Why I love the new L’Oreal Professionnel Steam Pod

If my hair could have signed autographs over the last week, it would have been very busy indeed.

This is not me big-noting my hair. Well, it is. But not in the sense of my hair’s self importance.

More in the sense that my hair (and me by association) has recently been on the receiving end of some potentially hair-changing salon attention.

Before I take you on my latest hair journey, let me back track a little with a little of my hair history. Specifically my bouffy hair history.

I have thick hair. Thick hair with a recalcitrant wave at the back.

Pre-straightening irons (which my young readers, I need to tell you was only 10 years ago), there was little I could do to counteract the bouffiness.

Enter the iron era and I was one very excited hair owner. Finally there was something to tame the mane.

Since that time, I’ve flaunted with chemical hair straightening, keratin straightening and the Brazilian blowout. Yep, if I so much as got a whiff of a new way to issue a “take that” to my frizzy mop, then I’d be there, caped up and first in line.

So when I walked into my wonderful salon last week for a pre-Sydney blow dry and there in front of me was the L’Oreal Professionnel Steam Pod … well, let’s just say, I may have come over all giddy.

L'Oreal Professionnel Steam Pod

I’d heard about the steam pod system from my hair stylist and via the Instagram feed at last month’s Hair Expo. I knew my hair and the pod could be friends but what I actually found was that friends really can be lovers.

In a nutshell, the steam pod offers both a treatment and style in one. It leaves your hair frizz and humidity proof until its next wash. Best of all, the way this is achieved is actually quicker than a blow dry and iron.

So how does it work?

Wouldn’t steam create frizz, not prevent it? I know. Sounds crazy, right?

1.  A pro-keratin cream or serum – or both – is added to your hair before being dried off to 80%

2. The irons (which are larger and heavier than regular irons) work like a clothing iron steam station system.

3. The temperature settings can be adjusted to suit the sensitivity of the hair and the desired style.

4. As the irons are worked through sections of hair, the anodised ceramic floating plates deliver a continuous flow of high-pressured steam, allowing the pro-keratin to penetrate the hair cuticle.

5. Hair can be styled with volume and bounce. Or super straight. Either way, hair remains frizz-free until the next wash.

I can vouch for all of the above because, as luck would have it, my hair experienced the steam pod twice in one week. Yes, the hair gods, they were indeed shining down on me.

When Mrs Woog booked me into her stylist for a blow dry and I walked in and saw the steam pod on the bench, it was a no brainer, I was sending my hair back for more. Not surprisingly Mrs Woog lined her hair up for the pod treatment too.

The next day at Blogopolis, my hair almost got more Tweets and Instagram uploads than the TomKat split ;) Kidding!

But really it should have … because quite frankly, I’ve become a little evangelistic about the Steam Pod want all bouffy hair owners to know about it. It may just change their hair life. See below for four days in the life of my Steam Podded hair. All I did each day was brush it. True.

How my Steam Pod hair lasted from Day 1 to Day 4

The Cost

Some salons are not charging extra; others $10-$20 on top of a normal blow dry. Why the extra charge? It’s a treatment, not just a style.

The really, really exciting news

The home version of this is NOW AVAILABLE. Details here.

I HAVE to wash my hair daily, or I end up looking like I’m homeless. I’d love to skip a day here and there, but I always end up regretting it. The home version would be best for me. I have very thin hair, but it’s damaged from home dye jobs. Has anyone tried this on thin hair????

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

My hair is thick so don’t have that answer for you. You’d also need to go easy on the product that’s used with it so your hair is not weighed down. The best way to find out is to book into a salon that uses them and see how your hair goes then!

I’m always dubious as to what people really consider big bouffy hair to really be. I have unruly big, frizzy and wiry hair, so like you my ears prick at the mere mention of “no more frizz”. My big find was surprisingly the rotating Instyler. Seriously has changed my hair from Effie 80’s to modern smooth and bouncy and there is no damage to the hair. And because my hair is so big and coarse I can make it last for a minimum of 7 days (with the help of dry shampoo on about day 5) . However, I’m willing to give this a go, especially if they bring out a home version. Looking at the photo’s your hair does look great.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

The home version has just been released. I haven’t had a chance to trial it yet but can’t wait. And agreed, everyone’s version of frizzy and unruly is different. My hair definitely does not look the photos above without intervention!

Love, Love, Love!!! Have been desperately seaching the net on where to buy! tell me more about the home version – when? how much?

You look absolutely stunning. Your hair looks not only smooth and straight but soooo silky and soft as well!! Lol i sound like a hair commercial. But seriously, thanks for this great tip, babe. I have the same hair as you (well if you were a brunette) but also thick with a wave, tends to look bouffy…am going to hound my hairdresser to get this at the salon, stat! :-)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Go Sharon … and yes, I sound like a commercial in this post but I get very excited when I come across something that is affordable and delivers results for my hair type. Let me know how you go!

      • Sharon Olney

No I appreciate you telling us about this, I truly do. Lord knows how much I’ve tortured my hair over the years to get it to behave. I look at you and I see hope :-) I mean, your hair never looked bad before anyway! Will let you know if it works for me too! Thanks again! xx

So gorgeous to meet you & thank you for letting me touch your hair too, you’re a doll, love Posie

Oh, thanks so much Posie – so glad you said hi – was so many online people there that I’d been hoping to meet for the first time.

  • Lisa Mckenzie

Wow yes it is something my locks would like,I have fine curly hair which I straighten usually, and when it rains my hair behaves badly indeed then I get the fly aways and it goes curly ,if you see the woman in a hood of some sort on rainy days that’s me,I don’t mind having curls on the ends aka the hairdresser did it ,but I hate it dried naturally though I will leave it if I am feeling lazy or sick ,so would love some of that steampod and will be first in line when a home version comes out .Nikki your hair looked beautiful even on day 4.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Lisa, it was incredibly rainy up here when I first had it done – and it still stayed the same. A normal blow dry on me would have been wasted last Tuesday. Will let you know when I know a release date for the home device.

  • http://twitter.com/ACurvyWoman PrincessEatsPeaSoup

I am fascinated, your hair looks great. I never attempted to change my hair as my mothers advice growing up was to really work as much as you can with what you already have because it will be less expensive and much easier. I have a pretty strong spiral curl and my few attempts, in the salon, to go for a sleeker look have lasted mere hours. I still like to know about these things though and might even be tempted to go and see what happens. I don’t have high hopes that it would work for long with my fierce curl.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

You’re mum was on to something I think – with my hair, it’s partially straight, partially ugly, unruly wave – hence my constant campaign to deal with the unruly. Would be interesting to see how it would go on your hair. Let me know if you ever have it done.

      • http://twitter.com/ACurvyWoman PrincessEatsPeaSoup

The only time my hair was in was in the 80’s when every one else had spiral perms and I had very big, slightly curly hair that looked like a half grown-out perm…hence it’s been short ever since that went out and I couldn’t deal with the styling needed to make it look sleek.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Ahhh, Johanne … and I bet you had the last laugh at people like me who attempted the spiral perm!!

  • Mummaducka

I love the look of this! I used to have ‘back in the day’ (about the farah fawcett flick time) one of those curling wands that you filled with water and pushed on the end and the steam shot through the holes. Sometimes though, burning hot water would run out the end if the seal had started to perish- they were fantastic! This is such an inprovement on that old technology! Does anyone else remember them? I bought them over and over until they were no longer on the market.

    • Mummaducka

P.s I love the band of colour on your ends. What is that?

      • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

That’s actually just some crazy thing that happened with the Instagram filter on that photo! Looks like I’ve had my hair colour dipped!

        • Mummaducka

hahaha, too funny, unintentional colour dipping!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki | Styling You

Oh, I don’t remember them but yes, this sounds like an improvement on the technology!
