Do you remove your makeup every night?

I woke up on the morning of my 30th birthday … *cough* … a few years ago and a bit like a New Year’s resolution, decided to use this milestone to rule a line in the sand of my skincare routine.

I was going to be all grown up and proper.

That three-step program the lovely Clinique ladies in their white lab coats taught me many years before that? I was actually going to execute it. Not just once a day. But TWICE.

Gosh, horror.

Yes, I was determined to never again go to bed with my makeup on.

The ultra-lazy-girl in me had been been kicked to the bathroom floor. I was not getting any older … and nor was my skin.

Do you remove your makeup every night?

I never told anybody about this “resolution”. So, why am I telling you now?

Because a survey by Olay this week offered me solace. That I hadn’t been alone in my makeup removal loneliness.

Because according to this survey of 7000 Australian women, almost half of Australian women who wear make-up (46%) admit they do not always remove their make-up before
going to bed.

Are you one of them? Do you remove your makeup every night? Are you Miss-Goody-Makeup-Remover-Two-Shoes? ;)

Want some help on breaking the non-removal habit? Head on over to The Hoopla. I’m dishing out some lazy-girl beauty advice for you.

I’m home most of the week so I only wear it when I go out. I use a wipe to get off most and then use my cleanser, toner and moisturiser.

      That’s a good routine!

I am a goody-two-shoes when it comes to makeup removal. Although I wasn’t always!! (Many a night at Uni and in my early 20s I slept in a full face of makeup!) I must say it has totally changed my skin. And I’m actually pretty lazy with the rest of my skincare. I just can’t stand the thought of sleeping in my makeup anymore. I must have das clean face!!

So did I Rosemary, so did I – and yes, it makes a big difference to your skin!

  • Paula

Total goody two shoes here. Always need a clean face to go to bed!!

Haha! Nice to read this post.. its something we all are lazy about I guess, but its important to practice :)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Very important to work on the ritual!

Eek – I have only recently discovered makeup wipes for nightime cleansing but still only use them 50% of the time – however, I only have the remnants of BB cream or tinted moisturiser to remove so hopefully I’m not doing too much damage?! Once in a blue moon, when I wear foundation and eye makeup out at night, I always remove it before bed…no matter how many vinos! x

I wouldn’t stress Julie – it just does make a long-term difference if you’re consistent with any skincare routine.

Sigh. I am Miss-Goody-Makeup-Remover-Two-Shoes. Many nights I have wished I wasn’t but I just can’t relax and sleep until I am clean. I assume I am going to reap the benefits of this as I get older – there has to be a benefit behind all this committment.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

That’s the sign of a ritual and that’s a good thing!

  • Bev Williams-Krause

It could be said that I have a split personality as to whether I’m a bedtime make-up remover or not…one of my personalities can easily be persuaded with a glass of vino, to be very naughty and not remove my make-up. I am pleased to add though that I am a goody-two-shoes most of the time :)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Bev, I do love a multi-personality influenced by vino, but you knew that right?!

  • Richa

Not surprised that so many women don’t take their makeup off before going to bed. As I have gotten older (now early 30s), I’m more careful to do it because I don’t want to ruin my skin! Fear of aging is a good motivator, I suppose! :)

Fear of ageing skin got me Richa!

I must admit, I am a complete goody-two-shoes about this. I always, always, ALWAYS remove my makeup before bed. In fact, I sometimes try not to because I’m tired… but I will undoubtedly talk myself back into it either on the way to bed, or I have even been known to get back out of bed and do it. I can’t sleep otherwise!

Now it’s a habit for me, I feel the same way. It’s part of my bedtime ritual!

  • Lisa Mckenzie

Yes I am a Miss goody two shoes makeup remover ,I must admit ,my anal personality probably makes me this way ,but I am still lazy I usually use a cleanser and then wipe off all the makeup with a makeup wipe ,but i have removed my makeup before bed for as long as I can remember, doesn’t matter how late or how tired I am I take it off.Just habit I suppose, but one of my “good” habits!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Lisa I applaud and salute you!

    • Deb

I’m like Lisa…I have removed my makeup every single night for the last 20 years. That is exactly half of my life! I get many compliments about my skin, so that makes me very happy. I’ve been absolutely plastered from big nights out and I still stand (possibly swaying somewhat!) at the basin washing my face properly (or sit on the floor of the shower doing the same). Oh, and I was also one of the kids at school picked on for having ‘brown zinc’ all over their face…thanks Mum – I didn’t enjoy the teasing at the time, but I’m so pleased now with her efforts way back then. Great post, Nikki.

        Your mum’s a legend Deb!
