in leopard, too!

I do love a soft pant and am wearing some Seed cropped ones today. I also have those Mela Purdie ones you have highlighted, in my collection.

I know that you and I seem to wear the same size in pants and you’ve gone for a 16 this time, Nikki. Is that because you want them to be really drapey? Do they stretch out a bit during the day? I don’t care what the label says, just hate when you go for the larger size and then the pants stretch out further.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

My Mela ones are a 16 too Johanne … my hips are my widest point so I like them to drape over them. I would fit the 14 in these but same again gone for larger for the drape. Haven’t found they stretch out too much. My CR ones do more – and they’re a 14.

      • Johanne Taylor

Thanks Nikki. Selecting the right size is my biggest issue with online shopping!

  • Kathryn

I was just thinking last night that I might have enough clothes to get me through autumn/winter, but dammit – I *really* like this outfit. It looks fab on you. And your hair is STILL looking stunning.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

This was photographed the afternoon of the blowdry Kathryn!

  • Shelley

I can vouch for the helpful service Nikki, the girls in the Hampton store in Melbourne will happily spend time styling you to look your best, without being pushy. I have bought a few things there and they are all super comfy!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Oh that’s great to hear Shelley – great recommendation.

  • Miriam

Yay I love this look! I tried some printed harem pants over summer but they just didn’t work on my short legs. What I loved was the so fabric and elastic waistband, especially if you sitting at a computer working from home. I have a similar winter version (think same top but long sleeves) of that crop top that my mother in law just bought me from the UK so you’ve just given me a great idea of how to wear it.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Oh that’s great Miriam .. and a cropped pant like this would be full length for you maybe?

  • shoppegirls

Looking fabulous Nikki in today’s Model and me post. I live the mint and black combination also. The whole outfit looks super comfy.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

So comfy Vicki and I love a splash of mint.
