Let your legs make a winter fashion statement

Sponsored post

I blame a lot of my fashion choices on Mad Men.

There is something so exquisitely nostalgic about looking back on an era where going to an office for work was something you got dressed up for.

Of course, in this nostalgia, I gloss over in my mind the corsetry that gave shape to so many of the outfits – and the women wearing them.

I’m a comfort queen from way back so I’m not looking to return all the way there.

What I do like is embracing slices of the style from this era.

The easiest style slice to pull off (or should I say pull up)? Hosiery.

Nothing works so quickly to take even the most basic frock from so-so to so-so fabulous than a pair of statement tights.

When I worked in an office every day, my winter staple was black jersey wrap dresses worked back with coloured and patterned tights and black patent heels.

So simple.

Now that my office is my lounge room, those hosiery and heels days still happen but more for winter nights out or corporate meetings.

The look is very much part of my multiple personality wardrobe – and it’s a personalty that’s here to stay.

Just quietly, Mr Styling You would be very happy if I actually embraced this personality for every day. Swapping ballet flats and leggings for sexy tights and heels always seems to go down well ;)

I have learned a few things over the years when it comes to wearing hosiery.

Try these 4 tips on for size:

  1. DO stock up at the start of the hosiery-wearing season. Like having the correct undies to pull out to wear with different outfits, having a number of pairs of tights on hand to work back with your winter frock options, will leave you with plenty of options in the madness that is the morning rush.
  2. DO go a little bit outside your style comfort zone when building your tights wardrobe. Yes, black and nude tights do have their place but if your winter wardrobe is mainly black then why not create a statement with coloured or patterned tights?
  3. DO check the sizing chart before buying. Tights that are too small or too big for you will not be comfortable. No-one’s a fan of the fallen down tight crotch. Are they?
  4. DO pay a little more for your statement tights. I’ve learned from experience (hello laddered tights when I’m a long way from home to change!) that paying for quality will actually be better for your budget in the long time. The tights are less likely to get holes in them as you pull them up plus you are more likely to get more than one or two uses out of them before having to throw them away. I’ve got quality tights in my drawer that are two or three winters’ old. True.

Which is why I was stoked to discover online hosiery store: FireHosiery.

And by discovered, I mean discovered a new obsession.

The average price you will pay for a pair of tights is around $25, and these are of the quality I mentioned in my fourth tip above, so in my books definitely worth it..

FireHosiery tights are made using state-of-the-art Italian knitting machines, using yarn sourced from Israel and America

I also fell head over legs for the statement value of these tights. Never underestimate the power of a patterned tight. Never. They can work for all occasions – from casual to corporate and evening.

And comfort? Wowzers. SO comfortable. They kind of stretch and mould over your legs to make you feel like you have pins worth showing off (yes, I can be delusional ;) )

All of this was enough to make me unleash my corporate wardrobe personality.

FireHosiery Deco Flora tights in Dark Plum $31.95

We’re big fans here on Styling You about easy online shopping and FireHosiery ticks all the the boxes I like:  free, fast courier delivery in Australia; same-day delivery service for metro Sydney orders placed before 10am; worldwide shipping $6.95. And the whole checkout process is really user-friendly. Yes, lots of ticks there.

In each of the outfits on this post, I’ve let my FireHosiery tights do the talking. My shoes are traditional black pumps and I’ve kept my top and skirt black. The only addition to this is the blazer, with each working to lighten up a winter office or corporate ensemble.

What do you look for in a pair of tights? Do you like a statement leg? What’s your favourite way to wear statement tights?

I’d love coloured pairs but for the life of me cannot find them anywhere in my
    size.

    • http://kimbalikes.com Kim-Marie Williams

I’m not sure but if you are after plus size tights, I found a selection of coloured, plain and patterned opaques at Myer for plus sizes. I think by Voodoo and Ambra. Sussan also have an amazing array of colours and they are very generous sizing. I usually buy Tall/Large in tights, but bought Small/Medium in this range and they’re still generous on. Maybe try a pair of those ones? Luck! :)

      • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Thanks Kim-Marie, you are an excellent spotter!

  • http://cottoncandydiva.wordpress.com/ Evelyn

Great post! I must admit that the only ‘patterned’ hosiery I on is a spotted Leona Edmiston (that I bought on sale from Myer)…maybe I should get more patterned tights!

I do love coloured tights though, I have quite a few pairs (just bought 2 more from cotton on), I’ll be doing a post on styling coloured tights on my blog soon :)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Love a coloured tight and I do love Leona’s range too …more than a few pairs in my drawer!

  • http://themummyautobiography.com/ Miss Pink

    OMG Nikki. LOVE!
I am currently having a love affair with tights. Especially coloured one’s. I just wish I had more to wear with them. Winter appropriate and so I will still be warm. Maybe I just need more tights to inspire me?
    Lol.

  • Annie

Thanks Nikki, bought another pair as well as my freebie- yay. Wasn’t sure about patterned tights but if you say they’re cool then they’re cool. :)   You have got me hooked on Mad men – just bought the first season after watching the two latest ones.   “Zoo-bee-do -be -doo.  Love the block colour dress she wore to work the next day. x

First of all – HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUUUUUU!! I hope you are having the most fabulous day and are being spoilt rotten.
And can I just say…I can see why your husband wants you to play Sexy Secretary more often, Nikki – HOOHAA!!
    Much love gorgeous lady. xx

  • Jo

I love Firehosiery tights! I have a bit of a hosiery addiction, though. At last count, I had over 30 pairs of stockings. Argh! Added to my large collection of scarves, they all fit into an overnight bag.

  • http://twitter.com/LUXE_by_Lulu Nicole

Happy Birthday! I’m A-mazed you ever get to wear them in Qld lol but down here in chilly Melb we wear them 9 months out of 12 so good quality is essential! I do like patterned tights but I actually don’t think I’ve ever worn coloured tights as an adult, not sure why but maybe I should live dangerously and give them a go :) x

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

DO it! And BTW it was 8 degrees this morning! It does get cold here.

      • http://twitter.com/LUXE_by_Lulu Nicole

Well that IS quite nippy! … It was 7 degrees as a maximum where I am yesterday lol

  • Elizabeth Moore

Happy Birthday Nikki, thanks for the gift for us :)   Looking forward to receiving my new tights

      Enjoy Elizabeth!

  • Jocelyn

Happy Birthday Nikki and thankyou for thinking of us like you have I just bought a pair of the tights from  Fire Hosiery and am really looking forward to a few days of wear with them.  We do not get too many days here that one wears tights but the weather is a bit on the icy side at the moment.  Love that photo of you in that Leona Edmiston red dress very sassy.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Thanks Jocelyn … it’s icy here at the moment too!

Thanks Nikki, love a freebie and also LOVE the Deco Flora tights!

  • Gillian

Oh Happy Birthday Nikki. What a great way to share the love. I’ve been to the site to redeem my pair, and am very excited :-) . Must admit it was a bit tricky to do on my phone as I couldn’t see the whole page at once but I did it! When my sick puter returns tomorrow I’ll have a good look at their site as I did like the look of the site. Hope you have fab celebrations for your birthday month. X

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Glad you were able to work it Gillian!

  • Mrs Woog

I LOVE good tights and agree that you get what you pay for. My cheapie ones never last the day, but my luxe ones are years old as well. Can pull this suckers on with complete confidence.

By the way, what do we think of ye olde fish nets Nikki?  x

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Mrs Woog, the only danger when I put fish nets on is that Mr Styling You gets a little bit too excited if you get my drift. I save them for special occasions and avoid putting anything in the dishwasher when wearing them ;)

  • Karen

Thank you Nikki! Love a freebie and I am really loving patterned tights this winter. I bought a few cheapies from Target on the weekend but I am thinking that they may not last too long so it will be lovely to have a good quality pair as well.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

      You won’t be disappointed Karen!

  • Mary

Morning Nikki,  Happy Birthday to you and thank you so much for sharing!  As a ‘tights lover’ from way back….I couldn’t be more happier and can’t wait to receive them.  Totally agree that you get what you pay for with pantyhose and tights…and I too have a couple of pairs in my drawer that have seen more than one winter.  Thanks again for sharing and bringing some fun into this bleak winter weather.  Have an amazing birthday month xo

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Thanks Mary – and winter need not be boring! Will help us get through to September!

    Happy Birthday!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

I’ve got the green Envy pair and love – will easily work with black or a light tan neutral.

  • Lisa Mckenzie

Happy Birthday Nikki ,love your pressie from Zoe Kratzman, Tis beautiful,And I hope you get lots of presents and have a really nice day :}Hope your getting spoilt rotten.
Totally agree on buying good quality tights or hosiery ,I don’t do corporate looks very often and hate pantyhose with I think It’s because I had to wear them for years when I worked at Myer ( then called Grace Bros).
But I have 2 pairs of expensive nice cute tights I wear with my tunics and my seed dress . They are opaques and one is grey and cabled and one is tan and black patterned and I have had them for a few years now so well worth the price I  paid and they keep your legs warm and add interest to an outfit a bit like a scarf for your legs!
    Have a fantastic day x

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Oh Lisa … you sound like you’ve got it sorted! I’ve posted my pressie photos on Instagram!

  • Rachelmp

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Johanne-Taylor/100000780773879 Johanne Taylor

Thanks for the lovely gift, Nikki.

I’m a tights lover and work in a corporate office. I have gone from wearing only pants to dresses and skirts almost every day in winter over the last few years, as I think they just look a bit more polished amongst all the grey suits.

I had looked at this site a few times after an earlier post about the on-line shopping here, but this has encouraged me to take the plunge and order a few pairs. As I’m in Sydney, I should have them later today and I can start thinking about what I might wear them with tomorrow…

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Oh, that’s exciting that you can get the quick delivery! Enjoy!

  • jicyjac

woo hoo  – Happy Birthday have a wonderful day.  Thanks for the tights, I am living in tights, dresses and skirts this winter, I might layer them over my red opaques since I’m in Melb and it is very very chilly here this year.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Oh, great idea re the layering – for warmth and a striking look!

  • Robyn

Woohoo!!! Love a pair of patterned tights.  Thanks for the lovely surprise this morning Nikki.  My cold fingers were typing double time to get onto this one!  Enjoy your birthday/month and I hope there’s lots of lovely treats coming your way.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

My fingers haven’t warmed up yet either! Need to wrap them around another cup of something!

  • AshMmisforMe

Oh wow! Thank-you so much for the gorgeous gift! Not sure I can pull them off in heels like you, running after my two, but they are just beautiful and I can’t wait to wear them!!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

I’ll wear mine with flat boots too!

  • Amanda
