What’s floating my beauty boat

Come on in to my bathroom … it’s vlog time … time to share some of the beauty products that have been floating my beauty boat of late.

As you know, it takes a bit to float my beauty boat. I need it to either make me feel a little pretty (hello pop of lipstick colour), make me smell nice or give my skin a bit of a glow.

I don’t ask for much, do I?

What's floating my beauty boat? #vlog

1. ModelCo Turbo Lash Wand $35

2. Jane Iredale Cherish Lip Fixation $38 ($2 from every product sold will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation)

3. Elizabeth Arden Liquid Eyeliner in Brown $42

4. Olay Regenerist Night Resurfacing Elixir $49.99

5. NIVEA Limited Edition Pearl & Beauty Deodorant $4.99

6. Ella Bache SpiruLines range, from $59

I’ll leave you with a little beauty food for thought … interestingly it’s come from a survey of 7000 Australian women conducted by beauty company, Olay …

  • Those buying skin care products are spending an average of $27 per month, the equivalent of $175 million across Australia per month.
  • The majority of women (57%) admit to buying a skin care product just because it is new to the market.
  • Nearly half of women (48%) rarely or never believe the claims made about skin care products.
  • Most women (60%) say that skincare brands only occasionally live up to the claims and 20% have never noticed the results that a skincare brand says they can expect.
  • Only 15% of women believe that anti-ageing products do the job they are supposed to do.

Which of the above applies to you? What actually tips you over the buying edge to try something new?

* All of the above products were sent to me for editorial consideration, in accordance with my disclosure policy.

Loving the vlog – you’re so adorable both on camera and in person!
I was lucky enough to receive a SpiruLines facial treatment from Ella Bache Noosaville on Tuesday and I can categorically say that I have never felt my skin be so happy! It wasn’t just the tightening effect, it was the blissful way I felt plump and glowing. Yay for Ella Bache!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Oh, I saw that on Instagram – I’m not surprised the treatment was great. You can feel that in the products!

Hey Nikki, I was just wondering do you use a moisturiser with UV protection in or a seperate sunscreen on top of your usual moisturiser? I’m new to the Australian coast so I can’t decide which way to go, any recommendations would be great? Thanks :)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

A bit of both Melanie – most days I’ll just use my BB Cream as it’s got an SPF 25-35+ – works for me if not going out to the beach. If a beach/outdoorsy day, I use a 30SPF proper sunscreen – otherwise I’ll burn.

  • B

    You rocked that Vlog!

    Love the information.

I am a tough nut to crack with beauty products. I have been to a skin specialist who has pared down my lotions and potions to 4 products. I have had bad acne and have scaring and oily skin {pretty picture hey!} so I am a beauty counter dream come true – they all want to ‘fix’ my skin. It is hard going choosing a new product because of this…

I am off to my skin doctor again and talking about some new things I might try improve the texture of my skin….

My poor husband… He has a wife who is expensive to keep in jeans, shoes and skin!

Thanks B – and I’m with you – if you have specific problems such as acne then call in the medical experts for product guidance.

Love your vlogs, you look so natural :)
Only problem I have is I don’t use deodorant that contains aluminium & someone said Nivea made one. Have you heard of it & could you do a review please?

  • Kate from Seduced by Beauty

As a beauty blogger I rely heavily on other bloggers opinions when considering what to purchase. I love researching products before forking out my hard earned cash.

The last product I bought without researching turned out to be a ‘dud’ and I was quite cross that I hadn’t checked it out properly.

I love reading and watching your vlogs Nikki. It is great to find another blogger who is in a similar age group to me as a lot of beauty blogs are written by 20-30 year olds and as you know, their concerns are different to ours!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

The concerns are very different Kate! And they seem to be incredibly well educated in skincare and makeup – more so than our generation was at their age. Well me, anyway. I’ve learned most post 30 since I’ve been writing about beauty.

I am still on the hunt for a good foundation. I don’t know what it is about my skin but it just rejects foundations making them either look really oily or it dries my skin out quite bad.
Before I even look at a product to buy it has to have sparked my interest in some way. Hearing about it from a friend, a memorable ad (on TV or in a magazine)….it just has to already have stood out to me before I will notice it on the shelf. Still, I am cautious about what I will purchase.
I generally don’t look at anti-aging creams because I am lost completely on that. As long as I have a good exfoliating cleanser and a moisturiser with SPF that’s the limit of what I look for.
I am loving L’Oreal’s Lash Architect at the moment.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Mmm … re the foundation … Illamasqua has reduced its prices, if you can get to a counter (selected Myer stores) try its Skin Base Foundation. It’s been my favourite for a year now.

I tend to believe friends’ recommendations or that of my beautician (who works from home) rather than advertising…or even write-ups in magazines by beauty editors. Call me sceptical, but I believe those I trust!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Trust is important – especially from someone with credibility Sonia.

  • Lisa Mckenzie

I do buy beauty products quite often but at the moment I am being very careful before I do fork out for the full size, because of the senstivity issues,I still don’t know what caused the horrible reactions and dryness I had but it has cleared up and I am being super cautious .That Olay serum looks like it is worth a try and I like the look of that eyelash culer,I have very skinny eyelashes and it looks like it is super easy to use.The gel eyeliner ditto to that as well.
I do believe products can make you look fresher but not take away the wrinkles.
Your skin is lovely Nikki, whatever your doing keep on doing it.
I could not help but notice some of your gel polish has come off, that happens to me as well,I’m thinking it has to do with the amount of handcream I use? thoughts? please.
Thanks for the Vlog Nikki,I like seeing what is new and I might have missed.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

LOL Lisa, I wondered if someone would pick that up – yes, two nails did not even last a week. For me it’s certain colours – this was the first time this colour went like this. I was also doing some pretty vigorous spring cleaning on the weekend! And re my skincare – because I trial a lot of stuff it’s a bit of a cocktail at times … I think when it comes down to it as long as you have some kind of regular routine in place, it works in the long term to keep your skin looking good. That and sunscreen!

  • denikenny18

Please excuse my ignorance regarding the curling wand Nikki……do you find it best to use on naked eyelashes or after applying mascara? I am blonde, older, and a little confused about such issues so rely on your info TOTALLY!

    • Carolyn

I have had that Modelco wand for a few years now, you use it on lashes after you’ve mascaraed. It works well and is very gentle.

      • denikenny18

Thank you so much for that advice.

        • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Love that Carolyn helped you with this – have been off the computer all day!

        • Carolyn

I must add that the battery lasts for ages too.

      • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

        Thanks Carolyn!

I don’t buy beauty products every month because most of mine last at least three months. I stock up when on sale and I only buy a new product on sale and ONLY if it is a reputable label and supposedly works. Having said that, Loreal’s Luminosity did not work for me so it’s onto Olay. I’m going to bombard my face with the Regenerist 14 day Intensive, Derma Pods, and Microdermabrasion kit (had to buy from the US because it’s not available here), plus the Definity tone correcting anti ageing serum. It had better all work!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Good luck JDS – I hope it does too!

  • Mrs Woog

Love your vlogs! I feel like I am just sitting in your bathroom having a chat! PS Need that Model Co wand right now! x

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

I wish you were sitting in my bathroom because then we would be drinking wine as well x

  • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

I’ve got a new clamp from Sephora but I find this much easier to use!

  • http://www.facebook.com/rhondalyn.jeffares Rhonda-Lyn Jeffares

I spend a good $100 a month on skin products but love them and love to feel good :)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

      That works for me!

  • karen

Love the vlog. I am in need of some new skin products. The olay sun sensitivity side effect really puts me off but maybe time to look at something more expensive like the Ella bache. Too scared to Google how much their serum costs though.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Thanks so much – there’s a link to the range under the photo. Cost is not too bad for salon products.
