I came. I saw. I shopped. Here’s my Sephora haul

I posted and Instagram photo while we were at Disneyland two weeks ago.

No, it wasn’t the one of me in Minnie Mouse ears. Nor, was it the one of CoronaRita my husband consumed over dinner.

It was this one:

Sephora haul Downtown Disney
Yes, here I was in the middle of Downtown Disney (a street mall between California Disney Adventure and Disneyland) and I was as happy as a makeup pig in mud.

In fact someone did comment that the mere presence of Sephora at Disneyland only cemented the theme park’s status at the happiest place on earth.

Now, yes that someone was Australian and someone who is well aware of the delights contained therein.

Specifically, the cheap delights contained within.

If the Sephora phenomenon is new to you. Let me paint a picture.

These meccas to makeup and skincare are EVERYWHERE in the US – and Europe – they are merchandised to seduce and sell and, if you are a regular makeup counter frequenter in Australia, you will lose your mind over the prices.

I lost my mind on several visits.

Check out my vlog to see the Sephora haul that came home with me.

As for the store layout and displays, our own Mecca Maxima stores (particularly the new one in Brisbane’s Wintergarden Centre) do a very good and enticing job in this department.

And I have heard that Sephora is coming to Australia. This kind of excites me. I do worry, however, that some of the shine associated with this store will be lost with the high prices we have to pay here for comparable makeup and skincare.

I’d love to know why that is? Surely it’s not all government import duties?

I’m a big fan of this browse, buy and ask for help if needed concept in beauty buying … so we shall see how Sephora rolls out here.

In the meantime, I’ve got plenty to play with.

Here are my faves:

Sephora haul

1. Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Vernis À Lèvres Glossy Stain in Orange De Chine - you can buy it here in Australia | 2. Nars Foreplay cheek palette - you can buy it here in Australia | 3. Illamasqua Nail Varnish in Gamma – you can buy here at selected Myer stores

Have you shopped at Sephora in the US, Asia or Europe? What’s your must buy when in store? And as an Australian beauty consumer, do you wonder why we have to pay higher prices? UK makeup company Illamasqua started to fight for fairer Australian beauty prices and as a result has lowered them 35-42%. Check out the range here at Myer online.

While not Sephora, something came over me in London – I bought four lipsticks in Booths! Four! I owned two when I left Australia! And i wore my lippy each day overseas. Now not so much! It was a holiday fling! Cheap too!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Oh Booths … the perfect holiday fling for sure!!

Hi Nikki, regarding the pricing in Aus, Illamasqua has just introduced new pricing (substantially lower prices) read here http://www.illamasqua.com/fairpriceforbeauty/
So lets all support them in this move and put some pressure on all the rest.
I am not affiliated with them whatsoever.
Prices have already been reflected on myer’s online shop. Don’t forget everyone, free shipping from them..
Been wanting to check out their foundation for a little while now so will def b doing that now:)
    BTW luv Sephora!!!

Hi Adele – yes, I actually included this update in the post after this one … will go back and add it here too! It’s an awesome move!

Jealous of your haul Nikki! I’ve been eyeing off those YSL Glossy stain’s for a while now; they look amazing as does the NARS Palette :)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Oh, I love the YSL glossy stains – already had one so knew I had to add to the collection. They’re the right balance of staying power and moisture for me and I love the brush applicator.

The Fuschia shade looks gorgeous, they sound perfect for spring/summer so I may just have to pick one up!

I did a little internet sleuthing and it looks like jobs (make-up consultant) pay around $12 – $15 an hour. But — and it’s a huge but! — we don’t yet have universal health insurance. If you get it through your employer it’s a few hundred dollars a month. If you have no insurance at all, you might have to end up in what we call “A doc in a box,” in other words, a small business where they diagnose minor ailments like colds or flu, and charge $100 for a visit. Of course medications are on top of that. Forget about it if you have to have anything more complicated than that. So you have to take that into account — the cosmetics might be cheaper here, but medical insurance makes all the difference.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

That’s a big factor Cheryl – we actually had to use a walk-in medical clinic for my son and it cost $125 – was very good service.

I’ve just returned from living in Canada for 15 months & I actually found Sephora to be more expensive for a lot of Skincare and Fragrance than the local drug stores (same applied in the US), which stock almost everything Sephora did that I was looking for (Clinique especially). Just a little tip, I’d say 10% difference easy. I felt the same when I first discovered Sephora many years ago though & I will definitely check them out if they arrive in Australia :)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

      “Local” knowledge – love it!

  • Lizzy

I love Sephora! My latest purchase is one of the make-up sponges, the BeautyBlender. They are seriously good when applying foundation. I would like the new YSL Touche Eclat foundation too – much cheaper in the US. For delivery I’ve been using a delivery service (Qannu), the shipping prices are pretty good and they don’t charge any fees to buy the goods on your behalf :)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Thanks for that monumental tip Lizzy!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Karlene-Forrest/705836016 Karlene Forrest

I love Sephora and have a points card. I place an order once a year and get it delivered to a friend in the USA. It’s still worth the shipping cost as prices there are half what they are here.

    • Ebony

Karlene, I have a friend in the US who is willing to do the same for me, however, how do you pay, as I don’t think Sephora accept international CC’s?

      • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Yes, Ebony I wondered about that. Some companies need the credit card address to match the delivery address.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Just wondering how it goes accepting your credit card but sending on to someone else?

  • Paula

Oh Lordy yes have I shopped Sephora! And I’m someone who rarely wears more makeup than a bit of concealer… But I go nuts in these shops. For me, the thrill is buying face creams, eye shadows etc that I use for a while – and every time I get them out it reminds me of where I bought it.

I was in the Sephora in central Paris a few years ago with my mum, between us we had an enormous haul of products and after I’d handed over my credit card, the French lady asked me to wait and walked off. I started freaking that I’d maxed out my credit card – but no, she came back with a smile and an armful of free product bags for mum and I. I still use some of the bags in my bathroom cupboard.

    • Paula

…. And ideally rate their “own” brand of makeup. So cheap and it’s always been goog quality.

      • Paula

*i really rate*. That meant :)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Oh, that is VERY cool. VERY!

  • dothemath

The prices are high in Australia because our wages are high. Cut our wages and prices will drop. It’s basic economics. Retail workers earn about $6/hr in the US, here it’s $15-$20/hr. Don’t blame the government, it’s us that demands higher wages

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

I’d like to think it was as simple as that (and that you had a real name!) but what wholesale price are the products being bought at when they arrive in Australia – the retail mark up comes after that and yes our wages are higher. I’m not government blaming, just trying to understand the bigger picture.

  • http://twitter.com/Marketulka Marketa Valentova

I absolutely love Sephora. I frequently visit their store in the OC.
Even their own Sephora range is pretty good and very reasonably priced.
My latest purchase: instant moisturizer and eye make up remover
and flashy liner in moss. Actually, when I go thru my makeup bag
about 90% of my makeup was bought at Sephora.
And if you own their loyaty card you receive a birthday present.
I saved up heaps of points and received The porefessional balm and mascara
by benefit as a free gift last time I shopped.
    I’m like a little kid at a lolly shop – I ❤ Sephora.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

I was shopping with my sister-in-law on this trip on her birthday and she used her card for a little gift. Then they gave me one too!

  • Poppy

I wonder what happened to my comment?

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Sorry Poppy – have looked in the spam folder but it’s not there.

  • Denny

We travel to Cape Town each Christmas (hubby is SA) and I buy all my cosmetics, French underwear, haircare etc there, It is so much cheaper and we can’t figure out why. Surely the shipping to Sth Africa would be approx the same as to Australia so that is no excuse? We can only attribute it to our Government Tax so with a female PM shouldn’t we appeal to her (after all her skin and make up always looks immaculate (perhaps she grabs suitcases full of product when she’s o/seas on government business)???????

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Hahaha Denny, I had visions of Julia scoping out Sephora like I did. And interesting to hear your experience in SA.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Johanne-Taylor/100000780773879 Johanne Taylor

The high prices for beauty and skincare are why I buy all of mine on-line. When I first started using Strawberrynet a few years ago, my beautician told me it was all either fakes or out of date stock- but it is not and I’m saving a fortune. I admit I do some sampling and viewing of colours in physical shops, then head on-line to find the best bargains as well as products that are just not available in Australia.
I do have issues with not buying from Australian retailers and the impact that has on Australian jobs, but I often feel let down by the lack of service in Australian stores and no-one is offering me the service to justify higher charges. Mostly I’m left alone to play with the testers, but if someone gives me great service I do buy on the spot.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

It’s a catch 22 situation, Johanne. I totally get that. I’ve not used strawberrynet myself but others have been very happy with it.

Between Sephora and Duane Reade chemists( for just Revlon and bits and bobs) in New York and Macy’s for NYDJ and RL for the hubster…unreal. I just don’t get it, prices I mean. We are soooo ripped off. I’ve said this before but the service in Sephora and Macy’s, second to none, no judgy judgy your not slim or young or hip enough to shop here type staff. The staff esp in Sephora on 5th Ave were gorgeous, highly made up and beautifully outfitted girls and guys of every shape and size and colour, that impressed me and then I went wild buying…the prices are unbelievable, beats duty free!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

The service and staffing levels are amazing. Wages are apparently cheaper and I got the feeling that sales assistants earned commission as part of their salary.

  • http://twitter.com/suburp nikki

i shopped at sephora for years in France, i liked their own products ie makeup, the sets or the one colour buys. Never particularly thought them to be cheap on brand beauty products, really, there were cheaper parfumeries around. But if you have compared, it must be the case. No idea why beauty products should be more expensive in Oz. I mean, European cars.. ok. But most beauty products ship very easily (and many from Asia, even Euro brands..), I don’t see why it would be at such a different price ? weird.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

It is weird Nikki – I haven’t shopped at the European Sephoras – my step mum has and other readers – so can only vouch for the Australian-US comparison. It would be great to understand why there is such a big difference.

  • http://twitter.com/alexricia Alex

Sephora is so wonderful, and the prices never fail to surprise me. How can it possibly be HALF the cost to buy the same product in the US! My parents travel to Mississippi every 6 months and I always have a list of things for my Mum when they stopover in Hawaii. It’s worth the wait, I get double what I can here.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

So worth the wait and if you plan it right you’ll never run out!

  • Lisa Mckenzie

Thanks for sharing your haul from Sephora,Nikki, I Love the Nars palette ,you could do SO much with that,I have a huge Sephora palette full of eye shadows, blushes and lip glosses that I haven’t even used yet ,it’s in my ,as you say “makeup wardrobe”,love how you call it that.I have signed the petition because i do think we pay ridiculous prices for makeup and cosmetics in Australia compared to the US,Sometimes it’s still cheaper to buy online and pay for postage than to buy here and that is wrong!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Yes, that seems wrong that even with postage it’s cheaper. You need to attack that palette!

  • Cheryl Lynn Blum

There’s a Sephora at my local mall but I never shop there — it’s too expensive! I buy most of my beauty supplies at the drug store, which is much cheaper. I found that Garnier BB Cream at my drugstore chain’s website, how does this compare with the price in Australia? http://www.cvs.com/search/_/N-0?searchTerm=garnier+bb+cream&pt=global

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Hi Cheryl, that’s interesting that you say it’s too expensive. If you saw our prices … The Garnier BB Cream retails about $15 maximum full price here but is often on special between $9-12 so quite comparable. Thanks for the link!

  • Sarah Murphy

I loved sephora when I was in America and having just returned from Europe, I loved it there too! I had to restrain myself from going crazy. I dont get why beauty in Australia is so expensive… anytime someone I know is going overseas we always put an order in to keep us going. Why should Australia pay more than double than what the rest of the world pays?

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

I don’t understand it either Sarah. Wages seem to come into the argument but I’d love to know what the wholesale is on the product coming in in the first place. It just doesn’t stack up.

  • http://www.mdkaos.blogspot.com/ Mummaducka

Yes I shopped at that exact same Sophora, It was a magnificent experience! We went in after Disneyland closed which was after midnight when we went in the holiday season, and also did the disney store in the mall too, so as not to waste Disneyland time. But it’s best to go in at the end so you don’t have to trug your haul around all through Disneyland. My must buy would be the Clarisonic. I didn’t buy it while I was there as I was terrified of the voltage bit, but have since bought one from the USA after discovering they have multi voltage and you just put an Aussie adapter on the plug! After that I shopped up big on the OJON hair care range- the price differences are absolutely devastating! Then nail polish and all sorts of gear. What we pay here in this country is just so unfair. And I believe most of it is to do with the Government’s tax system. Of course you have to be rich and wellheeled to buy a face cream! Lots of families probably have to make a choice of new makeup for mum or dinner for ALL!!!! Beauty really could be only for the wealthy here! I do believe a lot of pensioners would probably not bother with trying to look made up or smooth skinned as it is so darn expensive. Even take for example the Garnier BB cream, did you get to see the price diff in the states? I’ll bet it was at least half of what we pay! Thank goodness we have you Nikki to lead us in the right direction of sourcing the best gear in all sorts of price points!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Thanks Mummaducka and no I forgot to check on the price of Garnier BB at a pharmacy – the only time I was in Duane Reade was for my son’s medication and was a bit stressed. x

Nice haul. Am off to look up the Nars cheek magic.
Have also signed the petition and passed it on to teen daughters.A Sephora anecdote; a friend of mine shopped there in NY with Paulina Porizkova (she’s a mutual friend of a friend) Yes, a super model took her through the store and gave her advice on what to buy. Needless to say she did as she was told!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Yes, I’d be hanging off every word! I remember Paulina – she was in a music clip for the band Cars, I think.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=621974740 Carolyn Wilson

That’s right, she is married to the lead singer. They got together after they made the film clip.

Are, my scratchy ’80s memory is still ok!
