Keeping it Real: White Shirt Day 2012

So, I woke up today all set and ready to pop on my white shirt for White Shirt Day 2012 but in the scramble that can be my mind sometimes, I realised about two hours later that the 19th of May is not today. As you all know, it’s tomorrow.

And that’s when you SHOULD all be wearing your white shirts. Please.

Do it for all the beautiful women who are currently fighting Ovarian Cancer. Do it for the ones who lost their fight. Do it for the daughters of these amazingly brave and courageous women.

Long-term readers of Styling You will know that this is a cause very close to our family’s heart.

Ovarian Cancer is an insidious disease because mostly women don’t know that they even have it till it’s progressed too far. That’s why awareness and fundraising is so important. That’s why I publicly back the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, whose fundraising efforts continue to work towards developing an early detection test for this cancer.

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are generally vague and may not be obvious, but the following may occur:

  • Vague abdominal pain or pressure
  • Feeling of abdominal fullness, gas, nausea, indigestion different to your normal sensations
  • Sudden abdominal swelling, weight gain or bloating
  • Persistent changes in bowel or bladder patterns
  • Low backache or cramps
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Unexplained weight loss
Yes, I know. We’ve all had those, haven’t we? Well, except for the unexplained weight loss in my case ;)

Back to today … as I was already dressed in my white shirt (even got out the iron to iron it … which I never do because Mr Styling You is way more proficient at that skill), I thought I’d do a Keeping it Real post for you that will hopefully inspire you to don your whites tomorrow.

Huge snaps to Witchery for continuing to support this cause.

I’m a huge fan of fashion brands and labels using their clout for good so I may have also snuck in another great cause: sass & bide’s Wish Upon a Star campaign: you can buy very cute star necklaces with all proceeds going to Make-A-Wish Australia.

Happy Friday Stylers … if you do wear a white shirt tomorrow, I’d love you to post an image of it here with a comment (did you know you can do that?), or email it to me (nikki@stylingyou.com.au) or post on my Facebook wall, Twitter or Instagram. I’d love to get a gallery together like we did here.

Love the scarf!  I have been wearing my condom dress whenever it is clean – I didn’t think I would wear it as much as I do – but I LOVE IT! Love the beige, mine is black…

    Great post… as always… ;0)

Love the outfit. I really admire how well you layer – it is something for me to work on.  I am not a white shirt lover – primarily because I can’t find one I like but for a cause like this it is worth the effort.  Women (and their friends & family) dealing with this disease I am sure would love their only problem to be trying to find a white shirt they like.  Thank you Nikki.

Very wise words Kelly … and I’m working on a “how to layer” post. Once you’ve got the bits in your wardrobe that you need, it becomes second nature.

Thanks Carli – happy birthday to you! Hope you get duly spoilt!!!

I love white, but i have a basic fashion rule being a size 10 with E/F cup boobs. never wear white on top..it make my chest look huuuge! What do you think?

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

I honestly don’t think the colour makes a difference (mine are E cup by the way!) – it’s the shape of the top – you obviously need a v-neck and then if you layer a jacket or cardi over the top it should work.

Looking fabulous Nikki, I love your scarf! I’ll need to style up some sort of soccer mum white shirt ensemble for tomorrow. Thanks for the reminder, I just made a donation to the white shirt campaign, buying a new shirt is a little out of my current budget :-) Hopefully it’s nice weather tomorrow.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Yes, soccer for me too! Thanks for donating!
